legacy regression: Maverick is not affected by Event cards for remainder of game. (GI)

i assume that even if maverick is the last character on the team, you still can't venture or concede, since that is something done by the player, and not the character.

my question is, since new universe/fortress has to be played through a character, can maverick still play this to concede the battle?

Question: Maverick's on my Front Line. I have GI (not affected by Events) in play on him and New Universe placed on him. The Lambs To The Slaughter (no Venture, no conceding) Event comes up. Maverick can play New Universe during this battle, can't he?
