I'm not sure you can't use it defensively with a universe card, but offensively is off limits. Unless, of course, the BG is already in play, in which case the bonus does apply.

I believe the same rule applies to doubleshots. You can't play it with the DS offensively, but if already in play it's all good. But you CAN play it defensively with the DS.

You CAN use the BG offensively with another special, but if you use the BG offensively and the attack is defended, you lose everything including the effect of the BG.

And yes, I am pretty sure it's legal to play it defensively with an numerical special.
