bbh and i were playing a game, and he had the card that allows a character to play shadow king specials on another.  i forget who it was, but i was attacking this second character, and was worried about the 'avoid special/draw' card. 

we played it so the character (neron i think) couldn't play the shadow king special for defense.  i was wondering what the people here thought

Meta #162 spells it out:

If a card "is not affected" by a specific type of card, then cards of that type may be used during the defensive action, but any cards already in play before the attack was made are considered not in play until the defensive action is resolved.

So, consider the MF to not be in play.
