Something BBH and I came up with a while ago:  Shared Events.

Before the game, you and your opponent agree upon a single mission set.  The best way to do this is randomly.

Take all events for that set, plus one copy of each of the "Any mission", and shuffle them into a face-down pile.

Each of you adds 3 "Event Markers" into your deck. Start your game.

When an Event Marker is drawn, it is played exactly as an Event would be played-- before the battle, one one per player per battle, draw to replace a played event, Defeated Heroes pile.

When an Event Market is played, flip over the top card of the Event Pile. That event is now in play.  If both you an your opponent draw event markers, it's exactly the same. First player plays, draws, flips.  Second player plays, draws, flips.

It adds a bit of spice to the game: you never know which mission you'll face. It gets some events into play that would otherwise never see the light of day.  And since its random, no one has a pre-determined tactical advantage over anyone else.

We used to play Magic the Gathering like this with a deck of random enchantments and artifacts.  This is a great idea to have some random fun!  Great idea!
