How do BK cards work?

Can someone explain to me how BK Special cards work?  The text is as follows...

<Character> plays numerical attacks face down for remainder of battle.  Opponent must guess to defense.

So say I have Daredevil's Blind Man's Bluff in play.  Daredevil attacks with a 5 Fighting Power card face-down against an opponent's character.  The opponent reveals a 4 Energy from their hand.  The defense fails, but what happens next?

Does the 4 Energy Power card return to their hand, or do they need to discard it?
In either case, do they get another chance to guess?

I've always played it as if a "regular" defense, hence discard it afterwards whether it succeeded or failed. And having another chance to guess kinds of defeats the purpose (considering that on the 2nd try the attack was revealed).

Yeah, official ruling is if defense fails, attack hits and defending Power cards is discarded.
