The phrase "during battle" refers to the time after the Venture Phase has been completed and before the time when the Venture winner is determined.

So, I'm a bit confused.  Are there any special cards that don't state "play during battle" that can be played BEFORE the Venture Phase or AFTER a Venture winner is determined?  I get that the BL specials can be played to stop your opponent from conceding and BE specials allow for an attack after a concession, but both of these instances still take place BEFORE the venture winner is determined.  Am I missing something here, or is this rule just taking up space?

I see.  It's not a definition of when to play the special card itself, it's a definition of when the special cards checks for a trigger.  Thanks Jack.
