9. FIGHT IT OUT!
Fantastic! Great to see someone taking the initiative and providing this nice tutorial. :)
it is pretty nice
Very much appreciated! :o
Don't forgot 10. Hope it doesn't crash! ;D
And how about 11. How to resume a game after it crashes. ;)

Not quite sure what you are saying here. Are you asking if you should consider posting things that increase the likelihood of the game crashing? If so, that is a good idea.
exactly.
for one, i know that removing hits from the permanent record that aren't hits may cause a crash. playing artifacts somehow too.
I know I always seem to cause crashes when I intend to defend an attack by shifting. :-[ I forget what's the best way to go about that.
tell your opponent you wanna shift
let the hit hit
then move the hit(if it hit) to the shiftee and discard the shift special
do you guys see the screen shots used? how you can't see the reserve hero and the defeated mission pile... THAT is what my screen looks like. OPonline does not have a scroll function so the program is unplayable for me. (you can't play OP without access to the reserve hero and the defeated missions, unless you are VERY VERY good/lucky)

Do you need to take the hit? Can you simply block and then discard the shift special after you announce to your opponent your intention to shift?

ok, this is because i am using a TV as a monitor at 1216x684 instead of 1280x720p. I can still click the reserve hero and the defeated mission pile.

So do you think having CoS adjust his monitor settings will give him the full play screen?
i see it all just fine
yes nate
i have no idea. my screen scaling is off because my tv is stupid.

I don't run the boards.
that really sucks that you aren't a mod or something.
Hi Everyone, i'm new to the boards and was really surprised that Overpower is still alive. I was looking up the rules since i got my wife hooked on cards games and stumbles upon the Overpower.ca website and found it curious that it had current dates in it so I investigated some more. I remember when oponline was before, I use to frequent an Overpower IRC chat room where i met JCTango and helped beta test the program :D it's been more than 10 years since then. Anyways, i'm having issues installing the program on Windows 7. I've installed it, but keep getting error like this and OPDECK just freezes. Does anyone have any idea on how to fix it?

Speaking of JCTango, I spoke with him a few years ago while doing a quick search on Google for other mentions of the site.

Not much came out of it though.

maybe you didn't have the new version?

the main thing i didn't do was run the programs as the adminstrator. I had already tried to install the correct DLLs.
Are there any programmers out there who've tried to take a look at the coding of the program to try to alleviate the bugs which cause the program to crash? I knew a few programmers myself, but none that play OP (though I am working on changing that.) Would this be something worth looking into, for the sake of making the online program less frustrating?
You can't look at the code for a compiled program. It would be like trying to remove some flour from a cookie after it's been baked and cooled down.
There are other problems with the program itself and I concluded, at least to myself, that it's better off rewriting it from scratch than to update what's given to me. The only problem is time and resources. I have none.
I have a friend who's a programmer that is currently unemployed. He HAS a lot of time on his hands, and is currently working on a project of his own, that my brother and I are assisting him with, but if I could teach him Overpower, he might be a good candidate to write a new on-line program, provided he's interested in something that would earn him zero income.
hi Guys, this is probably a dumb question, but how to do play behind a router? Both times i've played i've had to connect my computer directly into the modem...is it a router setting I have to figure out?
It really depends on what kind of router you have:
http://portforward.com/
will be a big help, find your model (or something similar) and open the port you need. Generally, it doesn't have to be the default port of 1544, you should use something higher (> 10000 is recommended). It lowers the chance that other applications would use be using it. You may also have to allow OpOnline on the Windows Firewall.
To test if your port is open, use: http://www.canyouseeme.org/ . If it says Success, then you did it right.
You are the host, your opponent is the guest. Only the host needs to open the port for the firewall(s), the guest may only need to allow OpOnline through the Windows Firewall.
Thanks jack
So anyone out there still playing OPonline? I've been so busy lately but hoping to show up tonight and tomorrow at least.
@Demascus - Someone can edit the original programmers code via Visual Basic 6. I took a good look around their program and even got permission to edit it. It's very hard to follow in my opinion, but I am just a student programmer. Because I couldn't figure out what to edit (I really just wanted to make the program and cards resizeable), I've been working on an all new version for about 6 months or so, during school breaks or when I catch some extra free time. I started from complete scratch and the game has been tested online. It just needs some bug fixes, a programmed installation package, and for me to conceptualize and program the deck building software. I'm also thinking of a better way to connect people so they dont have to learn how to open ports manually and other hinderances to using OPO. If you know someone who is a good coder, and that wants to take a stab at modifying the old code or building an all new version, I say go for it. I'm aiming to get back at it after this semester ends in May. If I dont take any classes during the summer, my version should be done by the end of summer. Best case, end of June. Just really a time issue for me.
Maybe I should get you in touch with him... I know nothing about programming, but I sent him the link to where he can download the OPO. He said that (and there is a VERY good chance that I'm misquoting here) the security within the program was not where it should be. He's working on another project atm, but he's also looking into redesigning the OPO program, or writing a new one. You two might be able to assist each other if you are in contact directly. I aslo brought up the idea of designing an iPhone or Droid deckbuilder app. I know one of my friends has designed apps for iPhone, so he might be able to do something in that arena.
That is a really cool idea.. the smartphone deckbuilder. If he was interested in helping in the near future, I would probably just have him build the deck building software. Its pretty much a separate entity from the game itself and I havent even started on it. Probably wouldnt be a whole lot of work either. I use Visual Studio 2012, but it wouldnt matter what he coded with as long as his output was a text file that could be read by my program. Once that is done and I fix the connecting issues, the game can pretty much be released in beta. If he wants to know more or is interested in trying to make the deck building software, have him contact me. My email is clanier9@att.net
I will be in touch with him and let you know.
perhaps the deck builder app (android & iOS) can just have the card text and not the card pictures, so it would not be distributing copyrighted cards or such without the consent of disney, marvel, WB etc.
I dont think any of that is a problem. The card images can be found on jacks website, in the current card game, and all over the place. The images are owned, yes, but as long as we are not selling them, things should be a-okay. Even if it weren't, the distribution would be so small that a large company would be spending more money on bringing a suit than they would be getting. I mean, how many people would seriously use the potential deck building smart phone app? maybe 10? 15?
If not for copy right, think about the size the app would need to be to hold the data for over 2600 pictures.
yea, you're right, it woulld be kind of big.... not huge, but big. the alternative is make it pull images from a website, but that would make the app require a web connection. Anywho, I'm not too concerned with a smartphone app at the moment. an interesting idea for sure though.
So I'm trying to get OPOnline to run on my laptop, but it doesn't seem to want to. I'm trying to run the Deckbuilder program in compatibility XP(service pack 2) but it will get to the Overpower Online Deck Editor screen, with Mr. Fantastic and "Loading...Please Wait..." at the bottom, but does nothing more then that. Suggestions?
EDIT: Nevermind... I got it.
This is still not really working out for me if someone could maybe set up a match and have me join or vice versa to figure out the problem that would be awesome
What os are you on?
sorry not sure what os means :D
operating system
Windows xp, osx?
oh, hehe I'm using Windows 7 ultimate why?
someone else needs to help ya out. im on xp still. lol
Has anyone every tried played over Skype?
please tell me there are people willing to Skype play!?!?!
I'd be glad to!
my Skype ID: gustafolson
free free to add me and tell me you'd like to play a few games of Overpower. Real Cards. Real Players. Face to face video match!
Bring it :)
i dont have skype
does not have a device with a camera & mic
sorry
Free download: http://www.skype.com/en/download-skype/
Just need a device with a camera & mic and you are set :)
i'd be willing to play, I just have to get a camera from my dad who i bought it for but doesn't use it and set up skype.
Ok, tell me when you have the A/V set up and we can venture a few rounds
no promises, but i'm hoping to have everything set up to play tonight...lol...
Add Alaska.Overpower as well. I'll need to use my IPhone to show you the cards while I view the laptop to view your playmat. Going to have to have 4 screens to optimize play
signed up and good to play although i only have one camera..lol.
I added both your Skype accounts but you haven't accepted my friend request..
Interesting about Skype play. Please do share how that experience went. :)
Haven't been able to get a game going yet. I think COS is a busy man
COS and I have been able to play a couple games now and I know he's been playing someone else over Skype. Our first game was a little shakey because it was our first game but after that card placement and everything went smoothly. I would recommend other people try out Skype for playing overpower. Just make sure you write down the hits on your characters and place your hits directly in front on your opponents characters. If anyone wants to add me I'm Patricio Baez on Skype.
So 2 Skype accounts and 2 devices. I don't have room in my room with pc to play... :(
I've mentioned this before, but LackeyCCG.com is a digital table top that can access tons of CCG's, and now there is an Overpower plugin for the Lackey program. The MAJOR thing I've noticed about using Lackey, vs OPO, is that OPO has a much more user friendly deckbuilder program, and Lackey seems to be lacking the option to build battlesites. Other then that, it might be worth checking out, as it's not scripted to enforce the rules of the game, as OPO does, but is more like actually sitting down with an opponent, and both players are responsible for keeping track of the game state, thus it's less likely to crash mid-game due to the programming not allowing certain cards to be played certain ways. Just an option.

Oh man add some links. There should be an ipad app for this!
I think I like the feeling of Skype because you get to hold real cards.
Thanks for the info on LackeyCCG. I will certainly check it out.
i agree with Chuu. when i skype i can hold real cards. talk with a real player. and watch him shuffle and lay out his heroes and placed cards exactly as if I was sitting across from him. they only draw back is i have to keep track of my hits on a scratch pad....
more people should Skype :)
add my Skype: Alaska Overpower
Let's Venture!
If I wanted to load this to a laptop that didn't currently have internet access, for deck building purposes, could I first download it to a jump drive from one computer and follow those instructions the same way to load it on another?
Also what's wrong with the search functions on the overpower.ca site?
Yes. You could save it onto a jump drive and install it on the laptop.
Which search functions?

Which search functions?
Only the meta rule lookup works for me. The chracter, special, battlesite, and event lookups don't.
Try a hard refresh, Ctrl+F5 works on most browsers. Otherwise, clearing cache would also work too.
im not having any problems
so its not the site
