Select matches will be recorded and posted on YouTube. If you do not wish to be recorded, please contact Jack (jack@overpower.ca) prior to the tournaments.
Rules are standard OverPower Legion Rules with slight modifications:
- Four (4) Characters with the Sum Deck Rule
- Can/Am Max 6 Tourney will also restrict stats on all Characters to be 6 or less. Characters with stats 6 or less that have access to higher level Power cards will be allowed.
- At least 51 cards in the deck, (if using Event Cards, minimum of 56 cards including the Event Cards)
- Complete set of 7 Mission Cards numbered 1 to 7 matching the events, if any
- One location designated as the Homebase (Optional)
- Either:
- Battlesite deck with a location designated as the Battlesite and matching Activators (plus a maximum of one Beyonder) in the deck but no Any Hero/Characters in the deck
- No Battlesite deck but allowed to have Any Hero/Character specials in the deck
- All Marvels are allowed, including printed cards and proxies printed in color/colour and legible. This includes the 6 Any-Power Teamwork. Printed Marvels proxies are available by contacting Larry prior to the tournament.
- Pictures of OverPower Toronto's Marvels and generic info: http://overpower.ca/mv.php
- Slightly more detailed info about the Marvels: http://overpower.ca/archive/Ripayuheadoff/op/marvels.html
- Absolutely no other proxy cards are allowed.
Cards must also be protected in deck protectors of uniform color/colour and texture.
Time limits are enforced.
Tie-breakers if the winner is not determined within the time limit in the following order:
- +1 for each Mission in the Completed Missions pile, +0 for each Mission in the Reserve Missions pile, -1 for each Mission in the Defeated Missions pile. If that is still tied:
- Player with more characters remaining, after resolving Inherent abilities and specials (LG for example). If that is still tied:
- Player with the greater sum of Current and Permanent records on their opponent's characters and locations. If that is still tied:
- A battle is played, winner takes all. IF THAT IS STILL TIED:
- A battle is played with only 2 cards per person, winner takes all. IF THAT IS STILL TIED, then repeat #5.
Rulings and Clarifications:If you have any questions about the rules pre-tournament, feel free to ask and we'll post the rulings here. If you are unsure of how a card is played, this is your opportunity to find out before a tournament match. We'll update periodically as questions or issues come up.
Q: Is Devourer of Worlds a discard if my opponent has no battlesite?A: Yes. This is based on Meta Rule 112: If the target of a Special does not exist on the players team and there is no way in which the target can be brought into existence by a player, then the Special must be discarded as unusable.Q: Can I place the A-Next any homebase aspect to my homebase?A: No. The any homebase aspect follows the same placing guidelines as Any Heroes, so it may not be placed unless a condition alters the rule, as with the Team Overpower Homebase which specifically allows for the placement of aspects. You are, however, allowed to place a location specific aspect to the corresponding homebase.Q: In a match, my opponent used a special to avoid 1 attack with a fighting icon against my attack from a Battlesite, even though the attack didn't have a fighting icon... is this legal?A: Yes, in this case it's a valid defense. The battlesite special is considered to share the icons of the activator that was used to retrieve it. Think of it as having the activator 'shadow' the special even though it's not present physically. The icons of that activator are there too.Q: Phoenix inherent "When K.O.'d, Phoenix may continue to fight and is not discarded until end of battle." - When KO'd she fights on... Can my opponent still attack her? Can I remove hits from her (or any character for that matter) once she/they are KO'd? I refer to hits to cb or hits to pr.. Could I use a remove a hit from a teammate perm record when that teammate was just ko'd the turn before?A: Yes, she continues to fight and can still be attacked. Yes you may remove hits, however they will not reverse the KO. Yes you may shift the hits into Permanent record.
NOTE: You may NOT, however, use Onslaught: Merciless conqueror on her if she has already been KO'd. That special may not be used on an already KO'd character, regardless if they are still active on the front line.Q: AH - no special cards may be played against prof x for remainder of battle. Defensive? A: Yes. It may also be played on your turn as an action.Q: Devourer of Worlds - "...this card may not be negated." - If the event that states "No cards w/ the word Negate may be played this battle." is in play, Is DoW affected because the word Negate is in the word Negated?A: Yes. That event affects DoW.Quick refresher on Renege: http://overpower.ca/wiki/Renege

Wow! Exciting stuff! :D
Yeah, I can't wait! Gonna be fun!

No proxies is going to be a pain in the ass.
I only have 2 sets of premium cards, but I have to field 3 decks from 1 card pool. :/
Dice K. will be there!
It looks good Jack. I will be there as well.
My only suggestion would be to determine if you play top 16 or top 8 based on attendance. You can even do top 12 etc, with the lower records playing to make the top 8. Basically you make sure anybody with a 2-2 record or better makes it in. Otherwise playing to make top 16 when there are only 18 people in the tournament is kinda silly.
Phil
We have booked a hotel in the city.
That is a good suggestion Phil. That is something that I will ask Larry.
My boss says I'm cleared. I'm in. So where I can I study a list of popular decks that I will likely have to face? :)
Watch our YouTube channel for an idea of what is currently played. Though it's not a good representation since it mostly covers the Canadian players.
And Larry will be transparent with the ranking and such so I'll post it when I find out more.
nicely put together there jack
wife has a close friend who just had a baby in buffalo, so I'm likely in..will know more in a few weeks...CANT. WAIT!

My thoughts exactly NCann.
I actually have a friend trying to get a job in Buffalo. If that turns out well then maybe some time in the future.
I mentioned on the FB event page, but will also mention here:
I'm going to book a hotel suite. It says "up to 6 adults" (I think 3 beds, a couple pull out couches), but I'm sure I can sneak in a couple sleeping bags if no one asks. It'd be aboot $30 per person, give or take a few dollars given how many people there are. It's cheaper if I can book in advance, so the sooner I get some confirmed, the quicker I can book it.

I'm guessing it should be a given that there's a washroom on site.

I'm guessing that too. I was just wondering where the previous "no bathroom" comment came from. Having no shower doesn't bug me, since we'll have a hotel room.
I have to say that it will be great to finally play competitive Overpower for the first time since 1998.
Bring on the Canadians!
I can't wait to meet em... I might even move to Toronto.:)

just reading this page made me think of Thunderdome!! HAHA
Having a tournament in a homeless shelter is hardcore dedication, looking forward to your usual high quality coverage Jack.
I'm gonna predict Hot Rod as the winner, no pressure or anything...
We'll probably do a predictions thread in a few weeks, BBH usually takes care of that.
How many, including you Onslaught, would be interested in a live stream? I'm positive we can get one set up with YouTube Live for the event but I'll need a new webcam + tripod. I'm willing to make the investment if 5+ people are serious about watching.
As for my high quality coverage, we'll have at least 2 videos per round recorded. If we do get the streaming working, then a third video can be recorded straight to YouTube and automatically available on their servers (and no editing).
Haha, it's going to be quite the race to see who can pick me first!
It's one thing to watch me play, but it's another to sit on the other side of the table.
I'd watch a live stream for sure, even if I missed the beginning I'm bound to be able to view some of it that day. You should rope in an eliminated player to do running commentary on the elimination rounds, eSPORTS!

I just read this post. This is serious. This is a real post i think you people should take into effect.
You people do NOT need to stay at a homeless shelter. That is so wrong for so many reasons. Have you ever seen the movie 'pursuit of happiness' with will smith? He lines up 3 hours early to make sure he gets a spot in the shelter, stays for the prayers, ect.
The fact that 10+ people want to put 10+ homeless people on the streets for a night is disgusting. These people have needs, and this shelter is one of the only things they have going for them. Its the only time they can sleep with a roof over there head. DO NOT TAKE THEIR ROOMS!
Get a hotel, please. You guys are sick.
Anyhow, i hope you take my thoughts into consideration. Happy venturing.
- HOMELESS ACTIVIST VERSION OF DRDEATH
PS: 5 Dollars on the KING.
We'll do streams for both events, the Friday one (7PM EST/4PM PST) will be a test to see if things work.
All streams will be continuous, connection permitting.
As for commentary, I'll see what I can do about it. There's a lot of equipment crossing the border so I don't want to bring too much crap with me.
That said, I have purchased a new webcam since there seems to be enough interest already.

Who said it was a homeless shelter?
If its not a homless shelter, what is it?
Places just dont give free housing, or else i would never pay my rent.

Larry is one of the members(?) of the Mission, so we are paying him for the space with our entry fees.

Hahaha, You're hilarious DrDeath...and I concur with you.
A couple of questions:
1. Cards must be sleeved, but what about cards that are not in the deck proper, e.g. missions, locations, characters, etc.? (Never played competitively, so I've no idea of the standard.
2. To be clear, the only difference for the max 6 is the team can't have a printed grid above 6, correct?
Only the deck is required to be sleeved, other cards do not have to be.
Max 6 is the regular game but the characters on your team cannot have a 7 or 8 in their grid.
This implies that Beyonder, Tiffany, Captain Mar-Vell and Reyes are allowed. The battlesite, if any, do not apply to these restrictions.
Does anyone know whichhotels are nearest the mission? If anyone is staying in a particular hotel, let me know which one and I will book a room there.
The tournaments in Buffalo are coming up very quickly, just over two weeks left!
Please make sure you confirm your registration by either posting a reply or sending me an e-mail: jack@overpower.ca. Details about the tournament can be found by going to the first post in this topic.
Jack, what is the standing total for the main event?
19 confirmed.
I'm totally stoked. You guys are gonna make fun of me for not knowing all the rules. My first round opponent will probably pull his hair out. :P
FYI: Most of the Canadian Contingent will be staying at the Homewood Suites Buffalo-Airport (http://"http://homewoodsuites3.hilton.com/en/hotels/new-york/homewood-suites-by-hilton-buffalo-airport-BUFAPHW/index.html"). We have the large suite. If you're in the same hotel, or at least near by, let us know!

Live streaming is a MUST here Jack. Probably biggest OP tournament in the last 10 years. We absolutely MUST have a live stream. With your technical know how and computer knowledge I know you can make it happen. I will watch the entire thing.
Questions:
Can I have more info on the DC tournament?
Also can you bring your own food and drink to the tournament? If not well there be any sold on site?
Not much is known about it, but I'm going to assume the non-bracketed players will be each given one sealed DC deck and then play a mini tournament.
Food/drink should be allowed, we're going to have a breakfast on Saturday morning but that's all for the provided food. Not sure of the surrounding areas for lunch during the 80 minute break.
I don't live that far from the mission. I'm hoping to make it next week but it may be unlikely due to work obligations (my place of employment is in the midst of a transfer, so I've been putting in a lot of overtime to ensure the deadlines are met).
Just to clear something up mentioned earlier in the thread regarding the mission being a homeless shelter: That information is false. The mission is not a homeless shelter, it's actually a religious center for children that offers a variety of activities and services.
The Peacebridge event coming up next week is actually the first event that has been scheduled by those outside of the mission; I know this because I called to inquire about the availability and capacity of the mission for a possible non-OverPower related event in the near future. The mission essentially has two rooms; one large room and a smaller room and it has amenities such as bathroom, etc.
For those not staying at the mission for the night, be careful when leaving after 11pm. It's not a warzone by any stretch of the imagination and you shouldn't worry, but just use common sense and you should be fine.
More information about the DC tournament, I figured it would be as such but avoided speculation:
Quote from: Larry Van EttenAlso, the Saturday tourney (optional) will be a DC starter deck tourney.
Single elimination. The winner of each battle wins the others deck. They can use the additional cards to build a new deck each round. The game goes until there is only one winner - who gets all the cards.
Also, Larry is interesting in buying cards and you should contact him (ldvanetten@gmail.com) prior to the tournament to negotiate a price.
His want list (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Ahnqk14F6yKodFJ4ZDd5ME9wOTd3NE1CT1J1cFo1SFE&usp=sharing)
I wanted to give an update to everyone about the live stream. The link is http://overpower.ca/live
If you are subscribed to our YouTube page, there should be some notification going out when I start the broadcast.
We'll stream the US/Canada Max 6 tournament starting at 7PM Eastern (4PM Pacific, 2300UTC) on Friday. The main tournament will be starting at 11AM Eastern (8AM Pacific, 1500UTC) on Saturday.
Hello everyone!
I've arrived in Buffalo. It's Thursday. I won't be able to make the Friday Max 6 event, but Saturday is locked in. My hotel is 2 and half miles from the mission. A cab ride is a little steep, and its gonna be cold. Is anyone driving that might be willing to scoop me up on Saturday morning? I'll be ready at the convenience of whomever is willing to lend me a hand. I'm prepared to compensate for your help. Send me a private message!
Also, I can probably stop by the mission to visit and meet everyone Friday night if someone could drop me off at the hotel afterward. I'm very close to the mission, so I won't be too far out of the way.

Represent the good ole US of A, but more importantly the "Volunteer State"! LOL! ;D
I'm working the evening shift both days, but hopefully I'll be able to catch part of Saturday's live stream, before I go in that evening.

LIVE STREAMING IS UP!!! :o
Interesting discussion going on the live stream about the tourny rules and venture right now. Too bad there's not live chat log or something. I hope the 'mirror match' they're talking about is on film. 8) LOL!
Imust of turned this on right when the break started. Been staring at the table with a card that says "break" on it for an hour. Heard my horse, HotRod, got a win by playing Fortress when time was called. Maybe less break and more time per round next time?
The breaks between rounds have been due to very delayed last hands being played. We will address this at our next tournaments.
Stream is running great right now, I think Marcel vs. beanie is top 4?
Streaming down or is tourney over?
THE STTREAM DIED DURING MARCEL VS PLATINUS SEMI FINAL MATCHUP! ARGH
Not sure what happened during the live stream, obviously I couldn't really pay attention to the stream except to look at the network connection.
The winner of the tournament was BlueFire, aka Phil Keffer. Full details will be posted later on Sunday afternoon.
Thank you to all the people who showed up to the event, it was amazing to meet the people behind the aliases on this forum.
Hell yea, Go Phil! Good to see the old school smack you newbs down! And Marcel 2nd? Shows you the vets know their stuff.... Maybe cuz they dont sit around arguing for 11 pages about the ruling on a longshot card they will never use, and talk actual game strategy instead.
Go old school! (even if its canada old-school and not west side old-school)
The tournament was a lot of fun! Thanks to everyone who helped me with my deck.
Thanks for the props drdeath25.
Just to clarify, that 8-0 old school smack down was brought to u by the east side of the great US of A.
A big thanks goes out to Jack, Larry, Sean, Mike and anyone else who helped organize and run this past weekends event. It was great to finally meet everyone. I look forward to more opportunities to sit across the table from all you fine gentlemen and ladies.
Phil K
Phil Keffer went? That's completely unexpected. Who is next, Doug Simms? A Marcel vs. Phil final in 2013 is awesome, I look forward to seeing the upload of that one. Props to Jack on running the stream even with technical limitations, when it was actually running it looked great. The full tournament breakdown should be an interesting read, sounds like everyone had a good time.
I need to figure out a way to feasibly cross the streams between the East/West coast players, it could easily be a ~40 person tournament with a very high level of competition. Maybe a travel destination area like Vegas?
Definitely in for Vegas! :o
thanks to larry and jack for all the work hosting this!
somehow i managed to drag my deck to the 4th place prize, which was a box of original boosters. i'll probably be opening them later today, so if anyone needs any specials or characters for activators, and is willing to pay the shipping, i'll send them out if i come accross them
Doug Simms wanted to come to Buffalo for the event but was busy for that particular weekend.
Home... safe... sound... and happy. I had a blast at my first REAL OverPower tournament. You guys were amazing.
Nice to meet you guys.
Glad you made it home safe.
