Has anyone ever tried playing a game or tournament where you used only cards released up to a certain point?
I guess you might even try this as a deck building challenge, though if both players weren't playing that way, you'd likely be at a significant disadvantage.
In case you don't know what I mean: let's say you have a tournament where you can only use cards released in the Original and Powersurge sets. This would include any/all cards like universe, Any Character (I guess still called Any Hero), etc. No using "newer" specials even for old heroes.
I was wondering how that's turned out, if you have, and what stories you have.
Living vicariously,

bamf!, Teddy, and I did a Original/PowerSurge/Mission Control battle once. If you didn't using a strength (me :() deck, it was game over.
I've challenged myself to making pre-IQ decks before. In my (old :'() circle, we didn't build hyper-competetive decks, so I was able to build and play some pretty fun decks using some of those older cards. It was kinda nice... it kind of highlighted the nostalgia of using cards that are nearly 20 years old! :)

I remember hearing that Strength decks were a powerhouse for a while. What was the reason for that vs. other power types? In those days, I was not plugged in to any players outside of my own home, so I wasn't aware of any trends.

I think it really came down to the fact that they had better max-8 characters early on, especially considering their initial Specials (w/Powersurge):
E- Dr. Strange, Magneto, Professor X
F- Domino, Sabretooth, Wolverine
S- Hulk, Namor, Thing

No strength team was complete without Juggernaut! His early cards combined with an 8S grid made him target #1. I laughed when monumental gave him a JC card. Somebody at OverPower liked Juggy. :o

That's true, once IQ came, but I'm not sure he got a lot of play before that, since he was still a max-7. Really, I'm not sure he was any better than Colossus, until Juggs got his 8S
