Hello all!
So we've locked our date for the second Toronto meet up. We'll be doing it on Saturday, February 26th. That gives any interested out of towners time to plan. It will go from noon until we're all pretty much sick of each other. ;)
PM me for details.
As before we'll be hosting a free-play, so just come, bring a deck or two and play. No stakes, no tournament (yet!). If interest is high enough, we are thinking of creating an actual tournament situation in the spring. But one step at a time.
Also, like before, players will have the option of using our House Rules. PM me if you'd like me to send the file. For purposes of a fun time, it's not a requirement. Last time we had a mix of players using official rules and house rules. Just so long as each pair of players agrees before hand. (Also, the house rules aren't drastically different, it's still the same game, just cleaned up and less ambiguous.)
Hoping to see some new faces!
Cheers!
-BBH
I'm totally jealous of you guys! I would love to go but it'd be a 5,000+ mile roundtrip (8,000+ km).
*sigh*
At least post pictures!
Sometime this week me and my buddies should be posting the videos we shot of us playing OP last Saturday.
Posted! I was so busy that I forgot to post them on the forums.
This next meet should be even better than the last one if we get all the people that have shown an interest.
The first event was awesome for what it was:
9 players,
10pm closing time,
food poisoning,
and getting luck sacked by that guy with the max 6 deck (you know who you are!)

I am hoping to bring in 2 or 3 brand new players. I'm training some new recruits! :D

I don't remember playing anyone who had a max 6 deck... hmmm? :P

I may be able too as well.
I have a friend who says he'll play if I build him a deck. Plus my brother might play again if we're not too white and nerdy for him.

man I wish I could make this one... but getting married in Feb and then off on the honeymoon. Gonna have to wait till meetup #3 to get some games in.
Wish I could get my OPOnline to work again...

Once again, I'll keep you informed. If this meetup goes well we'll do a tournament type situation in April. Of course, there will also be a free play area for people who don't want to do an actual tournament (I figure there'll be a couple).
Congratulations on the nuptials. I miss our online battles... :( I haven't see BIOS around either.

Unless it's after April 21st, don't count on me coming to #3 :P

For those that can't make it, is it possible you guys can spare the time to describe how it went, especially what were the teams and cards people used. Some of the pictures of the first meet up were interesting because I got a peek of what cards you all were using.

I think more photos will definitely happen. As well, we may keep track of what decks are used and what beats what.

Where are you located?
If you're able to come to Toronto, don't worry about skill level, just come and have fun. The February 26th get-together is just an open free play. Meet people, have a few laughs and see different playing styles.

i mean REALLY bad. when we played, some people didn't get venture, so we ended up playing without it
in fact, i think i've only played a couple games WITH venture in my life (and was promptly slaughtered by venturing too many)

You learn by doing - no one ever started off as an expert. ;) I hope you decide to drop in. You might also find people willing to trade or sell the cards that you're looking for.

Quoted for truth!
Haha, if you come out you can play my friend who I was just teaching tonight how to play. With my coaching + metagaming he beat my dad and I twice with a FFP deck I threw together in about 30 minutes.
I hope you guys keep doing these meet ups. My wife and I would like to come at some point. We are in the U.S. but we are only about 6 hours away. Unfortunately our passports won't be in for awhile, so we won't be able to make it in February.

That's the goal. I'm hoping that interest is high enough for a full fledged tournament in April. I have purchased a couple of DC Holo-Heroes which I will offer up as Prize Support for the first one, if there are enough players.
Where are you located? I figured since your site was on Pacific Standard time you were on the West coast...
-BBH
Actually, I'm in Pennsylvania, not West Coast. I guess Pacific time is the default for the site and I just never changed it.

Karmanal of Zert is also in Pennsylvania, I think. If you do make a trip for future meetups, you might co-ordinate with him in case he can come along.
Larry Van Etten (The owner of Orange King Collectibles on eBay) said he's coming with his son. And I have a few more who have mentioned they'll be coming in. I'm hoping to double last month's numbers, if not more.
-BBH
This meet up sounds great. I really wish I could make it but Toronto is just a little too far for me. Flying really isn't in the cards for me financially right now and I don't have enough vacation time to drive it.
That being said, I could easily make the drive in a single day if I had the time, so if these keep happening I may get to one sooner or later.

I think if we are able to keep planning them at least a month in advance, out-of-towners who are within driving distance can plan ahead if they want to make the journey.
Also, a good prize in a tournament situation would make it a lot more appealing... ;)

I have emailed you the info, plus our house rules (which are optional) and a list of cards for possible trade (I have a few on your list.)
For the rest of you who are thinking about it - Here's the info again -
We're at 918 Bathurst St, in Toronto, from noon until 11 pm. They are giving us the space for $5 a head, which isn't bad.
Map link below:

But let us know if you're coming, (if you haven't already), so I have an idea as to numbers.
Cheers!

This day can't come soon enough! I totally have my fingers crossed hoping that we get 20+ people for this one. Perhaps if this gathering meets expectations the locals could come up with crash space/hotel money to make it more bareable for the people who have to drive 4+ hours each way. It would also be nice to get some more old players like "Marcel" and "The Bertrands" which I think would be possible the more attractive the event is.

I think we'll have about ten again. So many people keep saying they want to come, then bail out when the day nears.
I have sent multiple emails to Marcel, and was in touch with Ty Bertrand as well. Ty is interested, but is shooting that day (he's a photographer by trade now) but wants to come to the next one.
I'm bringing 4 people myself. 1 confirmed (unless he gets work for the day) and 3 high possibilities. The 3 are brand new players, though. One of them has yet to try the game.
I want to do a tournament in April, but I won't do it unless we get 20 people. If we get less, then we'll just do another free-play meetup.
But the magic word is 'HOLOHEROES.' I have a few Holo Heroes that I'm offering up as prizes if we get the numbers. Psssst... pass it on.
-BBH
That sucks if we can't improve on the last one. You give people 2 months heads up and they still don't show. :-\
On the bright side that's awesome you managed to get a hold of Ty, it would be nice to see him again for sure. I haven't been able to get a hold of Marcel either, I tried through youtube, but he hasn't logged in for 2 weeks, I think the only way to get him will be to phone him.
Hope you guys get the turn out you are hoping for. Being down here in California prevents me from participating (not to mention I still don't have a passport) but maybe some day I can visit my neighbors up north in Canada. Good luck and do keep us posted. :)
It would be awesome if one or more of you guys could post some "reports" of the games that get played. Characters used, critical plays, etc. Would help those of us who can't be there live a little vicariously!

I will endeavour to keep a log of the games, teams and players. We're not doing anything structured, it's pretty much a drop in free-play, but I am curious myself as to the results.
-BBH
I'll also try to log my games for a report. I have 2 of my own decks that either I will be running, or my brother. After the event I will be posting an analysis on both decks for everyone to read.
How about some way to record a video of a few matches and post them on youtube? My circle has been dreaming to do this at our san diego comic-con meetsups, but we never find the right equipment.
If you guys dont do it, i suppose we will have to do it in July at this years meetup
We're going to get video, my cousin will come with a Flip camera. I might consider getting one myself so we can get more exposure from our events. I'll also be taking stills with my point and shoot cameras.
Well, Meetup # 2 has come and gone. Next meetup is tentatively going to be on Saturday, April 30th.
We have decided that Meetup #3 will be a tournament situation. 4 rounds of swiss, with top 8 moving to an elimination round.
Prizes will depend on numbers. If we get enough people, top prize will be a DC Holo hero. More people means a bigger prize pool. An entry gift will also be likely. Pass the Gestalt has some promos from the old days, as do I. Everything TBD.
Overall, a good time was had by all.
In all we had 15 people playing, which is 6 more from the last time. Admittedly, 3 of those were trainees that I invited, and thus were using my cards... but they are definitely interested in the game and want to attend future events!
I attempted logs of matches, but not everyone filled out their log cards, so I don't have a complete report of who won and lost, but I have most people's decks recorded...
I was primarily using my Mighty Thor team with a win ratio of 6-1:
Thor, X-Man, Scarlet Witch and Dr. Strange
I also used my Avalon Team, but was 0-2 this time (I got greedy on the venture):
Magneto, Prof. X, Bishop and Cable.
Zippa-Head an energy deck and had a recorded win ratio of 2 - 2 (But I know he played more games than listed so I don't know the rest of his tally):
The Flash, Holocaust, Jean Grey: Dark Phoenix, Prof. X,
Hot Rod had a nice strength/fighting concept, but I don't have his log so I don't know his record:
Hulk, Heroes for Hire, Landslide and Hawkeye
D'arcy (Zippa's brother) was on hand, but I have neither his team nor his ratio recorded.
Spencer (Hot Rod's brother) had an energy team (Again don't have his records):
Onslaught, Holocaust, Scarlet Witch, Havok
Pass the Gestault (Hot Rod's Dad) using his Evil Intellect team (I have his card, but he didn't record anything, grumble):
Lex Luthor, Black King, Donald Pierce and Batman: Detective. (Batman occasionally swapped out for Mr. Fantastic.)
Jack was on hand with a couple of fighting decks, (Jack you can fill us in with your win ratio):
Nick Fury, The Hand, Starjammers and Silver Sable.
Captain America, Wonder Woman, Zealot and 3 stat Spider Woman
Ted (Jack's Brother) was using a Cape Citadel team, I don't know his overall ratio, but this match represented my one loss with the Thor team:
Xaos, Crux, Landslide and Rapture.
Bamf was on hand as well with an Intellect team, don't know his ratio:
Reyes, Donald Pierce, Cerebro and Neron.
Matt (a buddy of mine) was using his new favourite teams :
Sabretooth's Harem: Wonder Woman, Zealot, Black Cat and Sabretooth (recorded ratio: 2-0)
Evil Geniuses: Lex Luthor, Donald Pierce, Bastion and Dracula (recorded ratio: 0-2)
Claude (my boss, OP trainee) played a Four Freedoms team with a ratio of 4-1:
Mr. Fantastic, Namor: Submariner, Invisible Woman, Thing
Dave (Claude's son, OP trainee) played a strength deck with a ratio of 1-4
Iron Man, She Hulk, Colossus and Spider Woman
Adrianna (friend of mine, OP trainee and X-men fanatic) played one game with the Danger Room. 0-1 ratio, but that doesn't count it was her first game ever, and it was a training game:
Beast, Gambit, Rogue and Iceman.
John (friend of mine and Pass the Gestalt's) was on hand with a fighting team and recorded ratio of (2-1):
Maverick, Shang Chi, Reavers Hawkeye.
And last but not least, Breadmaster showed up and tried a few teams, I don't know his ratio but he took at least one win against the FF deck Claude was using.
Asteroid M: 3 stat Magneto, Scarlet Witch, Blob and Quicksilver
Cape Citadel: Mercury, Rapture, Xaos and Landslide
That's about it. More tournament information as he lock in all the details.
Cheers!
-BBH
I'll have something written up when I get time, hopefully it'll still be fresh in my mind.
I was 1 win, 4 loss in the meet up. I won against BBH's Avalon but lost to Pass The Gestalt, John, bamf and Ted.
D'arcy is zippa_head's brother.
This.Was.Painful.
Note to self: don't change your deck at 2am (without play testing) because you have a "Good Idea." (It's a Trap!)
So yeah, I managed to grasp defeat from the jaws of victory while playing BBH's Thor deck by turning a first turn bet 7 and win situation, into a first turn bet 5 and win followed by conceding the game next turn.
Moving on,
Played 1 or 2 (I can't remember) more games agasn't BBH's Thor deck: got man handled.
Played Jack's cousin (Ted I think?) who was running a Cape Citedal deck: got crushed 2 times.
Played slit wrists in bathtub: failed.
February 26th 2011 is a day that shall live in infamy.
my record was decent for the first time out
claude and i split 2 games (cape citadel for me, four freedoms for him)
then i played the family guys at harv's place (correct me if i get the following wrong)
played jack's brother twice and lost both (he ran pierce, onslaught, holocaust and x-man...i think. i ran an abortion of a deck with shadow king, xavier, orion and h4h)
then played jacks cousin (sorry about forgetting the name's guys :() squeaked out a win in a drawn out battle. asteroid m for me, cape citadel for him
then played harv and split 2 games with asteroid m again, with some deck constrution pointers helping to win the second (and drawing DOW in the first hand rather than the last ;)). harv used a danger room team in the first and a different team in the second (off the top of my head i can only recall multiple man)
Sounds like it was a great time all around. Looks like Canada is really exploring the limits of Shang Chi decks, I'd like to see where that goes. You guys play with The Marvels cards, right? Man, Dr. Strange is so insanely good with that teammate avoid.

most insane personal avoid I could ever have imagined. In my opinion, it rivals a BJ/CW avoid.

Been there, done that. Never a good plan. ;)
You totally had me that one round. 'No energy power cards may be played' and Rage in play to lock down the strength icons! Of course you couldn't have known at the venture that I didn't have a negate, or that I wouldn't have drawn one if you bet 7. If I had drawn a negate when you had bet the 7 missions, I would have won... so even though the overall game didn't pan out for you, I think you played that round the right way.

There was only one person using Shang Chi, though yes, he IS good.
Yeah, Dr. Strange rocks with the addition just that one card. I kind of liked using him before, but now he's a no-brainer for a reserve character.
There are a couple in our group who are morally opposed to to the 'Marvels' because they don't view them as official. I am not one of them. I don't generally like homemades as a rule, but Marvels would have been real had the game continued, and are generally a universally accepted 'homemade.' The Marvels add so much spice to so many decks, I love 'em!

Agreed. It's very nice. Almost guarantees that your opponent won't go for Shang Chi! It's so risky!
-BBH
I had Shang-Chi in one of the two decks I have ready to go... in case I ever have the time to make it to one of these things.
Was running Shang-Chi, HFH, Black Cat with Namor: Sub Mariner in reserve. Outback battlesite to give me three shots at getting a massive discard for my opponent. With the Crossing mission set and the KO event. Only using 3 specials per front line character.
And my Muir Island deck, again with the Outback. Deadly card advantage if you get the aspect played early.
And i've been trying to get something going with Mysterio and the Ray... to take advantage of the attacks face down OPD's... but I've been having little success in play testing. Tried using the Riddler as well... no dice. I've had more success with the Marauders and the Flash in reserve. If anyone has any tips on making this one work I would welcome the advice.

Try using Morlock Tunnels as a homebase. The aspect lets the whole team attack face down, and it can't be negated.

I played a game against my cousin before the meetup. I bet 4 on my first hand and my cousin conceded because of a bad bluff (I had 3 8-Anys, 6/7/8F and a Starjammers 11). Second hand, I bet for the win with 3. I had 2 8-Anys, 7A, 8F and Starjammers' Draw 3. My cousin had no negate and I ended up winning the venture with 39 points to something.

Hi,
Many thanks to Sean [Big Bad Harve] for organizing, and fanning the flame of OverPower in the Toronto area. Great seeing old and new players alike. Doing OverPower for Fleer/Skybox was one of the most fun things I have ever done in my life, brought back tons of memories.
I played Lex Luthor/Black King/Donald P/Batman Det[R] just to show that an Intellect team using a Holo Hero was quite playable. I switched to Hellfire/Mr Fantastic vs. Any Heroes, since the Draw 3 tends to be more useful than the Sting Operation pitch all Intellect Icons. Also gave me an excuse to do a really bad Christian Bale impersonation: "Stop moving that damn lightstand while I'm trying to make an attack! Can't you see I'm working here! All I need is some small minded geek while I'm trying to launch an attack!" <g>
For me the sad part is Marvel never knew what a great game they had, and it's potential. Even after 15 years, new strategies and deck designs still pop up, and new generation of gamers is discovering it.
Look forward to Toronto #3. Great to get some Buffalo, and other American players up!
Michael
Great pictures as always Jack!
The turnout was pretty solid at 15, though I'd still like to think we can do 20 for the next one if we get the people from buffalo to show up.

Great pictures as always Jack!
The turnout was pretty solid at 15, though I'd still like to think we can do 20 for the next one if we get the people from buffalo to show up.
The next one will have prizes!
I have a spare Beyonder and holoheroes up for grabs for the top player(s). Full details TBA, but the date will definitely be on Saturday April 30th.

You have two months! Plan a trip! It's only a few thousand Km away... :P

I think you're joking, but I might plan that exact trip...

And you'd be more than welcome at our event! The more people come the better the prizes I can offer up!
It about a 3 or 4 day drive... or 40 hours if you go non-stop! ;D Come with a carload of people and you can all take turns! Besides, there's lots to do in Toronto in addition to our OverPower match, good place for a vacation.
And, by the way, what are you doing up at 6:30 am!?!?! Don't you California types sleep until noon before hitting the surf? :P
-BBH
I'll try to convince my brother and cousin to arrive on time for April's meetup. The 30th seems like a better day for the meet up, I'll have more time to prepare my decks and strategies after my finals.

Road trip is the only way to do it! and if it was gonna happen, you can bet I would at least be bringing my 2 brothers!

That's funny! I live about 7 hours from the nearest surf-worthy beach! I'm way up at the top end of the Sacramento Valley. If you drive an hour West, North, or East, you'll hit mountains on all sides.
Seriously, I had a dentist appt so I had to get to work early. I hate getting to work early :'(

Just hitting the bong that early, sir. And I would love to come to your event and get some free holo-heros, but a 3-4 day drive is out of the question for me, although if ncandelorra is driving, pick me up in San Francisco, please!

Free holohero, eh? You're that confident in your abilities? ;D I say 'bring it on!' I'm sure they can fit one more into the car... ;)

For Real? Coming from the same dude i beat up on overpoweronlne when you were using the marvels and I wasn't? How about we save me the trouble of a drive and do a best 2 out of 3 for a batman avenger on OPOnline? Ill even let you use the Marvels' again. I just hope you really have the B:A to put up. I definetly do, and its my only copy, thats how confident I am in MY abilities. You will reply to me if YOU are confident in YOUR abilities, sir. ;)

Online, no. I want to look into your eyes as I beat your best team into a whimpering pile of jelly. ;D After you go undefeated in the tournament, of course, because you're THAT good. In fact, I may offer a 2nd holo hero to you or anyone else who DOES go undefeated.
But if you come to Toronto, we can have our grudge match above and beyond the tournament.
See you in April! :-*

Man, I would love to spectate this match! That new program Jack's building can't come soon enough!
The 2nd holo hero to anyone that goes undefeated might actually force me to make a real deck for this thing. :P

This is actually good. I will let you stare into my eyes, see my calm smirk as I pretend to bet 1. Bet at least 3 on the first turn of the first game, regardless of my hand selection, cause i just DO crazy stuff like that. Undefeated? Maybe Not. Depends on who shows up. But Undefeated against YOU for the weekend? I'll certaintly wager to that Mr. "Play Beyonder as written!", "I can play my Serpent Crown Defensively!", "I have my own meta's!", "beyonder, galactus, onslaught, cable should be sum deck legal!", "I'm probably running a doubleshot or basic universe cause I can redraw after using one!".
All I ask is to play by the REAL rules... See you in April, I hope you make it to MY event in July in San Diego :-*
just got real up in here
undefeated heads up for an entire weekend? man that's some confidence (hubris?) right there. even playing a lean best of 7, you'd have to take him 4 times...what about bad luck draws?

That's quite a boast. Very well, we'll put it to the test if you come up for April. And if you don't go undefeated? I mean, with your obvious ability to boast about your skill you should offer up some more incentive for me to improve my clearly sub-par OverPower skills. As anyone here can tell you, my deckbuilding and playing skills are sorely lacking. Surely then, you're willing to bet that Holo hero to my holo hero that you'll never lose a single game to me?
Bluster and machismo aside - the Tournament itself will be using my rule reforms, which will be posted well in advance so people can absorb them and get used to them If anyone has questions or thoughts about them, feel free to PM me about it. I'll be posting all the details, rule reforms and prizing information shortly. I have to confirm the space we'll be playing at before I lock into anything. But it's looking good so far.
Resuming bluster now - So yeah! Are you man enough to put your money where your mouth is? Since I'm clearly not that good, surely there's no risk for you. I'll be waiting.

Perhaps I didn't make myself clear - the
tournament will be using my rule reforms. He'll have plenty of time to review and test them. I don't care if he does, or doesn't want to enter into it.
If he wants our little grudge match then it will be official rules as he requested. He says that he'll have no problem beating me completely and utterly. I simply asked if he wanted to put that to the test.
On that note, I haven't been taking the bravado all that seriously, it was an amusing back and forth, and I would hope that mine hasn't been taken seriously either. I wouldn't expect him to come all this way for something this silly. But, given the hostility festering in other threads, I have no more interest in continuing this banter lest it get far too out of hand.
This site is about discussing the game, and having some fun. It's a game, nothing more. If a friendly rivalry develops, all the better! The operative word is 'friendly.' If Dr. Death and I ever meet in person (I'd love to come down to California to play with you West Coast guys, but it's not in the cards in the near future, pardon the pun) then we can discuss our wager (I'm up for it if you still are.) If he has the luxury of coming up here for my event, and is planning to do so, then great! We'll welcome him with open arms, play some cards, have some fun and make our grudge-match entertaining for the audience. Then we'll have drinks afterwards to laugh our asses off about it.
If it's any other way, then why even bother?

Love it BBH. I very much look forward to venturing some missions with you again.

QTF!
Well said BBH! I like to talk a little trash every now and then, but one should always take mind of the tone and how it may come across. Anytime you have a group of males testosterone can slips in and guys start chest beating. :P Ultimately this is a GAME guys and even if you think you are God's gift to this little card GAME called overpower, it doesn't add inches to your... "johnson" and the point is for both people playing to have fun. Most people outside our little world/community would probably think the 'supreme strategist' guy spends waaaaay too much time thinking about this little fantasy GAME anyway. Its not like being great at overpower solves world hunger or makes you rich. I'm just trying put put things in perspective and remind us to always have fun, be civil, and enjoy the community that play this GAME. Otherwise what the point of playing a GAME dead for a decade? :-\
