Details are brief, they are hosted in Toronto, Ontario on October 17 and October 18. Marcel Lojet (OP GOD) is hosting this one.
Location is 105 The Queensway, Toronto, Ontario.
Is this invitation only? ;)
The wording of the event is confusing, that's what I was told to call it. It's open to everyone.
I do believe we have plans to do a larger invite only for the top players (OverPower Invitational?...) but that's still months away in terms of planning and logistics.
Details are brief. I do not want to steal any thunder from the Columbus momentum. The tourney will be open to everyone who can make it and will be the largest tournament since the last nationals. All details will be given at the beginning of July so that people will have time to make plans. Until then the only information is the location: Toronto Canada on October 17-18. Also the location of the tourney is listed in a post before this.
Start to book the time off and see if you can become an Overpower Champion.

Any plans on a Toronto meet up before the tournament for playtesting?
Yes, we like to do meetups every other month. Plus a few of us meet up independently for matches. We'll advertise when the next casual meetup will be, it will likely be in September sometime.
Great! I'm hoping to get quite a lot of testing accomplished with some vastly superior players before October.
Hello there my south of the border friends.
We are about two months away from the Overpower Championship. I could only imagine that, the U.S.A would like to have a great showing. Toronto is very central and highway friendly. The tournament is near a Howard Johnson express and the airport. Contact local members to see if you can get picked up at the airport.

Will there be games on all 3 days (Fri, Sat, & Sun)?
I'm going to try to come in from Massachusetts, so I'd like to figure out times for flights or if I need to take a day off from work and drive.
Properly speaking, I believe the plan is to only have the games on the Saturday. We're also planning an afterwards gathering at my place up the street for some relaxation, grudge matches, and drinking.
But there's nothing saying that we can't meet up on Sunday with anyone interested in more games. Especially if out-of-towners are staying the extra day.

We need to hold a op tourney in USA stop holding them in Canada!
3 of the 4 tournaments this year were in the USA - State College, PA; Buffalo, NY, and Columbus, OH.
The group's goal is to cycle through - So State College will be the March Break tournament, Buffalo will be late spring, Ohio will be in the summer, and we'll host the Toronto event in the autumn.
Since Proxies are valid, can I use my Hot Comic Babe Power cards?
I want to say yes but that would allow someone to make all 36 types of power cards with the same image to confuse their opponent. Marvels is the only one we're allowing to have varying images since there's really no consensus set for people to use.
So I'm saying no unless Marcel wants to overrule it.
Alright, i just wanted to ask, i have all the power cards i need, i just don't think they are that nice looking...lol
Then again.. Marcel did use the play testing power cards during the last tournament. Tough decision to make, his cards are technically illegal too.
but chuu's look better :)
Hmmmm tough indeed.
I never wanted to cause a dilemma by using play test cards In The last tournament. I have removed them for the Toronto tourney, even though proxies are allowed, I also don't want to cause any confusion. So no chuu unfortunately not. However, they are awesome. And I am sure people coming to the tourney would love to get sets off you.

Is it mandatory that a deck contain an event for tournaments, or do the same deck building principles (51 cards no event, 56 with) apply as normal?
It's not mandatory to run events. Standard deckbuilding rules apply.
Thanks, just wanted to double check :)
how come it was changed from top 8 playing for the win, to top 4?
It seemed to be an agreed upon concept with active players at the tournaments this year. First benefit is it decreases the playoffs by a round allowing for another round of Swiss play. People also were under the belief that an 8th ranked player shouldn't have an opportunity to play and knock out a 1 ranked based off one game. I may not be under complete aggreeance, but based off the last two tournaments it is quite an efficient format. And often produces the strongest deck and player as the winner for the day. If you have thoughts they are always warranted as the new tournament season will start next year and rules and formats will be chatted about over winter.
As for the renege ruling for the OVERPOWER CHAMPIONSHIPS
it was discussed between judging parties, that to keep things simple and to address the issue. We are implementing three things. First if there is any play made, missed by one party and not brought up by the other for any reason. It becomes a legal play for the game. This is controversial I know. However we can't have a judge sit at every game. Onus is always on players to find mistakes. Secondly, if there is an error in play or cheating. The player is to call over the judge and then the judge will take over the situation. NO CHOICE will be left to the player at this point, you can not say whether the renege happens or not. This is to eliminate any intimidation from players. Lastly, should a renege occur. All renege rules will be followed and the offended player will get to chose an additional mission to advance one level (players choice).
Though I am unsure this will remedy all scenarios, until we discuss it as a whole again for the community over winter. This should suffice. Applied to all renege scenarios of the year it would have made a big difference. There will also be a warning system placed on top. Should three reneges happen to one player in the tournament, they will be asked to concede the tournament. Should they refuse they will be disqualified.
Should you have any concerns please message me. I do not want this discussed in this thread.
Thank you,
The championships are around the corner.
Will you be there ?

What are the rules regarding your opponents various piles (dead, power pack)? Am I allowed to sort through it upon request? The deck, obviously not :)

No. Neither are you allowed to sort through your own dead pile or power pack.
If you are concerned about an illegal deck, you can request a judge to go through your opponent's deck to look for any offending card(s).
Of course, this doesn't apply if you play a special that allows for you to sort through either yours, opponent's cards. (Deathstrike, Web head etc.)
Would we be able to have the Venture piles clearly defined? like a sheet of paper that says Completed, Reserve and Defeated? I'm an idiot and don't keep track of venture well so this would help me keep track of the ventures, mine and my opponents.

I personally wouldn't have a problem with that, since venture piles are always above board. We'd have to clear that with the others before I confirm but I'm not opposed.
Obviously, though, you're not allowed to take notes about your opponent's discards and plays, etc.

Interesting, thanks. That's actually contrary to most other card games.
I asked not because I was concerned about cheating, but because I had to make a decision during a test game which came down to statisticalt probability. The power back and its contents were a factor of that.

Do you mind clarifying this rule for me? Does this mean that (1) I am never allowed to look through my own dead pile or power pack until I have played a particular special card (like Web head or Storm's Gathering winds); (2) I cannot look through my own dead pile or power pack unless I have one of those cards placed or in hand (meaning I could play one or am deciding if I want to play one); or (3) I cannot look through my own dead pile or power pack unless I have one of those cards in my deck (e.g., I may not have one in my hand, but could draw into one because I have a draw three in my hand, and I want to plan ahead)?
Also, what counts as legal note taking? I have seen games where (1) players keep track of the codes from specials that have been played from their opponent's battle site (so to catch violators of the duplicate code rule); (2) players keep track of the venture total on paper (essentially just writing down the total sum); and (3) players keep track of how many cards their opponent has in their hand or placed ( to catch people who try to draw extra cards). Would any of these be legal?

You are never allowed to view your own dead pile or power pack piles during the game. It's on you to remember what you've used.
You can only look through the piles when a card is played that allows it. You must actually play the card, it's not enough to just have it in your deck, or in hand or placed.
As for note taking, we've never really had this come up. No one I've seen takes notes. I'm not sure what the official tournament stance would have been back in the day, though I have a pretty good idea that it's not allowed.
Personally speaking, Chuu's request to just have a notepad to keep track of his opponent's venture doesn't bother me, seeing as he's not keeping track of anything that's not already above board. But taking notes about things that have happened in-game, and cards played would be an entirely different matter.
I don't even need to keep notes on the venture, I just want to use a labels on the table to show which pile is which, this is in case the piles get moved accidently, it'll make it easier to identify where each pile was...if anyone understands what i mean.
Thanks for the clarification, BBH.

I see. I don't think that would be a problem.
Our table space is more often enough adequate to keep them distinct, but having a marker for more cramped scenarios isn't a bad idea.
I dont see how taking notes would ever be illegal. I mean, your only taking notes on things you have seen on the board. Whether you are noting which cards your opponent has played, so you can guess what he has left in his deck, or to try and have a decklist if you play him later in the tournament, your just writing down what you have seen. Some people cant remember stuff like that in their brain, and like the put it in writing. How would it ever be illegal to write something down so you dont forget it?
i think tournaments are like a casino...a casino would never let you write stuff down since it gives you an "unfair" advantage..
as long as it isn't interfering with the game play and flow of the game im fine with it... but still everything involved in the game is skill, how you make your deck, how you play it, what cards you are weak to, your strength and weaknesses.
i am not against it if people would want to but... its like in a chess match you have to enhance your mental activity to make crucial moves and attempt to out think your opponent in quick time, its all part of the game. work on your memory, tactics, strategy, etc.
registration fee must be in canadian currency or is US$ ok? and how much is it?
i'm pretty sure Marcel would have no problem taking american money...
Come to think of it, I'll be exhanging American to Canadian money at a rate of $1.05 - LOL
It's $25 cdn. I will take American at par. PayPal ahead or cash on the day.
Over $1000 in prizes.
As for note taking and venture placement.
I am not opposed to chuu bringing in his own venture board and one for an opponent, however your opponent is not obligated to use it. I will not have anything on the table other than dividers.
Note taking has not been an issue or relevant in the past. Though I would not be against it, I will stick with status quo for the year and not allow it. We can bring this up during winter meetings.
It's around the corner. A new champion will be crowned. Decades in the making.

i'm ok with it being my opponents option to use my Venture Board, I'll just say that my Venture board will be SEXY...lol..
what do you mean by intimidation?
Intimidation - So you don't have to feel like the choice is in you. People might not renege trying to not be the bad guy. Or they feel intimidated by the person they are playing may get upset about the decision. Though someone like you BREADMASTER may not be intimidated by anyone. Some people have inert fears of conflict and would or could be swayed into not reneging. I am merely saying it is put to the judge to resolve once called over, not the player.

I'd like to thank Marcel for hosting this tournament, it was a great success, I believe this sentiment is felt by everyone that was there. We had 21 players and Duncan made an appearance mid-way through the tournament! Really feels like overpower keeps getting stronger every tournament.
I agree. Everyone who had a hand in making the tournament happen deserves a lot of praise and thanks.
Also, for anyone who's hesitant about attending any of these tournaments, I'd strongly urge you to consider attending any future gatherings, whether big or small. This was my first serious tournament, and I will most certainly be attending the rest in the circuit next year.
I had the absolute pleasure of being included in a really special community this weekend.
Chuu said it best: Overpower keeps getting better and better.
yep, thanks marcel. that man was wiped out by the end of night
are we giving results, or waiting?
My first tourney was a blast. I lost all ten games including pick up games. To the uninitiated in overpower I'm spinning it as "I competed in the international championship iin Toronto." But the ugly details will be posted soon enough. Thanks to all. Kyoujin, did we play? Chuu your proxies are the bomb and the babe set gotta be legal at peace bridge, right Larry?
Yes, we did! I was on the business end of your Standoff Saturday evening! A shame it wasn't one of the filmed videos, because it was pretty nasty :(
I shifted the Standoff from AoA Wolverine to the Jammers, as I literally had all their BBCs (Big Boy Cards). I threw Professor X at Wolverine and out came The Dark Beast activator along with Acrobatics...
Also, and shame on me for forgetting, big thanks to Marcel and Amanda for insisting on driving me back to my hotel not once, but TWICE.
Just wanted to add my Sincere, Thank you to Marcel, Amanda, Jack, Dan and anyone else involved in putting this together. Sean, Thank you for the invite to the after party. sorry I couldn't stick around. Also a Special Thanks!! to all of you who stayed there with me, Friday night, after dinner ,until my wife showed up, it's nice to be part of a community that looks out for their own, even if youv'e only known them a short time. Maybe next year we can make the Zoo. Hope to see everyone in the spring.
Larry got three babe sets from me, that's gotta be enough to make them legal at peace bridge...lol
So who won this thing?
Full write up is coming soon.
Phil won. Andy placed second.
you're going to love how the 3rd/4th place father vs. son match was decided...lol
I also had a great time at the tourney. Thanks to everyone for the preparation, prizes, etc.; but also to all the players that participated.
A couple of things from the above questions. 1. Will the Babes set be legal? Not to skirt the question but I would like some feedback from the Forum. The proxy question is also part of item 2.
2. Along with the Babes, there was a discussion about making proxies legal at the Peace Bridge 2015 tourney. Will all proxies be legal? Before I even attempt at an answer I would like to put out a discussion question. Do we want new people at the tourneys? That is rhetorical; of course we do. So what should the cost of a competitive deck be for that person? Should it be $100, $200, $300 or more? I put together a deck at the OP Cup for one of the players. He was interested in purchasing the deck. It priced out at $380 (I did offer to sell it much lower). It was still too much for him.
If the cost of a competitive deck (including all the "big boy" cards) costs $300, how many new, and younger players, are we going to get at the tourneys? My thought is: NOT VERY MANY. So what can be done? Should we allow proxies?
That made me think about what my goal was with the store at these tourneys. I want to provide cards to players (or collectors). What I don't want to do is stop someone from coming to a tourney because they can't afford three or four $20 cards they need for their deck. So with that logic I am very seriously considering allowing proxies at the Peace Bridge tourney.
Also, regarding the store. I have customers all over the world. I get new customers every week. Allowing the proxies at tourneys will not impact me significantly. I would rather get new players involved.
3. Would it be fair to players who have spent $300 for a deck to compete against a player using proxies and spent $25 on a deck? Hmm. good question.
Thoughts?
Here are my thoughts:
1) The only hard to get cards in the babes set are the 5AP,6AP,7AP,8AP and 5MP. IF proxies are not allowed I feel that the babe set should still be allowed except for the power cards i just mentioned, it's not that i'm trying to push my cards, it's just that they are so much prettier than the current power cards, lol. I think allowing the normal babes power cards (excluding 5AP,6AP,7AP,8AP,5MP) would not put anyone at a disadvantage. If people have trouble getting the normal 36 power cards for their decks then they are going to have way more disadvantages...
2) I think proxy legality should be determined by the tournament organizer. but we do want to get new players into the game so allowing them would be a smart play.
3) This question is subjective, over the last 15 years, i have spent thousands on Overpower and i'll continue to spend more until I finish my collection. The only reason I've spent all this money is to Play Overpower, that's all. When I was in high school spending my limited funds on Overpower, I wasn't thinking "With these cards i'll be able to win tournaments" I just wanted to play and that sentiment remains, I just want to Play Overpower. Hell, if someone needed cards for a tournament I would have no problem lending them the cards, I'd probably even get beaten by my own cards...but I got to play...lol.
I'm in agreement with chuu
I think proxies are good for the game, but I also believe it's ultimately up to who's running the tournament to set the rules.
I used 4 proxies this weekend that probably run over 200 dollars (beyonder/dow/5m/anext), so I can understand the frustration by someone who did spend the money on them.
By allowing proxies the competition is on level playing field. Everyone has access to every card. It's pure player skill and same laws of probability applied to all. If the 6-8 students I have trying the game on Fridays have to drop a few C-notes to join us and our tourneys they won't be able to.
as a collector and player, yeah i may not have all the cards still or yet... do i want to win a match because someone hasn't spent 1000+$ on collecting so many cards to build and find your perfect deck?
as a collector i know proxy cards aren't legit and i still value the original cards for collecting purposes, the real cards will retain their value. i dont mind proxies because of new artwork to give more spice to your deck if you want to, i would rather have more people get involved in this old game so something has gotta give.
in poker every player starts with the same amount of chips, skill and luck determines who ends up with them all at the end
so... allow proxies, or create a card restriction list for the tournament format like yugioh does. avoid the gap, get people to get creative again with deck building and unique strategies and personal flavor.
I think Larry has a very valid point.
The primary reason people don't participate in or even investigate some games is because of financial accessability.
I think for the time being the discretion of the tournament organizer is the most diplomatic method, but if we all intend to make the community grow, we might want to consider a more concrete, clear solution, possibly created by a rules committee, on the event of its instatment.
Deck list is up now.
http://overpower.ca/wiki/OverPower_Championships_2014#Decks
Stats:
Most used team character: Spawn in 7 decks, Dr. Strange was also used 7 times but his 3 and 4 stat card was used 4 and 3 times respectively. Following those two, The Starjammers and Scarlet Witch saw 4 each.
Most used mission: Shattered Image 8/21 decks.
Any Heroes were featured in 15/21 decks.
Team OverPower (also Team Toronto) was the homebase for 13/21 decks.
Also to note, we introduced 3 tournament legal cards at the OverPower Championships.
Team Toronto - Team OverPower variant. Modified text slightly but effectively plays exactly the same as Team OverPower.
Toronto - Marvel Universe variant. Modified text slightly (+1 venture instead of -1 opponent's venture) but effectively plays exactly the same as Marvel Universe.
Toronto's Aspect - Excelsior variant. Modified text slightly but effectively plays the same as Excelsior. There are 8 cards to collect each featuring a player from Toronto. There is a total of 48 ever printed (6 each).
Good luck to everyone collecting! We will be holding contests to distribute the remaining promo cards.
Thanks Jack, looks like the shattered image advantage fades away more so every tournament since more and more people are playing any heroes now.
Hello all!!!
I really want to thank all participants in the Overpower Championships.
It was one of the funnest events I have attended. A little stressful, but well worth it.
It's been an amazing year and I look forward to seeing you all on the circuit next year.
I hope we can keep this momentum growing.
K2 is around the corner. Congratulations to Phil Keffer for winning the tournament and ending the year as #1 in the rankings. You may wanna frame that Keffer, you may not be there for long.
See you all next year and venture well.
Marcel

Jack: Are there some "(3)"s missing on the character lists? I don't see how the Beyond, Beast, Jubilee, Mr. Fantastic (R) team is legal otherwise.
It's actually beast:brute.
Thanks, Chuu. I wondered if that was the case as well.
Does anyone know the main strategy behind Andy's deck? Was is very defense heavy?
bamf! was doing the notation I was doing the notation hastily so there are a few corrections to make once I review the video.
ya, it was very defense heavy, Team mate avoid one attack, Acrobatics, team mate avoid 9 or less, Jubilee's confusion, negates and BeYonder's grid is 6-6-7-8 Good thing Andy didn't have to face any of the team running the no specials event.
Added the 3 new cards to the wiki now.
http://overpower.ca/wiki/OverPower_Championships_2014#Promotional_Cards
Pairings will be up this weekend, videos by the end of November.
yep, beast the brute and 3 stat jubilee
it initially wasn't designed around defense. I had 3 stat morph instead of jubilee. he brings more offense, and his power mimic opd. that way, I figured either I get the use of that wonderful special, or the ko event comes early...either way, I'm happy
I made an 11th hour change to jubilee though, as she brings a LOT more defense. figuring I was going to be playing mostly any hero teams (if I got off to a good start), her pure AD was one more defense against leech, which let me stay with more confidence in hands I didn't have a negate.
and chuu, I actually did have 2 matches against the no specials event (both against garion). he ended up going 5 ftw in hand 2 in our semifinal match. I actually drew a good hand for that round, but didn't place them, in hopes of him venturing big. I wasn't expecting 5 though, and luckily drew a game saving tw in my 3 cards, to go along with 8/7/5/4 power cards in hand
Guess you got lucky like I did against the no specials event. When that hit, first hand no less I had, 5,6,7,8 pcs and a-next in hand, opponent ventured 4 and I drew the any power teamwork and a 2e pc. Ended up killing his hulk and colossus that turn.
Pairings are tentatively up, still doing final adjustments to the format but the meat of the information is there now.

Thanks for letting me know. I didn't realize unusable power cards had to go to the dead pile. In retrospect, that makes a lot of sense.

Thanks for letting me know. I didn't realize unusable power cards had to go to the dead pile. In retrospect, that makes a lot of sense.
I didn't realize that either - I always put them to the Power Pack.
Is that only at the end of the game? What if I have something usable by my reserve but not by anyone else? Does that mean that those cards go to the DP when they come up?
As far as I know, it would be deemed unusable if at the time that you draw the power card, you longer have an active character that can play that power card. So even if you play a draw 3 during mid-battle and the last character that could play that power just died it would be deemed unsuable and discards into the deadpile and not the power pack. This is good since you don't want to be getting useless power cards while playing in power pack.
yup
once wolverine was lost
next battle any level 8 powercards go dead
unless you got another 8 grid in reserve (in that case you keep them)
So...to clarify - (and I apologize for those who are coming here for a thread about the OP Championships...)
Wolverine is in Reserve, he's got an 8F placed to him. None of my front line heroes have 8F. A SECOND 8F comes up, next hand, which is deemed unusable and must be discarded. Poor deck construction and planning aside, that SECOND 8F goes to the dead pile?
No, that second 8 does not get discarded into the deadpile as you might be able to use it again later when wolverine is out in front. So even if Wolverine never gets to come out because it's a back and forth venture game that gets to power pack you'll have to keep discarding those 8s into the power pack even though you don't want to.

such a bone-headed reneg
c'est la vie
Oh fortress...
I have a question about the penalty for the reneg in the finals: Why is the current ruling that if someone renegs when playing a draw 3 (by not discarding properly) that the game state get set back to the beginning of the battle as opposed to when the draw three was played?
When a reneg happens at the beginning of a battle (duplicates, unusables, etc), returning to the game state at the beginning of the battle seems reasonable. In this case, you want to return to the game state to just before the error happened (and then apply penalties). This make sense to me.
If someone renegs when using a draw three, the analogous thing to do would be to revert the game state to just before the draw three was played (since that's when the error happened). Instead, in the finals, the game state was reverted to the beginning of the battle. This is despite the fact that the error involved with the draw three had no impact on the game state up to the point before it was played. This doesn't make much sense to me. Because the error involved with the draw three had zero (literally zero) impact on what happened before that point, you are effectively returning the game to a point that has no relation with the error. An analogous situation for when someone renegs at the beginning of battle 3 would be to return the game state to the beginning of battle 2, which clearly would not make any sense.
Is there are reason for why the ruling works this way?
Edit:
Also, I found it odd that the players were allowed to revert the game state to just after placing occurred. This clearly favored the Spawn-S.Witch-Starjammers-Dr.S team. The reneg for the draw three effectively gave the opponent a draw 4 or 5 for the next battle (due to extra placed cards).
yeah, my thoughts regarding any 'advantage' gained because of the reneg mimic yours.
problem was, phil called for a judge so quick, there was no chance to explain this. the rule was quite clear, that once a judge is called, the ruling is out of the players' hands. the reneg rule was also quite clear, so at that point, I didn't even bother
about the placing for next hand: the rule was kinda fuzzy about that. I asked specifically about it at the start of the day, but no one else seemed to remember it. it was unclear about any cards placed that battle, and to be frank, at that point I didn't really care. losing 9 missions in one go late in a timed game is pretty hard to overcome
Didn't watch the game, but with the way what happened is being described, i have to agree with MHC. The current ruling is broken, and needs to be changed.
You crazy canuck's and all your stu[id renegs every tournament... MULTIPLE times. Just play the friggin' game straight!
