Title: The Hood
Post by: teesaw on December 08, 2014, 05:11:40 PM
Last week, when I published my Nova custom hero, I promised an equally fun to play villain.

When I was thinking about this card, I realized that my last few heroes seemed fun, but the mechanics seemed pretty plain.  I designed a pretty strong new mechanic, in Zombie Virus, that I think could be a lot of fun.

As always, please let me know how you guys feel about the card...too strong?  too weak?  too clunky?

Another unique character.  Cool!  Great art, as usual.
The Zombie special doesn't seem to far out there (without play testing it).  Does Zombie go to the Power pack, too?  (If so, dead card makes team pay for his crime.)  If he's in Reserve, not too many cards; if he's Front Line, makes him a bigger target.
Now the Avatar card - some questions...
Did you want the after effects to occur even if the card is avoided?  (Negated is no question.)  One would need to play this verrrry carefully.
Normally KL specials remove ROB/ROG Special cards (only).  Did you intend both teams to remove Aspects and Artifacts as well as Specials?  Much more terrifying if all cards, but also possibly more self-destructive.
With new mechanics, play testing usually answers all questions.
OP Lives!

As written, I think Zombie Virus cannot ressurect itself.  If The Hood is KO'd, the effect of the card immediately stops (it would be played face up on the table and remain on the table until removed from the game, since it's a FROG).  If it's negated, the effect stops before it's discarded, so it goes to the dead pile.  What do you think?  Does it need more clarification?

With regard to the 'double edged sword' factor - I agree.  It was by design that a dead hood might leave your team with 4 of his special cards in the power pack after he's dead.

I've been sitting at my keyboard trying to explain what situations this card works in for about five minutes, and based on that, I'm thinking maybe the mechanic needs to be refined.  The double KL idea is supposed to simultaneously (1) take down DoW (of course) and (2) take down Zombie Virus.  That, however, is not a strong enough downside for an FT (an FT should have a OPD attack effect on yourself) - I thought the AV (cannot attack or play specials FROB) was sort of played out, and didn't really work with the 'Avatar of Dormammu' idea.

I'm also thinking that maybe the Zombie Virus should include a draw 1 card every time you discard a The Hood Special in addition to the discard to the power pack.  I'm realizing now that I'm thinking about it, that card advantage is keeping cards in your hand, not keeping them out of the dead pile....

This character definitely needs some work - thanks again for the great feedback and keep it coming!

Maybe my brain is just fried -

The more I look at Zombie, the more I think it's fine as is.  You play the card on yourself, similar to Captain marvel's Speed Of Mercury.  The effect lasts as long as the card is in play.  If the Hood is KO'd, card is discarded to the dead pile (because the Hood is KO'd!).  It's best use might well be in Reserve to stock up on the AD specials for later.  Taking a chance still, but a valid downside for a powerful card.

For Avatar, based on your description, I would think an OPD KL would fit the bill.  KL = Opponent must discard all Special cards that affect ROB or ROG.  To balance the 12 multi attack, you have that team discards all cards (not so bad late in the hand, but neither is "may not attack ROB"), and the KL effects themselves as well.  I'm thinking if the discard was all Special cards, instead of all cards, and "If successful, " was added before "The Hood's team", the card would work well as an OPD KL.  If its avoided (e.g. straight avoid or teammate avoid, avoid numerical, avoid X icon, etc), the subsequent effect does not occur and the battle continues until its bloody end.

To quote one of my phavorite bands, and a New England company, "You can feel good, good about (the) Hood"!
