Title: Heralds of Galactus
Post by: justa on December 09, 2014, 08:32:03 PM
I wanted to "scale" the different Heralds of Galactus in comparison to each other.  (Ignoring the "What If" versions, as well as Dazzler and Human Torch (Invisible Boy), since they're already "in the game".  I'll leave them to someone else.)
From the legacy cards, Silver Surfer is a 21, though he's also been done at 22 and 23.  The others are non-legacy.  Terrax has been done by a few, and some of the others were made as a Character card with no Specials.  I won't include grids so as not to bias opinions.
These numbers below are from the Marvel Comics Database, based on a max value of 7, but need to be translated into OverPower, with a max value of 8.  (Notes: 1: All character have 7 in Speed except Destroyer Armor, who has a 5.  and 2: All characters have a 6 Durability except that Destroyer Armor and Stardust have a 7.)  So, in order, the 10 Heralds.

Name                           E    F    S    I
the Fallen One             6    3    6    2
Silver Surfer                 7    2    7    3
Air Walker                    7    4    7    3
Firelord                        6    3    5    4
Destroyer Armor          6    4    7    2
Terrax                          6    2    6    2
Nova (Frankie Raye)    6    2    5    2
Morg                            5    4    7    2
Red Shift                      6    3    4    2
Stardust                       6    2    7    3

Some of my thoughts....
1) Legacy Silver Surfer needs to at least transfer a point from Intellect to Strength.
2) Destroyer Armor should go to 1 Intellect with an Inherent Ability to combine with another character (not on team) to change Intellect rating (and possibly reduce Fighting rating) to combined characters rating (user can boost Intellect, but user is restricted by the armor from higher Fighting skill, and user cannot increase Fighting skill through use of armor).  This way it can be played alone, or "by" another character.  (Combination affects grid total for TDB.  (I'm still working out a text.)
3) Frankie Raye should have some connection with the Original Human Torch (Bios made Specials for him!).  She is Phineas Horton's daughter.
4) Stardust seems to need the highest grid total of all the Heralds.
5) Due to the Power Cosmic, all characters should be at least a 19 in total grid, but no higher than 23.

So, any thoughts in translating?  Anybody?  Grid totals, specific grids, whatever you've a mind to.  All opinions are welcome.

Surfer would be much more usable at 19 AND dual 7's!  I am not up on the heralds but may I suggest a Location Card to perhaps allow synergy or aspect card to help with lack of 8s?

Wow - awesome work.  Very cool concept.  I've been talking to Dr. Sleepless about the idea of themed expansions, and a series of heralds of Galactus hero cards could be a really cool concept.  Maybe something that interacts with the Galactus hero, or even a series of Clones/Variants that all share a single set of special cards.

My opinion, only since you asked, is that the game already has enough Energy heroes - I have in my notebook a heralds of Galactus hero card for a later set (not the current set that I'm working on) - it would be a "team" hero (which I've learned in set design, is just a lazy way to include as many characters as possible in as few cards as needed) and I didn't give it a grid, although i gave it the inherent "Counts as 14 points for Tournament Deckbuilding when used in a deck with Galactus."   which brings Galactus and his heralds to 41 points, which is comparable to a "normal" pair of heroes.

- Air Walker -
- Stardust -
- Silver Surfer (KL) - Silver Surfer as the one who foils the DoW
- Terrax - some kind of strength Attack
- The Power Cosmic (MF) - May play any power cards playable by target teammate FROG (Especially useful with Galactus in deck)
- The Fallen One (OPD) -

It would also be simple to pick one of the heralds to be a clone card ("may play any Heralds of Galactus special card"), and you've got 3/4 of your team right there.

I also found some great art that could be used for the hero card on deviantart - a guy named ESPENg...i think from Norway - should be a pretty easy Google.

http://marvel.com/universe/Silver_Surfer
http://marvel.wikia.com/Norrin_Radd_%28Earth-616%29

the marvel universe site differs slightly than the marvel wikia on each character for stats (i am not saying either are right or wrong, but you can gather stats from both sites, average them out, or take what you think would fit better for sum value in the overpower game world so they are usable/viable)

Silver Surfer 7-5-6-4 (of course this is also based on max 7, and to scale it out of 8 in overpower you would get 8-6-7-5)
if you went this way... i think you should go the Malebolgia innate way to lessen cost of character

Tussin - I'll have to look into the marvel wikia.  I don't care for just adding 1 to each stat, though.  26 is way to high for Surfer, and to nerf him (and others) seems wrong unless there's a good reason.  I guess I'll have weigh the wikia with the database with character knowledge to arrive at grids.

Teesaw - Another good idea!  However, I'll leave the Herald cards to you.  I was thinking on individual character cards with specials for each.  Understood that all of the characters would be primarily Energy/Strength,  but the idea was in the concept, not that the game needed it.  And I wanted to try to be true to the characters.  Most did have a life before and/or after Galactus, too.  A variant for Dazzler or Torch without Specials might be OK, with the character grid (& maybe IA) changing for the situation, but I hadn't planned on going that route (yet).
And since you mentioned it, the idea is based on a Galactus clone that I have - Galactus: Force of Nature 8287 (2 Fighting because, c'mon, Galactus has no moves that aren't Energy or Strength; 7 Intellect because for all his smarts, he still gets fooled plenty - he's no Doom or Reed Richards).  His IA: All Heralds of Galactus on team count for 17 for Tournament Deck Building.  Take that, Earth dwellers!

AO User - I seriously considered using the database stats as as to make the characters more usable!  But having Frankie Raye and Red Shift at 15 and Terrax at 16 doesn't sit right with me for some reason.  Plus Air Walker becomes the strongest herald?  As I said before, 19 seems to me to be the minimum for a character endowed with the Power Cosmic.

Thanks for the input, all.  Still hoping for some grid total/stats suggestions to scale the comparisons.

silver surfer
at 22 points seems pretty fair

Male is 25, but innate drops him to 23. if Surfer could drop to 23 or 24 with a similar innate it could work. and if you plan to make heralds cost 14 points with Galactus, we have a winner :)
Title: Re: Heralds of Galactus

Teesaw - I found (what I think is) a pretty cool picture of Heralds Of Galactus on comic vine.  Orientation makes it only good for a character card.  (Picture shows "Espen 2011" in lower right corner.

I went through Marvel wiki and was surprised at what I found.  6 of the Heralds DID NOT have any official stats!  What gives?  The site does have "Fan Ratings" though, which I found just as useful.  I think they tend to be a little overblown, but for scaling purposes they fit the bill.
I've come up with a scale that seems comfortable to me:
19 points:   Firelord & Frankie
20 points:   Fallen One & Red Shift
21 points:   Destroyer & Morg
22 points:   Air Walker & Terrax
23 points:   Surfer & Stardust
Now to come up with grids that make sense.  I'm thinking of keeping the "max 7" under the theory that Galactus is smart enough not to create a Herald that can equal him in anything.  IAs (for a few) and Specials (for all except Surfer and Terrax) will come later.  The trick to make the special effects varied enough so as not to copy each other or existing characters too much.

The Galactus Force Of Nature was sized to fit a standard team.  At 8287, he costs 25.  Subtract from 76 leaves 51.  51/3=17.  The idea was to build a team using Galactus and any 3 Heralds, while still being able to use each character in other situations.  Granted that the minimum team of Heralds would be a +6, while the max would be +16 (!), but I do it for fun (and because I've never seen anyone do some of these characters).  I've never been too "tournament minded", and the few cards I've actually made (on Microsoft Visio, as I'm Photoshop illiterate) are not of very good quality.  But think, two teams of Heralds (with Galactus FON) battling it out head to head!
Title: Re: Heralds of Galactus

Not a lot of input.  Guess there's not must interest.  But I thought I'd post what I came up with (at this point) to provide closure.
I ended up doing variants for Dazzler & Human Torch just for fun.
I gave up on the "max 7" grid plan.  The characters grids were too flat and similar when achieving the levels I wanted for each, so some got 8s.
I noticed that, when including homemade cards, there was absolutely NO overlap in the 24 unique specials I have for Silver Surfer, and 8 for Terrax.  So for Specials, just to challenge myself, I eliminated immediately all card codes AD, AE, AF, AG, AI, AL, AP, AQ, BI, BJ, BQ, CC, DB, DO, HF, JI, KL, LA, LM, NV, and OJ.  Also, no character got the same special code.  Hopefully you will find the characters unique.
I intentionally did not give any of them much defensive ability.  I didn't think it fit with theme of the group.
Again for the sake of the theme (and because both Silver Surfer and Terrax have them), I gave each a card name of "Herald Of Galactus" and "The Power Cosmic", except for the Fallen One (see Wiki for the difference).  With no further dithering, the list.

Please feel free to comment and suggest.  Eventually I hope to set up an account so that I can post cards, poor as the quality will be.  I know I prefer "seeing" them to "reading" them.

i am very excited by everyones new ideas for sets coming out, keep up the good work :)

Silver Surfer : Herald of Galactus 8-5-7-5 (25) IA: Counts as 23 points for tournament deckbuilding. May not use Energy power cards for defense.

i like how you did Surfer, i am just showing the Malebolgia style i had in mind :)

both are good, but one would need a little more help on the team defense side

After reading this all again, I had a few thoughts:

1) Would you post a link to the Heralds artwork you mentioned? I'd be happy to slap together a mockup of what they'd look like under your current edits in GIMP, and post it here. I'm a glutton for posting new cards here.

2) Would a Location such as "Galactus's Ship" be a possibility? It would have Galactus, his heralds, and if you really wanted there's a couple of other cosmic characters that would fit too. Not sure what it would actually do. Maybe a bonus to defense, or to teamwork cards used on defense?

3) I'd love to see an interaction built into the game (either as IA's or maybe in the Location/Battlesite) where if Galactus and any of his heralds are on the same team, they can defend for Galactus if he's attacked. Not only a flavor win, but since the big G is a pretty obvious target in the game (as he is in the Marvel U), the mechanics would actually reinforce the natural tendency to protect him.

4) Not sure what "Galactus Force of Nature" is, but I'm assuming it's a fan card I haven't seen yet. I won't lie, seeing the stats I'm not a huge fan. But then, I've always used the weakest/strongest characters to gauge what I think others are. So Galactus, being a cosmic being of unimaginable power (he literally gives away "The Power Cosmic"...) should be all-8's. Conversely, most Humans (like Nick Fury) should fall in the 17 point range (Intellect could potentially go as high as 7 or 8, but strength should cap about 2-3 and Energy should be capped about the same, fighting probably not ever going over 5). So I think 8-3-7-5 is very reasonable on Silver Surfer. I could see an argument to reducing him to 22 by shaving a point off of Intellect, but that's a minor point.

5) Viewed from a set-construction perspective, what else would you include here? My assumptions are the set begins with:

12 Characters
Fallen One: HOG
Silver Surfer: HOG
Airwalker: HOG
Firelord: HOG
Destroyer: HOG
Terrax: HOG
Dazzler: HOG
Nova: HOG
Morg: HOG
Red Shift: HOG
Human Torch: HOG
Stardust: HOG

48 new specials (6 each for 8 characters, by my count)

1 (or more) Location:
Galactus's Ship/Deep Space/Something to connect these characters

Universe: Teamwork:
some number greater than 0. I'd vote 4, 1 each for symmetry, or more.

Basic Universe:
Obligatory Power Cosmic reprint. Use new art.
Might also consider whether to do some objects (like Surfer's Board, Terrax's Axe, Firelord's Staff, etc) as Universe or as Artifact cards.

Artifacts:
See above

At this point you'd be looking at a 65 card *minimum* set. That's a little small, but well within what I'd define as a small OP expansion. With some of the legwork done (you've chosen specials and characters, assigned codes, etc) this actually wouldn't be too difficult to get moving towards potentially-printable status. As I said, I'd be happy to do mock-ups in GIMP for you (more practice in GIMP is never a bad thing, and you're right about preferring to see cards, I do too), but I don't have the time to devote to art selection for your projects as well as my own. Post/PM some links to art and indicate what card it should go with, and I can have these characters up here before Xmas.

Post by: justa on December 19, 2014, 09:31:01 PM
WOW, Dok!  You've taken my idea past where I had considered previously, but you make some good points.

1)skip for now

2&3) Certainly a location would be a possibility.  I see them as having no set base, though, outside of the Worldship.  Putting 13 characters on 1 Location might be a stretch (I've see 12), but separate versions could be made, i.e. team against Morg, team against Annihilation Wave, etc.  The Heralds defending Galactus is consistent with the comics, but it wouldn't work with what I've done.  I looked at them primarily from an offensive point of view, seeking out new planets for the master to consume.  I gave them very little in the line of defense outside of power cards.  I think the location would need to nerf them for serious consideration also because of the huge + in grid total.

4) Galactus FON was a card I came up with that was the start of my whole Heralds idea.  (I think teesaw's idea of a generic Herald is great, but I'll leave that to him.)  I wanted a way to have both the big guy, and at least 1 Herald on the team without breaking the bank.  (As I explained elsewhere, but for easy reference)  I felt the 2 Fighting was appropriate because he has little for fighting moves.  His attacks and defenses are Energy/Strength based, and his knowledge/strategy is Intellect.  He gets taken advantage of/beaten/captured enough that I felt characters like Doom, Richards, & Luthor should keep the point up in that stat.  Plus he has 21 unique specials (by others over the years, not me) to use that make him 3X a powerhouse even at that grid.  He costs 25 to use, which is 1 more than the legacy version.  The IA was the key to it all for me.  (76-25)/3 = 17.

5) I hadn't gone this far in my thought processes!  I was just trying to design some characters I liked but hadn't see made yet, and some specials for each, and to make it unique and somewhat real.  (My biggest fear was making them TOO powerful.)  I never even considered that this could be a "set", with all the extras you suggest.
Not sure what you're thinking of on the TWs.  I didn't put much team interaction into the specials, so if the location lets them use TWs, it might be an idea.  I definitely don't want to remake legacy cards, so I'd have to come up with a new wrinkle on them.
Nix on the basic U reprint per above, but the items you mention could make decent Artifact cards.  I'd want to come up with different mechanics than already exist for them as well, without going too far out of bounds.  (And by the way, I'm pretty sure it was Morg's axe first.  A Cosmic Axe could work as a compromise.)

and finally 1) I get most of my art from the "comic vine" picture galleries.  Nothing fancy or self-created.  Where my cards are for fun & self-gratification, I've haven't kept track of exactly "where" or "who" the pictures come from.  I copy them to a flash drive for use later.  Some of them are kinda crappy looking.  For example, I scraped the bottom of the barrel (for ones that I thought were even close to being able to use) to get the 7 pictures that I used for the Fallen One and Red Shift.  Not much there for the high-end card maker, but enough to satisfy the whims of this small time dabbler.

Being lazy (ain't retirement grand?) I haven't started an account yet to post pictures on line.  E-mail jpegs?  I don't know; my "point & click" skills only go so far.  I should have a preliminary copy of each completed soon.  Some have already changed from what's listed, as I'm finding duplications of effect and under/over powering.

Justa - Please don't mistake my lack of feedback for lack of interest.  I, too, prefer to "see" the cards rather than just read the set list.

I like your idea and the ingenuity, behind it.   I think the work here is fantastic, in terms of volume and concept.  I agree with Dok that you've definitely got a solid concept for a booster expansion, here.  My only preliminary comment here is that I have had trouble finding much synergy between each hero's specials - I'm reserving any sort of judgement until I can *see* the cards.

Also, in your set, it sounds like you're taking someone's Terrax cards as canon, which is awesome - can you share a link to those or somehow include them in what you're presenting here?

Please share any images you have, when you get them - I'll be looking forward to it!

I totally understand on the "seeing" vs "reading.  Me, too.  Eventually I be able to post pictures.  I sent Dok an e-mail with the cards I made in a word file (as I said, some cards changed since posting).  Not sure how it looked on the other end.

On the "set" line, I really had no plan of making it one.  Just some homemade cards for fun, and maybe get some input on ideas for the characters.

Regarding the lack of synergy,  I totally agree with you.  I stake no claim to game design ability, nor am I any kind of an expert gamer.   Justa havin' fun!  I don't make very many cards (not good at it), but I felt I had a hole in my collection.  Where I had 4 of 12 Heralds, why not have them all?  Then I chose Specials for them based on 1) my idea of the character, 2) the picture itself, and 3) not creating the same character 8 times.  No real "theme" to the mechanics of the Specials at all from a "set creation" point of view.  Another good reason to solicit opinions.

As to posting the Terrax cards I have, I'm afraid I definitely can't do that.  The forum has a policy of only posting your own pictures, or work of others with permission and credit given.  Being an amateur dabbler, I've never kept track of the source of all the cards I've found over the years, so I can't do it and follow policy.  Don't want Palatinus to boot me off the site!  (Heaven forbid!)

As far as taking the Terrax cards "as canon", I think you misunderstand my line of thinking.  I just have no desire to duplicate anyone's work, and didn't feel like giving Terrax or Surfer any more Specials.  8 was enough for Terrax.  Surfer has the 8 legacy cards + the marvels card and 15 other homemade cards.  Some of these would probably receive absolutely no support for any kind of Tournament play, but they are at least unique.  And I avoided them all with the 48 Specials I chose for my versions.  That's all it is.

Hope to be posting pictures in the near future.  I do OK by my own standards (I've seen worse), but its nothing like to work you guys have been doing.

The buzzer says "AAANNNN -  wrong answer!"  "justabgkid" is CCTelander (see member list for names) from near the middle of the US.  I am just "justa", which is actually short for "just-a big-L-O" (its a name-&-music thing) from the east coast.  (He suggested I sign up for this forum!)  Both names derive from the 10-character-restriction on screen names using AOL back in the days of dial-up.  (Remember dial-up?)  I thought there might be confusion on the name similarity, but he didn't think so.
Unlike me, he has ability at card/set design, and incorporated some mechanics from other games to expand on the "non-winning" strategies in legacy OP (e.g. burn cards, reveal, etc.).  I thought he had quite the vision for the game, and I'm hoping he can return to these pages and his own.

Meant to get back here sooner.

Justa's cards came through a little fuzzy, but they look good conceptually (good art selections/grids). I'm going to try and find his images this weekend and put his cards together in GIMP to post up here (no, I'm not hijacking Justa's cards. I offered to convert them to GIMP and he was on board... which, FYI: my .xcf files for any character I've done are available to anyone. Just send me a message. You'll have to ask Justa if you want the .xcf's for his characters when I'm done. I'm not handing out other people's files without their permission).

Anyway, I noticed the thing about incorporating strategies from other games, and just wanted to say I'm on board. It was thinking about other games that led me to a couple of mechanics I've incorporated so far (the Thanos non-OPD card that says "one per battle" was inspired by RAGE CCG [the battle mechanics in that game frequently involve drawing more cards mid-battle], Magic has inspired a couple more and always has me thinking about discard mechanics and hand information more frequently than I would otherwise). You should encourage "justabgkid" to find his way back here, Justa. The customs community seems very active here, another person would certainly be very helpful and welcome!

By all means, Dok, if you've got the time and the energy, go for it.  (I give formal permission, whatever.)  I will feel guilty that you're taking time away from your own projects, but would love to see them up.  I'm trying to get my daughter & her husband to teach me how to put up pictures, but they lead much busier lives than I do.  (Hence the time to come up with wacky ideas for cards.)  As I've said, almost all the pictures came off of "comic vine", either as .jpg or .png.  All are readily available, though some not the best of quality.  I do have them saved to a flash drive.  I can email some if requested, but only so-many will attach to a single e-mail.  Wish I knew more in the ways of computer, then I could do more.

On the strategies from other games - check out justabgkid's site in detail.  Besides the strategies that he put up, he was close (before he went dark) on the deception and venture strategies, and I think 1 other.  Many of the applicable cards are sown in to different characters, so as to see how they are to work.  Love new innovations.

A design note regarding the Heralds cards I sent:
I'm not really particular if the fonts are "traditional" or not, the idea was the thing (to get the characters "in-the-game").  I used light purple with pink shading on the Character card names and a darker purple with almost-red shading on the Special card Character names to give it a little more "Galactus" feel.  (Galactus, of course, did not get these colors, since he is these colors.)

I just wanted to be able to insert a card picture into a post.  The kid's schedule seems to have a slow-down after tomorrow, so maybe they'll have time then.  (It's not just the "where", it's the "how".  Never wanted or needed to before, so I never learned.)  I already have an account on pinterest, but I've heard negative feedback on that site from the forum, so I doubt I'll put them there.  Please be patient....I'll get into the 21st century eventually.  (Old dog, new tricks, yada yada, yada....)

I was looking over this old thread and thinking I should redo the work to post these cards (now that I can post).  But too much of the art was not worthy of posting (in my defense, it was my first attempt at creating cards), and I didn't want to do the work.

I did like teesaw's idea for a generic "Heralds" team-type character with specials on page 1 of this thread.  He seemed okay regarding me posting my own version.  He also suggested collaborating, but after sending him a list of what I had at the time, I never heard back from him.  (I've made some changes since then.)  I did use his idea of the art for the Character card, and the KL for the Surfer, but the rest are justa me having fun (and overdoing it, as usual).  I would never expect anyone to use ALL the Specials in a single deck, but there is a lot of room experimenting with combinations here.  (I took Dazzler off the list because hers was a What If? story.)

Heralds Of Galactus 7 4 6 3 IA: Counts as 17 points for deck building if Galactus is a teammate.
