Title: SCIENTIFIC PROGRESS GOES BOINK!
Post by: DoktorSleepless on December 10, 2014, 09:39:33 PM
I'm too excited to delay posting this.

The first successful foil reached the sealing stage (this has been a LOT of work to develop), and I want to show it off before I go back to practicing production with the rest of this print sheet. The card has a slight difference in thickness and width from a true OP card, but when sleeved is mostly indistinguishable. I don't know how the glue/sealing process will hold up to shuffling. I haven't tried this on specials etc yet, but I can't say I think they would last. Hopefully these pictures capture the fact that there's good clarity and semi-opacity to the card, but when moved in the light it shines from the foil layer behind the art. After I use the next art on my sheet for another practice construction, I'll be using the final art: teesaw's Magik, which I'll be sending to him as a thank you for providing the templates, fonts, etc that have made this possible (and for generally being a cool dude). Without further ado: Spider-Man: 2099 special holofoil.

I can't swear here, but HOW FREAKING COOL IS THAT?! It's not easy, so I won't be cranking them out, but I have a few more that absolutely have to happen. Requests will certainly be considered (be patient though, it took me weeks to develop one that was worth sharing... although hopefully the process will be much faster now that a lot of it has been worked out).

Well, I already showed these to the man teesaw himself, but feast your eyes on the prototype Magik I've gotten to Spider-Man's point of production.

These are flattering images, but there are still issues. I took a chance on image joining, and unfortunately the thing I did (or didn't do... it will all be made clear when I post my complete methodology up here in the next month) caused some between-layer air bubbling. I'm also not pleased with resolution, so I need to work on print settings (I THOUGHT I had it optimized for this print surface at highest quality and resolution... technology is so frustrating) and sizing (it printed proper width, slightly too short though...)

Whatever. Check this out.

Of course, this is just the prototype. But I hope to do an actual-factual run this weekend (I need to produce more blank OverPower-backed foils, which is by far the hardest and most time-consuming portion of the production process) and if I do I'll post results here before I mail off teesaw's actual Magik.

If anyone was wondering, Thanos looked AMAZING before my shaky hand sliced him in half last night while I was working. The background I put under him (which was from a Hubble photo) REALLY pops out and shines with the foil behind it (which makes Thanos stand out against it). I'll definitely post pictures of him when I finish one as well.

I have time to prepare new sheets while I get blanks ready. The initial sheet (Magik, Spider-Man:2099, Thanos) only needs a bit of adjustment on image heights, and if I can get it arranged right I might be able to fit a 4th character on that sheet. And I'd like to run at least one other sheet with different characters. One will probably be another 2099 character. But I haven't made any selections for the others (and my Moon Knight isn't ready for public viewing, let alone printing). So chime in with suggestions for which customs should get the foiling process, if your suggestion makes it on the print sheet, I may send you one for your collection!

EDIT:
Still waiting for materials in the mail. I cleaned off an MTG foil last night, and reapplied what I'd learned. Of course, using spray sealant outdoors in sub-zero temps, not a great idea. Does not come out and spray evenly, it speckles. Ah well.

I've combined my home print method with my home foil method, and the results are getting very good. The thickness is dead-on to an actual OP card. The flexibility is basically there. With the exception of the speckling from the sealant and the hand-cut edges and corners, this is what I was trying to achieve. In the light it shines and catches color, but not so much it's unrecognizable and/or unreadable. Hoping my mail stuff comes soon and I can produce several of these to make a better example post!

What kind of sealant are you using? I am using Krylon Crystal Clear Acrylic Coating Aerosol Spray. My cards looks nice but they still have a tacky feel and smell like chemicals afterwards. I am not making foil cards of course.
