Has anyone on here played Dice Masters? If so, is it good? How does it compare to Overpower?
i would also like to know the answer to this question as I recently picked up a starter pack and would like to know if I should take the time to learn the game which look complicated from the think instruction guide...lol.
I picked up a starter set and a few booster packs today. I'll let you know how it goes!
To me, it's way too complicated for what I hoped was a simple dice game I could play between rounds of Legendary. It's neat to have little collectibles, but for now, that's the only use I have for it.
Vs. is being relaunched next summer, if anyone's still interested in that.

we lost overpower for that!!!!
no man, we lost overpower to recharge....the worst game ever...lol.
Vs. isn't that bad actually, i played and collected for a couple years, got to the green lantern corps set and stopped due to getting back into video games at that time. It fizzled off a couple sets later though. I still have all my very rare cards still like savage beatdown and fizzle...i wonder if their worth anything if they've been reprinted and there are stronger cards now.

I'm always on the fringes of Vs., but it's my understanding that a lot of the early cards, especially Beatdown, are still very powerful and sought after. Fizzle might have gotten an erratum that weakened it, though.
That's another game that seems more complicated than it's worth, but I've put more effort into wrapping my head around it with the relaunch imminent, and I think I've got a better understanding now. Nu-Vs. is going to be in the style of of a living card game, so it'll be easier (and hopefully cheaper) to have what you need to effectively play.
I don't remember ReCharge popping up until 2003. Wasn't OverPower already a few years in the ground by then?
My heart just sank into my stomach hearing that VS was being rebooted, but Marvel wasn't willing to reboot Overpower because they believed it posed too much competition with the other projects they had lined up - chiefly Legendary.
Can you post a link to the announcement/news release of the VS relaunch? I'd be interested to know when that decision was made.
From the standpoint of game design, I think VS stinks - just throwing that out there.

Did you hear this from someone official or are you speculating? If Vs. isn't competition for Legendary, I don't understand how OverPower would be.
Upper Deck announced the relaunch at GenCon this year. Well, they put a bunch of old cards in a box and sold them off as a "Preview" set, to see what interest was like. Apparently it was high enough that they claim they'll have something for a GenCon release next year.
QuoteUpper Deck's first official VS release will launch at Gen Con 2015!

This was direct from Marvel in February.
Do you have a link to that? I follow Marvel game stuff pretty closely but somehow missed that one.
It was via email.
To give some context, we spoke about the royalty/license requirements, and how it would be bad business to turn around and offer a competitive license to someone other than Upper Deck, without changing UD's required minimums, since the market for CCGs is so narrow (not like t-shirt companies or toy companies).
I was talking to my wife about this, and it dawned on me that if UD is doing Vs. and Legendary - they're probably able to spread the minimum between the two properties.

hope that helps.
Thank you.
It's a real shame...it looks like any hope of seeing Overpower back on store shelves is at least 5 years away.
I must admit, I've been slightly down since hearing this news last week.
I'll always have a soft spot for OverPower, it being the only Marvel card game through my teenage years, but I maintain a reboot would have to drastically overhaul it to be relevant. It's crazy to me that half the cards (Basic universe, doubleshot, etc.) are all but useless. There's no sense of progression, as you can play a level 8 power card on turn 1, if you're so lucky. And yeah, Battlesites were probably a bad idea.
Unpopular thoughts, to be sure! I'd love to see OP come back, but only if it's better than it was.
Agreed - the useless cards are just that - useless. There's definitely a need for a rules overhaul, as well as the creation of a revised format that lends itself to draft play, even if that's not the way that tournaments are played.
I've never disliked the 'progression' because I think of it more like hands of poker than a game of MTG, and I think battlesites were probably a short-sighted attempt to make the 99% of your collection (the part that isn't your deck) somewhat useful. The modern way to do that is just to roll outdated cards from past releases off the "legal" list for constructed play, and reprint the ones you care to keep. A constantly-rotating set of 40 characters or so would make much more sense than the seemingly infinite pool of several hundred that we currently have.
I've got some ideas for this, but they're going to have to wait until VS 2.0 fizzles out...
I like the cut of your jib, teesaw. Definitely need to keep popular characters current, and I'd like to think Marvels would have been a start to that.
And yes, drafting! I've thought about that, too, if they were to stick with a TCG (which is kind of out of vogue right now). Maybe make sure that each pack has one character with a couple associated specials. Tell people to bring their own power cards and make up the rest of the deck after busting packs.

I'll have to sit down and go through all your stuff at once one day. I've got (bad) ideas of my own that I should write down, too!
About Dice Masters.. I received a starter set for Christmas and 3 of my friends and I decided to try it out.
It's similar to any of the deck building games (DC, Legendary) but the battles are more like Magic the Gathering, as each die (when fielded) has an attack and a defense stat and you have health points. If a die gets though to damage the enemy, it goes back into your dice bag. If it gets blocked or is blocked and dies, it gets re-rolled next turn in addition to your standard dice draw.
Each character has a few different cards (with different rarities) but they all use the same type of die, and only 1 of a character's card can be on your team. Each character also has a max number of dies per card (which you decide when you set up your deck - i think 15 dice mixed between your 8 characters). Those dice are now available for you to buy during the game. There are also 4 shared die with special abilities you can buy.
It was really fun. We ended up playing two headed dragon with each person having teams of 6 characters, which worked really well.
I also liked that the boosters are only 1 $ each (2 cards and 2 dice) , so its easy to pick up a few and open some packs for fun. (Though because if the dice, I found that the cards are usually a bit warped in the packs :)
I ended up getting about 50 boosters, the other starter set and I also picked up a Collectors Set Up Box because it can hold over 300 dice (which you will end up having if you enjoy the game).
At first you will think you want more die, but its the rare cards that are the hard items to get. Super Rare cards though are really rare (like 1 per booster box of 90 boosters).
TL;DR It was really fun and its worth a shot IMO. The fact that you can build you own deck pool, plus the fighting mechanic leading to a lot of diversity and strategy is what makes it better than the fixed deck building board games IMO.
Hope this helps, Let me know if you have more questions :)

Your estimation of the game helps a lot! I picked up an Uncanny X-Men starter and tried it out today. Took running through the example game to really understand it, and even at that I think I have to spend some more time with the rules to really get all the little bits of it.
I too like that the boosters are so inexpensive ($1.25 in Canada), which makes it all the more desirable to keep going...
A buddy and I picked up just the starter set, after a few games and getting it down, Dice Masters is actually a quick 10-15 minute game that is easily played. It just takes a few games to get the rules all smashed out. Best of luck.
