Title: X-Men OverPower - Garbage Set?
Post by: Wolverine1 on December 26, 2014, 02:29:34 AM
Hello All,
I stopped buying OverPower after getting away from superhero comics back in the day, shortly after Classic was released. I recently looked at my old cards and now am getting interested in again. I bought Classic, but no X-Men.

Now that I am reviewing the set I am not surprised OP died. Is there a general consensus that the X-Men set was the worst one of all? I am blown away by the prices on eBay. Some points I'd like to make about why I think this is a poor set compared to the rest:

1) Aspect cards. Introducing a new card type... AGAIN. How many other CCGs do this?

2) Font change. Why did they change the fonts on the hero cards and the locations? I LOVED the old font and the new one is garbage.

3) Characters that no one cares about. Landslide? Sabra? Xaos?? Who are these people? Maybe I would know if I didn't stop reading the comics, but I can't seem to find much info on these rejects online either. It boggles the mind that they have character cards but classic X-Men villains like Pyro and The Toad don't. Actually it just seems like they were trying to promote some cheeseball characters that some hack-writer thought up that lasted only a few issues.

4) Wretched art. Okay, this is where you can tell they just said screw it and tossed in the towel. One of the things that originally got me so excited about OP was the cool artwork. The original artwork for the first three sets, and the IQ hero cards was very distinct and nothing like you would usually see in the comics. The art started slipping on IQ but X-Men is just recycled old art that looks like it was scanned from the actual printed comic issues. Look at the art on the Princess Bar location. How does that even happen?

Anyway, I love this game and I am grateful to have found this forum.

I would say that at least 80% of the xmen set is bad but there are some really good cards that are essential to decks, most notably Dow, a-next, and x-man...

The X-Men expansion was released following the bankruptcy in the late 90's and was managed by a different group. That's why everything feels different about the set.

They definitely lost all of the .ttf files...

I don't understand. What are .tff files? The files that contained the fonts?

Yes.  The files that contain all of the fonts.  I'm going to tell you a crazy sounding story, and then when it's done, I'm going to tell you that it's made up.

When overpower ran out of money the first time, they got rid of all the servers and all the computers, and the graphic design team sort of went their separate ways.  When the new design team did the layouts for the new set of hero cards and specials, they didnt have the files on their computers, so they just used Arial Black or something, just as a placeholder font, with the intention of going back and reskinning the whole thing before they went to print.  By sheer accident, some dummy sent the cards off to print (probably the same dummy who looked at Neuro-Toxin and went 'yeah, that's probably the clearest picture of Angel we're going to be able to find'), without actually updating those fonts, and hence, Overpower: X-Men was born.

That story was made up for entertainment purposes only, but I wouldn't doubt if it was at least partly true.

That story might actually be less crazy than what probably actually happened.

i agree with you about the fonts.

the characters taking a downfall was inevitable.  they were approaching, what, 200 characters?  had to start scraping the bottom

I think the art is better in this set than the first 3 sets.  iq is where it seemed to level up in the art.  using fuzzy comic panels was pretty weak though...

I LOVE the idea of aspects.  more power to homebases, and more variety to the game

the set did, however, introduce DoW,  which as I've stated in the past, is just a bad card for the overall health of the game

Clearly they weren't graphics people who worked on the cards. Black on dark green for aspects? Ugh.

Yes, it's inevitable but they weren't there yet. They started scraping the bottom of the barrel while there was still some left closer to the top. There are a bunch of characters that actually had history in the Marvel Universe that didn't make it to OP. Moon Knight doesn't have a character card. Moon Knight for Pete's sake!!!
