Title: The Doctor
Post by: adamsonofwilliam on January 03, 2015, 11:32:12 PM
I would never claim to be a customizer... not at this point especially.  However, I've been very inspired by all the extremely well-done custom work here and have started playing around myself.  I put these together for my own use more than anything, testing out the formats and whatnot.

Take a peek at the lot if you're interested.  Feedback is appreciated, but as I said, these were really just for fun and something I thought would be fun to play with (and hopefully beat the kids I play with!)

I really enjoy the characters from the Amalgam Universe.  I just wish there were better solo pics of more of them.

Had to make more to correspond with BartHillDaredevil's 3 custom heroes:

I really like the idea of having the originals and the Amalgam version on a team together!

I absolutely LOVE the Doctor!  I've been watching it since I was a little kid in the 60's.  While I can't envision him in the worlds of the X-Men or the Lantern Corps (e.g. I couldn't see using him in a game because he never really loses in the end), I do think the cards are great.
That being said, my love of the show demands I make some comments on the cards...

Patrick Troughton was the 1st Doctor that I remember seeing, yet he's conspicuously missing from the character card.  (Is that Jon Pertwie under the S & I icons?)

I would most definitely give him an 8 Intellect!  F & S are good where they are.  Energy is hard to pinpoint for him.  While he has little for Energy in the comic-book sense, his regeneration ability and the sonic screwdriver give an equivalent energy.  I'm OK at 6 here, though it'd be pretty easy to convince me of any number for it.  You have him at 19 total grid, & changing I from 7 to 8 makes it 20.  Even that seems a little low, but maybe its just that I'm a big fan.

The regeneration aspect is way undersold here.  His JB should be non-OPD.  (Different from everybody else, granted, but his ability deserves it.)   A different way of approaching it would be to allow him the Regeneration special ability as an IA (can do it whenever), and move the anti-KO IA to a special card.

I'm not really comfortable with the numerical attack specials, but its the only way to translate how he "goes after" the current antagonist.  As many cards as he has, he could use more of the "trick" variety, so that the the opponent's options are even more limited.  Things such as preventing use of an icon, forcing actions, creating penalties for certain actions, etc.  He defeats his opponents more by rendering them harmless, or removing the people in danger from them; much more so that he actually kills opponents.

And lastly, I feel you have short-changed the franchise by limiting the pictures to the 3 Doctor's from the Day Of The Doctor special (not counting the character card).  The show has such a long (& great) history, I hate seeing it limited to just the latest incarnation of the series.

Please don't take these as negative comments.  I really like the cards and you did a good job in fleshing out the specials to fit the character.  I fact, I plan on printing out your cards and adding the to the Doctor Who card set collection I still have from back when the show 1st got cancelled (after Sylvester McCoy, 7th Doctor).

Trivia:  Did you know?....  The daughter of Peter Davidson (5th Doctor) is married to David Tennant (10th Doctor).

Extra:  What grid total are you placing Mimic at?  I'm assuming the "infinity" in the 3 grids functions as Beyonder's grid.

Not negative at all, and thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Two of the Doctors got cut out on the Character card only because of the dimensions of the pictures I was able to find.  Wanted to find one that had them all on it, but so many are very wide and not very tall... this was the best I could do.  I had thought of making a card per Doctor, but imagined they'd all have the same stats anyway so not as much point.

Similar was the reason for images from the last three rather than the whole.  I joined the show in the most recent incarnations (Eccleston) and have tried to watch as much of the previous as possible, but with the card titles I had in mind it all seemed to work with the most recent characters.  I would like to continue, but I might end up making a whole deck out of possible Specials...

That was my thinking for him.  Everything could be manipulated except for the Intellect.

So, totally variable grid for Mimic.  His teammates dictate his value?  Realistic, but hard to build with.  I'll have to give that 1 some more thought.

On the Doctor - (if you can find the pictures...)
With what you have to start, you could just add them as specials.  (Maybe swap out some of the other pictures.)  William Hartnell (played by Richard Hurndell in the 5 Doctors episode), Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwie, Tom Baker, Peter Davidson, Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy, Paul McGann (played by John Hurt in Day Of The Doctors), Christopher Eckleston, David Tennant, Mat Smith, and now Peter Capaldi.  Each could have some angle to twist the battle in their own style.  Teammate protection is also needed, as he keeps his companions safe as much or more than he uses them as bait.  They go into danger anyways just be traveling with him (read: being on his team), and he wants to keep them around.  Then with all the other companions over the years, and the gallery of different villains (wish they included more of them in the current series), you could probably use up every non-numerical Special code ever created with extra slop over.  I could well see an entire deck here, with room to add more as future incarnations are created!  Maybe even a set out of it, if you wanted to do things like companions, U.N.I.T., Tardis, & friendly races for his teammates, and the Master, the Rani, Solon, & unfriendly races (imagine the fun with Dalek & Cybermen!) as Opponents, all with their own specials.
Could be a never ending project!  Now that he has unlimited regeneration, "Who"'s to say?

I did want to do the Daleks for sure.  Other enemies make sense as well and there are so many you really could make a whole set out of it.  I'll keep all these things in mind and play around with it over the next while.  had a lot of time on holidays which come to an end today, so the production speed might slow down.

You do have a good point with the "not as bait" aspect... the Companions AC made sense at the time, but it should really be a "Teammate may avoid an attack".

Both type specials would be appropriate depending on the situation.
If you decide to continue with it and want some suggestions, I've got some history I can share.

I would very much welcome any sort of help from pre-current-era information.

Characters I can think of making starting off with:
The Doctor (one for each version with the same numbers but maybe different IA?)
A handful of Companions
K-9
Jack Harkness
U.N.I.T
River Song
Madame Vastra and Jenny Flint
Daleks
Cybermen
The Master
Tribbles... no, wait...
Weeping Angels
Headless Monks

This would start from where I know, but I would like to branch out.
Might need help with the numbers.  Will definitely post possibles before moving onto the cards.

Pre-current info?  I got it.  Time is not a concern for me (not that I time-travel, of course).  If these cards never get made, its still fun considering the possibilities.  I'm not much of a game- or set-designer, but I know Doctor Who.
I'm working up a series of idea lists for pre-current consideration.  I'm sure it will be too much information in some ways, but not enough in others.  When/if you decide how you want to approach the project further, I can provide more wherever I'm able.  So far I'm breaking it down to Companions &other Allies, Time Lords, Villains, and common or key things like objects and "moves".  I can either post or e-mail them at your preference.
The character is so different from actor to actor, not just in looks but in personality and tendencies, that it seems a shame to just have the 1 character card.  Multiple Doctors have appeared in the same episode; not frequently, but enough to make the possibility realistic.  While I agree that the Doctor's stats shouldn't necessarily vary between incarnations, the IA I suggested probably shouldn't either.  (Although maybe he should change character cards when he uses it.  Dual IAs on a level 8 character?  I could live with that for the sake of the Doctor!)  But otherwise I could see an alternate IA for different versions.  This is one case where a level 8 character DESERVES an IA!  (Even 2!)  How you choose to implement it is up to you.

An update on the Doctor project:

justa has been feeding me all sorts of GREAT information and history as we've been putting a Whoverpower set together.  The link below will get you to all the current Character cards, complete with pics, grids and IA's.  Hard to find some workable pics for some of the older characters, but did the best I could: http://adamsonofwilliam.deviantart.com/gallery/52894508/Doctor-Who-Overpower

Wow!  They look great.  Amazing, in a way, that you could find color pictures for some of them!  (They didn't broadcast in color until the 3rd.)
If you haven't already, check out the follow-up I sent on IAs and special tweaks.  I thought it improved some of the characters; you DO have final say either way.
CAN'T WAIT to see the specials as they're added.  Great work!  Glad I could help.
Did you forget People Of Earth?  They're still on Jamie's IA.

Looks GREAT, adam. The only glitches I see are 1) Doctor - No More! still needs OPD,  2) Master - Hypnotic Stare needs OPD (I missed it 1st time), and 3) for Omega, "Founding" Time Lord should be OPD, not "Insane".
A thrill to see them up!  (for me, anyways)

I had great fun helping adam with his cards, and being a big Doctor Who fan, I decide to keep going where he left off while he went off on other projects.  So far, I've added 1 additional Special for each character that he did, plus many more for The Doctor.  (It IS all about him!)  I've also added Teamwork cards.  Power cards & Universe cards will be part of the Additions set & will come later (hopefully).  For now, these are all posted here: http://justaopfan.deviantart.com/gallery/53887226/Doctor-WhOverPower.
Late I will be adding 2 other Expansion sets:  Companions & Allies (24 characters with 4 Specials each), and Villains & Tweeners (24 characters with 4 Specials each).
I hope you enjoy!

Thanks for noticing!
i also appreciate your comments on the cards on deviantart.  it's nice to know someone else is enjoying them in some fashion.

The Villains & Tweeners Expansion is also posted.  (busy morning)  http://justaopfan.deviantart.com/gallery/53951843/Villains-and-Tweeners-Expansion  Hope you enjoy.

At some point in the future, I hope to add the Universe cards & Power cards to the original expansion.  I've intentionally left the power cards for last, so I don't use up a picture that was good for something else.
On the Universe cards, I have a decided on a new mechanic for them to make them more attractive to use, and fit in with "this version of the game"'s lower grid levels.  (Since there's not a lot of other type cards to fill out a deck, they'll be needed.)  I just need to decide on a method of presentation that will "work" (be semi-realistic for the show) for all characters, so I can pick out pictures & put them together.  (Been toying with the idea for a few months, but I still haven't gotten there yet!)
