Title: Toronto Meet up #4: Casual fun
Post by: BigBadHarve on May 24, 2011, 01:10:24 PM
Hello all!

We have set our day for the next Toronto meet up. It will be on Saturday, June 18th.

I'm still finalizing the space, but aiming for downtown. I'll update later with the address info once it's locked, but June 18th is the day.

The meet up will be casual, come play, trade and have fun.

Jack and I are working on the details for the August event, which will be another tournament. Prizing and rules/theme information will be forthcoming. August 20th is the day, and we're looking at a comic shop owned and operated by a former player who's interested in joining us! Always a bonus.

Cool! Aug 20 might actually be far enough in advance for me to convince my posse to join!

Tentative prize for August is a Holo character. Nothing confirmed yet.

So let me get this straight. In Canada you get universal health care and OverPower tournaments??? Not fair, man, not fair.  :'(

Well, Canada is a big place, so not ALL of us get to go to the Overpower tournaments.

We've confirmed our location for the June 18th meet up as well as our August Tournament.

Heroes World

8601 Warden Avenue (North-East Corner of Hwy #7 & Warden)
Markham Town Square Plaza
Markham, Ontario
L3R 0B5

The Owner is a former Overpower player and is quite happy to see a resurgence in the game.

We'll be sharing the space with a Magic tournament, but soon they will learn why OverPower is mighty!  ;)

Heroes World also wants to host our upcoming August 20th Tournament. Official details aren't confirmed yet, but here's what it's shaping up to be:

Standard constructed deck using Legion (official) rules. 'Marvels' will be allowed, as will certain proxies for extremely rare cards. A full list yet to be determined.

Jack is offering the prizing this time so it's his choice of rules and format. He's said that it will likely be a Ra's Al Ghul Holo Hero for first prize, with additional prizing based on attendance. (He mentioned a potential Assault on Onslaught Mission set as well) None of that is 100% confirmed yet, but I'm just offering a preview. Once we are locked for date and Jack has confirmed the exact prizing, I'll put out the official notice.

I will also likely do another Giveaway/Pool for those who can't attend. MegaPowers, or another Promo bundle again. TBC.

Cheers all!

I really want to be able to get to that August Tournament! it'd be so much fun! It just seems so cost-prohibitive for me to get all the way out there, even if I carpool with a few others.  :'(

Post Merge: July 14, 2011, 01:44:02 PM

The cost of booking a flight from Sacramento to Toronto, right now, for August, is $700+
when you count the cost of driving to and from Sacramento from Redding, you're adding almost another $100.
If I drove the extra bit to S.F. to fly, it drops the ticket price closer to $600, but I'm adding another $100 for the drive.

If I drove from here to Toronto, it would cost me about $750 in gas (depending on exact mileage and prices along the way, of course).

I'm not saying I will, but it seems like driving would be the best option, especially if I can split the cost 2 or 3 ways...

What about flying out to Detroit and getting a rental car for the last leg of the trip?

Apparently flights to Buffalo are really cheap, and Buffalo is only a two hour drive from Toronto.

We'd love to have you guys out with us, but don't break the bank just to come play some cards.

If you do come, hopefully you can make a good vacation of it. Toronto has tons to offer tourism-wise. The Art Gallery of Ontario, Royal Ontario Museum, Hockey Hall of fame, CN Tower, as well the Canadian National Exhibition will be running at that time. And There's Canada's Wonderland if you like amusement parks.

Take in the sites as well as compete in the card tournament. Of course, while you're here we'd make sure to hook up for some casual games.

Another possibility is this - Bios has mentioned that he might come up to Toronto on Vacation next Spring. Possible, but not confirmed. If that happens, what I'll do is schedule a tournament around his visit so he can join in, and if you guys want to come and plan ahead too, we'll make it a two day affair. Sort of like the OP Cup Held in St. Catharine's the year OP died. Multiple theme tournaments as well as a big tournament with a juicy prize. Something like that. Really make the trip worthwhile.

Thoughts?

One rule I'm putting in place for the August tournament is that you can only use Avenger's ID or the 6 Any Power teamwork IF you let me scan it first.

Like I said guys, Bios may come next May. With a little co-ordination, we can plan the event around a visit from all of you. Hopefully even lure in some of the others who are within a day's drive of Toronto. Palatinus and Hot Dog Cart have expressed a possible interest in visiting. DaGreatNameless isn't far either. The Orange King and his son have said they hope to come to our tournaments as much as possible. (Being in Buffalo, they're only a 2 hour drive) So I'm sure they'd be down with that. Especially if we could get a tournament weekend with 30-40 people!

An Overpower 2012 spring fling. Could be fun!

Larry mentioned back at the last meetup that Doug Simms is doing some kinda thanksgiving meet (in Ohio).  Maybe that would be a good middle ground?  I don't know any fine details though.

Per Mapquest (not the best source, I know) there is only a 5 hour difference between driving from Redding, CA to Toronto (39hrs 43mn) and driving from Redding, CA to Cincinnati, OH (34hrs 59min)

Hey BBH.  Just wanted to let you know that I am 100% in for next weekends meetup.  Are we allowing the use of proxies for mega rares?  and Marvels?  or is it actual cards only?
Title: Re: Toronto Meet up #4: Casual fun
Post by: Jack on June 12, 2011, 11:02:27 AM
I don't think we care what cards you proxy for casual meetups, though try to keep it sensible (don't print out all 50+ cards in your deck, per se). For tournaments, we'll have a fixed list of allowed proxies. I'll work with BBH on Saturday to narrow down that list to about Marvels + ~10 to 20 cards.

A list is a good idea as long as you take rarity, cost, and general usefulness into consideration.

Some cards are rare like the Onslaught promos, but don't cost a lot.

Some cards like the Phoenix 11 are rare, costly, and not very useful.

Well, the proxy list would be comprised of cards that every deck can make use of. Some Any Heroes, Beyonder, A-Next, 5 Multi would be on the list for sure. I don't want to specify character specific cards or heroes except for Malebolgia.

I've pretty much finished my dads deck, so I'm just at the mercy of the "Powers That Be" for a deck to run.

And yeah, he said you wanted a Hideout Discovered?  I don't know how many you need but I think I've still got 6 or 7.

Yeah, it was a good day! Lots of new faces. Caught me off guard! The owner of the store had invited a whole ton of people, there was a bit of an OverPower Frenzy. We took over the back room - the Magic meet that was supposed to happen was completely dwarfed and after an hour or so vanished entirely. Someone at the store took and posted photos on the store's site:

http://heroes-world.com/?p=498

Jack's pictures and videos should be ready shortly.

We've had to switch the day of the August tournament to August 27th... more details to come shortly.

Nice job on the uploads. I'm sure it takes a fair amount of work to compile the video and everything, and all that effort is appreciated. I haven't watched everything yet, but here are a few things off the top of my head:

-You don't have to reveal what you get with Webhead
-Powerpack and Dead Pile are not common knowledge, so you can't look through them at any time
-In your game vs BBH he bet three for the win and you didn't draw a card

I look forward to watching the rest of the stuff later. Looks like there are a lot of decks running Fatal Attractions, regardless of the archetype - yikes! I don't recall seeing Matt P. from your last event, is he Oscorp or some other newcomer?

I must've had missed how many he ventured that battle. I would never consciously NOT draw cards if it's for the win. Hopefully another set of videos to be posted, though probably without sound. We'll see how badly they came up.

It's interesting reviewing the footage. I see so many boneheaded moves that don't even occur to you in the moment. Such is the fun of the game.

The web-head thing is sort of a player's etiquette we (well, some of us) follow - to reveal the chosen card as proof that it's not something forbidden (aka: Another any hero.) Technically, it's not in the rules, but Hot Rod and Pass the Gestalt introduced the idea, I think it's a good one. Especially getting into tournament situations again. In casual situations it's not such a big deal, but once you're in the habit....

Yeah, the power pack/dead pile thing. I don't mind so much when we're playing casually, but for tournaments 100% - no looky looky.

QuoteThe web-head thing is sort of a player's etiquette we (well, some of us) follow - to reveal the chosen card as proof that it's not something forbidden (aka: Another any hero.)

Why would it be necessary to reveal as proof that you didn't retrieve an Any Hero? It would be evident that there was cheating involved as soon as they played something that you had seen played/discarded earlier. For DS specials it's a good rule to implement, but it makes no sense for Webhead.

Also thanks for reminding everyone to "wave hi to Onslaught and Dr. Douche," glad to know that I'm on your mind.

3 more videos will be up by the end of the week. No sound though since I had to recover them, they videos might also look funky too. Oh, and there is minimal glare in these.

Weather is not cooperating this week; I can't encode the videos if its too hot.
