Hello Everyone! We've locked in our day for the August Tournament, which will be on August 27th.
Still trying to confirm our location, though. We have a spot that looks like it's good to go, I just need final confirmation. I will post that once it's 100%
This time around is Jack's baby, so he's offering the prizes (Ra's Al Ghul Holo hero and Assault on Onslaught Mission set are the top confirmed prizes)
We'll be playing by official (Legion) rules this time around, WITH Marvels.
As before, there'll be a hotseat to record some of the matches, as well as the finals. And I'll be doing another Player pool giveaway here on the forum, for those of you who can't be here for the fun. I'll post all that once I have at least 8 confirmed players.
Cheers!
-BBH
UPDATE!!!
We'll be playing at Dueling Grounds in Toronto, located at 1193 Bloor Street West (Bloor St W and Brock St). We'll start the tournament at about 1PM but we'll be doing registration from 12PM onwards.
The entry fee for the tournament is $10 per person to cover the costs of the prizes (more on that in a bit). You can either pay Jack in person or via Paypal (pay@jacktruong.ca). The entry gift for this tournament is Spawn's Finite Power (Correct Cut) and a print out of the Any Power Teamwork.
We will be using the Official OverPower Legion rules with no modifications except:
1) "Lost" Classic Promotional cards are allowed to be used.
2) The Marvels Expansion is allowed, if you need to print some out, check out http://files.overpower.ca/homemades/super_high_qual_marvels.zip
2) Proxies are allowed for all cards (including lost promos and Marvels) provided they are an exact representation of the real thing. I (Jack) can provide you with proxies if you ask me ahead of time (before the 24th). Colour ones are preferred but black and whites are acceptable too.
In each round, time will be called after 25 minutes. You are to finish your current battle and proceed to play one FINAL battle. The winner is then determined by [Number of missions in Completed] - [Number of missions in Defeated]. If that calculation is tied, then the winner will be determined by: [Number of Characters alive], [Total of Current + Permanent record] in that order. If it's still tied, we'll figure something out.
We will play 4 rounds of Swiss to determine the top 8. At each round, you will be paired up with another player with a similar win-loss record. The first round will be randomly paired.
The top 8 will be seeded into elimination brackets based on record.
In the first round, seed 1 plays seed 8, 2 plays 7, 3 plays 6, and 4 plays 5.
In the second round, the winner of [1 vs 8] plays winner of [2 vs 7]; winner of [3 vs 6] plays winner of [4 vs 5].
In the final round, the two winners will face each other for 1st and 2nd prize. If there are more than 16 people, the two losers will face each other for 3rd prize (and 4th prize if any).
Prizes:
1st place gets a choice of:
Ra's Al Ghul Holographic Promo Card
OR
Assault on Onslaught Promo Missions
2nd place gets the remaining.
If there are 16+ people:
Assault on Onslaught Promo Missions gets upgraded to AoO Missions + Events. Ra's Al Ghul is still the lone card.
3rd place gets Adam Warlock Promo Hero + Adam Warlock toy
If there are 20+ people:
3rd place gets a Mr. Fantastic IQ Hero and a choice of:
Adam Warlock Promo Hero + Adam Warlock toy
OR
Adam Warlock Soul Gem Promo Card + Wolverine toy
4th place gets the remaining.
There will be two cameras recording the matches, please let me know if you do not wish to be recorded. There will also be pictures taken, again, let me know if you do not wish have your picture online.
There will also be two OverPower t-shirts given away.
There will be some colour prints of Devourer of Worlds and Beyonder given at registration if needed. I cannot guarantee there will be print outs of Marvels but if you ask me the week before, I can get them done.
I'm mostly doing this because I want to get better videos, slips of paper does not show well on video.
geez...everybody hates my cheap ass proxies :(

I traded that stack away a long time ago. I only have 1 left now. :'(
Looks like I can't make it to the Tourney, or any future Toronto meet ups. I'm packing my bags and heading west, we leave the weekend before the scheduled date.
This is lucky news for all of you who are still going, seeing as how I was gonna cause some serious damage with my super awesome killer deck.
Good luck to all. And I will definitely be in on the pick a winner pool.

I thought the videos were great except for that glare on the center front line characters.

Agreed, I'm not a lighting expert so I had no idea how I could go and fix it with the material I had on hand. I'll probably spend sometime to tweak things before recording the next batches of videos.

Probably won't get rid of glare, as long as people are using sleeves. Of course, I'm not recommending playing without sleeves.... but that's how it is.
Updates:
So far, confirmed attendance is as follows:
Myself
Jack
Matt G.
Ted C.
Bamf!
Pass the Gestalt
Hot Rod
The Orange King
Still possible, but not confirmed:
Jason Van Etten
Zippa Head
D'Arcy M.
Day Tripper
Halcyon
Dave L.
I'll wait on a few more before I open the bidding pool for the Mega Power set.
Now here's the fun wrinkle. I have been in touch with both Larry (The Orange King) and Mark Swick (Bornagain79) about the possibility of a friendly grudge match between the two. Both of them loved the idea, so there's a distinct possibility that Mark will make an appearance at our event in August. Not 100%, as it's an 8 hour drive for him, but he said he'd let me know.
If this happens, we'll record the event for all to see!
Good times!

Orange King vs bornagain is a solid enough grudge match, but I still want BBH vs dr.death!
Does the winner get to sell his opponent's deck on ebay?

<snicker> Something tells me they might not go for that, (just a hunch), but I'll broach the subject and see what they say! :P

BBH will need to edit the topic but we're going to be playing at Dueling Grounds: 1193 Bloor St West, Toronto (corner of Bloor St W and Brock St).
Entry fee is $10, payable in person or through Paypal.
Prize structure is:
With about 12 people:
First place: Ra's Al Ghul Holo Character
Second place: Set of Assault On Onslaught Missions
With about 16 people:
First place: Ra's Al Ghul Holo Character
Second place: Set of Assault On Onslaught Missions and Events
Third place: TBD
With 20+ people:
Same as Third place but with a Fourth place prize, also TBD.
Same format that BBH posted, so 4 rounds of Swiss with the top 8 going into the knockout round. Don't know about knockout round seeding yet, be it randomized or 1-8/2-7/3-6/4-5.
based on the "last tournament" results can we pick teams this time? For those who played in Decipher's LotR system this was a popular way for players who didn't get to go to the major events to participate and cheer on their favorites in the tournament. Each online participant was alloted a certian number of "points" to spend (say 25). Players participating in the tourament were worth a pre-set number of points 0-25. (0 for non ranked players who were unlisted up to 20 points for the reigning world champ). You were required to have at least two people on your team but not more than 4 (or some similar limitation). Each time your team mate won/advanced they gained you points. the online participant with the most points won!
At this point this may be a bit complicated (as one tournament may not be enough to "rank" the players that previously participated) but I think it would allow a more diverse selection of players being chosen across the board and even if one gets knocked out another player on your team could go advance enough to make up for it in points.
What do you think?
That's BBH's realm. He's doing the offline winner pool.
EDIT:
Included with the entry gift (thanks to Bios):

Not a legit card, but a print out on photo paper and you can use one in your decks. One printout per person. Exclusive to the OP meetup in August!
Bump! :)
There's only 25 days left until the tournament, please contact me to let me know you're coming!
3rd and 4th place prizes will be a choice of Adam Warlock Promo cards. 3rd place winner choose which promo card they want (and possibly/likely additional cards), 4th place gets the remaining toy.

Allowable Proxies: MARVELS and any officially released card. All proxies must be a reasonable facsimile of the actual card with clear and legible text.
Does this mean that proxies are allowed now?
I don't have to spend 40$ on an A-Next? :P
Correct, all proxies are allowed provided you follow the above (or ask me to make one for you).

Bump. Updated the information, BBH, please update the first post with the info.
I should be there for sure, I just have to figure out how I'm getting up there.
can i make a suggestion for playoff seeding?
winner of 1-8 plays the winner of 4-5
winner of 2-7 plays winner of 3-6
alternatively, you could have the top seed play the lowest seed to advance to each round.
Seeding an elimination tournament is always the tricky part.. the seeding was all BBH's idea. I wanted to do re-seeding for the round-of-4.
I'm having trouble getting the house rules document from the blog to properly print. It wants to print the sidebar with the mini versions of the pages, and only does page 1, and not even all of it. Any suggestions?
Just FYI, the August Tournament will not feature BBH's (BigBadHarve) house rules. Those will only be used when BBH hosts (or something like that).
Here's a PDF of it: http://overpower.ca/uploads/tournament_guide_final.pdf
I'm sure BBH might've updated it, I last received his rules for the April meetup.
well, the reason i suggested it, is because assuming the 4 top seeds advance, 1 would play 2, and 3 would play 4.
usually, tournaments are seeded so you always have the possibility of a 1vs2 final
True, I guess nothing is really set in stone, BBH chose those seedings though.
I'm more than willing to go with [1v8]v[4v5] and [2v7]v[3x6].

I've seen it done all manner of ways. But set it how you like, it's your show Jack. We even had this chat, that high vs high is the standard, but I thought it might be interesting to shake it up.
Bottom line is that everyone knows going in what the format will be.
See you guys on Saturday!
WOO!

Then it is decided, I'll make the announcement to everyone before we start games.

And there's also 3rd and 4th place pairings too to determine the winner of the Adam Warlock promos if we manage to get 16+.
Thanks to Jack and Sean (and all others helping) for putting the tourney/meetup on.
It was fun getting to see these cards played again and the high level of interest people still have for it.
One thing that needs a figuring out is to decide the tie-break format to seed the top-8 if there's people with the same record in 9th place and beyond. That was one issue that came up and we'll work on that for the next tournament.
We'll also stop the practice of preventing playing partners from playing each other during the swiss rounds. We are only going to unmatch pairs of playing partners in the first round (which is random), but for the 2nd to 4th+ swiss rounds, we will match players up by the records to seed them into the elimination rounds.
