Title: Homemade holo heroes

There was a period, believe it or not, when you could get holoheroes for free. Well, free if you were prepared to do some work. After the Batman holoseries had been around for a while you could buy boxes of it in bulk for about $12 each. Even though the Overpower holo heroes averaged 1 per 3 boxes, if you bought a case and then sold on all the other chase cards (and there were a LOT of chase cards in this set, plus two rarer parallel series) you essentially got the holo heroes for free. You also got left with a LOT of the regular Batman holoseries cards.

Matt Fell had the bright idea of printing up some stickers to turn these spare cards into homemade holoheroes. Worked out pretty well don't you think? Here's one side by side with an actual holo hero.

The only downside is that carefully cutting out the stickers was VERY laborious. I'm sure you could probably print on some form of clear adhesive sheet these days. Here's what the stickers look like:

I have a bunch that I never completed - cutting out those icons was pretty tedious....

Awesome idea, I thought about doing something too. Maybe a simple transparency used for overheads with the lower-third and icons printed and just snug them together in a sleeve. Looks the same plus you don't have to physically ruin cards.

Yes. I think that would work great if you could get good color printing on the transparency. Back when these were made (1999?)  you really had to use a laser printer to get good quality on transparencies. Few people had access to color laser printers. Matt had a decent quality ink jet printer but I don't think it printed well on transparencies.

I have very few of the complete stickers left. Strangely it looks like I made about a dozen but I only have 3 of the complete cards myself. Maybe I traded some to Matt, maybe I gave some as tournament prizes at our tournaments in Oakland. I don't remember. DrD - do you have any?!?

IF someone wants to design and print out either more stickers or transparencies I have hundreds of the Batman Holo series cards I'd donate to the cause. Let's see I have at least 3 full sets and 1 set just missing 6 cards. Plus a parallel gold series set. Each set contains numerous different Batmen cards - I think I count at least 9 just with Batman. There's a checklist here with images of each card:

The easiest chase cards to get, the holo-action cards, are also very cool. H1 with the Joker using a piranha attack is very cool.

Transparencies would probably work fine, but window decals (the ones you can get at Staples, I think they are Churchill brand or a similar name) would be even better. They are much thinner than a transparency, and you don't have to have precise gluing skills to get them on since you can peel them off and reapply.

I never knew that they used the same art on the trading cards as they did for the holo heroes...that's really great for proxying holo heroes on the off chance someone wanted to use them.

Yes, and just for completeness sake, if you wanted to proxy a set of holo-heroes you'd need cards:
#3 (Two-Face), #10 (Batman Detective), #12 (Batman Avenger), #19 (Comm Gordon), #24 Ra's Al Ghul, and #28 (Catwoman).

Get the parallel set and you can make yourself gold versions.

JohnL - Had you decided on grids for the 8 holo variants that you posted without the stickers?  Always good to get the author/creator's opinion.  The cards look quite professional!

I don't want to claim credit for someone else's work! These cards were made by Matt Fell (aka The Grim Jester). If Matt is googling his name and finds this post, Hi Matt!.

That being said, I've put these cards away again but I have a photo of one of the sticker sheets. Here's what Matt gave the villains (E F S I):

Poison Ivy: Pamela Isley - 5 3 2 6
Penguin: Oswald Cobblepot - 5 5 1 6
Two-Face: Harvey Dent - 5 6 3 6
Scarecrow: Dr Jonathan Crane - 5 6 1 7
Joker: Clown Prince of Crime - 5 4 2 7
Riddler: Edward Nygma -  3 4 2 7

You already have
Robin: Tim Drake - 2 6 2 7
Nightwing: Prodigy - 2 7 3 5
Huntress: Urban Tracker 3 6 3 6

and the three others on that second sheet are:
Batman: Dark Knight - 2 8 4 7
Azrael: Avenging Angel - 4 8 4 4
Jim Gordon: Commissioner - 4 5 3 6 'May play level 6 and 7 Fighting and Intellect Teamworks with bonuses doubled'

I got my transparency sheets in the mail today so I started printing off some holos. One very important thing to remember is that printers can't print white, so that's one obvious problem. The prints are also not as opaque as I thought they would be, they are still quite see-through. Otherwise, I think this makes a very plausible proxy if viewed from a distance or webcam.

Without further ado, here's what I created compared to the real thing:
