So, I recently acquired about a dozen old Gambit trading cards (lots with ratings on back). One of the cards I got was a holographic card. Taking a cue from JohnL's custom Holo Hero cards, I've decided to make a Holo Hero out of it ;D
In looking at a lot of those ratings, Gambit's fighting skill was almost always rated about 2 points higher than his energy. This stood out to me a lot, considering how much damage potential he has in his mutant ability. But, when I considered that his Energy attacks are very circumstantial, it made sense.
In terms of Overpower, I've seen a lot of discussion about who has what, for an Energy rating, and why. One of the things I've seen brought up is for things like common weaponry, or a person's inherent speed. Gambit is constantly fighting by charging things, but that is still somewhat circumstantial - but he's also very, very fast, so his Energy rating "should" reflect that, as he's able to use his speed for defense...
Considering the observation / input BBH gave me regarding Inherent Abilities and power grids, and all of the ratings I saw on his trading cards, this is what I'm thinking so far...
Gambit: Guild Leader
5-7-3-5
"Energy Power Grid Rating is 7 for offense."
I figured he should still be just as expensive (as most/all of the Holo's didn't change the total grid value of the characters). His Energy Grid is still above "normal" human, because of his incredible speed/agility. And then, since he can produce a lot of energy output for offense, I boosted his Energy Grid for offense. I know that the only Grid Boosts like this that exist in OP Legion is the "8 for defense." version, but I try not to let the past determine the future ;)
His fighting rating should rival that of Nightcrawler, Bishop, Longshot, etc. Let's not forget that he had quite a bit of training through his involvement with the Assassin's Guild, even before he ever became the dual-leader he is in this card.
His strength should never have really been a 4. When has Gambit ever shown himself to be near the peak of normal human strength? I think Batman would win in an arm wrestling contest ;D
His intellect gets a boost because of his title here. By the time he was leading both the Thieves Guild and the Assassin's Guild, he was showing quite a bit more cunning and smarts than he ever showed circa 1996.
So, thoughts?
UPDATE:
The finished product!

The Batman card on the right is authentic and the Gambit one on the left is my Custom. I'm gonna look into getting the Cable, Magneto, and Wolverine Holos from the same series and make more ;D
Awesome. Very well done.
thanks! i'm looking forward to getting the other 3 Holo cards from that set. please take a minute to give feedback on the other holo ideas.
anyway, it was surprisingly simple and not really that difficult, technically speaking. i'm super happy with the final product, too. i just hope it's good enough to impress Gambit's #1 Fan... :-[
Excellent work! ;D
I must say that you did a great job in breaking down his stats and why they are what they are. I always thought Gambit was deserving of a 7 somewhere, and being that his energy comes from "other" sources, the 6 or higher never really made sense to me. I recognize that holo. Where did you say it was from again?
Thanks!
It's from the 1992 Impel set. I don't know much else about the set, but I had the 5th card for just about... ever. I don't even remember how/where I acquired it. Apparently, there were 5 random inserts.
XH-1 Wolverine
XH-2 Cable
XH-3 Gambit
XH-4 Magneto
XH-5 X-Men (Blue Strike Force)
Looks pretty awesome. I really like how authentic it looks.
Nicely Done.
Good job! I remeber that card. At first I was really struggling with his stats in having a 5 energy (compared to Bishop/Nightcrawler's 6) but once I reread it and saw the inherent I think problem solved.
What did you use as the template for the bottom of the card (name, inherent, etc). I've worked on my own and cannot get it to come out for anything.

I grabbed a chunk of the green from Storm's custom card off this thread: http://www.beenhereandthere.com/SMF/index.php?topic=344.0 (http://www.beenhereandthere.com/SMF/index.php?topic=344.0)
It was large enough that when I shrunk it down to my printing size it still turned out pretty well.

Thanks! it took a bit of work on the process, but once I had it down, it's pretty easy/quick. I print the icons/border on name-tag labels, then I use a box-cutter to cut them out. I stick them to those firm, but flexible plastic sleeves and insert the card, so as not to damage the card itself. Then into a hard plastic sleeve =]

I've been dabbling with a few different printing methods right now. Where I work we have the equivalent of "full Avery sheets" it is basically 1 full page label that you can print on and cut to the size you want. so every now and then one gets "misprinted" ;) and I have a sheet or 2 to test with - if I end up liking it enough I will definitely pick some up for easy 'print-n-stick' cards.
