Okay, the day is done and here are the preliminary results:
Breadmaster took top prize for the day with a deck design borrowed from Matt G - Beyonder, X-babies, X-men: OT and Prof X (3 stat) using Stark Enterprises as a battlesite.
That means that Ranerdar wins the pool and the pack of Megapower Promos. Ranerdar, if you'd like to PM me your address, I'll fire those off as soon as I can.
Pass the Gestalt took 2nd place, with his Beyonder, Hawkeye (3 stat), X-babies and X-man deck. Oscorp earns the Finite Power promo.
I took 3rd place myself, with my team of X-man, Thor, Scarlet Witch and Dr. Strange; earning an unopened Adam Warlock action figure. I was on a nice run, 4-0 in the swiss rounds, right into the semi-finals where my streak was promptly stopped by Breadmaster.
More results and decks to be posted later.
-BBH
breadmaster - Beyonder/X-Men: Original Team/X-Babies/Professor X (3 grid) [R], Crossing, Stark Enterprise
Matt G. - Captain America/Daredevil/Professor X/Dr. Strange [R], Shattered Image, Any Hero
BigBadHarve - X-Man/Thor/Scarlet Witch/Dr. Strange [R], Dark Phoenix, Any Hero
zippa_head - Iron Man/Mr. Fantastic/Dark Beast/Silver Sable [R], Fatal Attractions, Any Hero
D'Arcy - Captain America/Sabretooth/Bishop/Kingpin [R], Shattered Image, Any Hero
supercal - [H] Wolverine/Deadpool/Alpha Flight/Sabretooth [R], Eye of the Storm, Danger Room
Hot Rod - Ray/Starjammers/Ghost Rider/Dr. Strange [R], Shattered Image, Any Hero
Day Tripper - Reavers/Typhoid Mary/Heroes for Hire/Thing [R], Crossing, Any Hero
Pass the Gestalt - Beyonder/X-Man/X-Babies/Hawkeye [R], Crossing, Morlock Tunnels
bamf! - Neron/Reyes/Donald Pierce/Cerebro [R], Infinity Gauntlet, Onslaught's Citadel
Ted C - Crystal/Spawn/X-Man/Inhumans [R], Crossing, Any Hero
Jack - [H] Invisible Woman: Malice/Thing (3 grid)/Namor (3 grid)/Human Torch: Invaders, Annihilation Affair, Any Hero
Orange King - [H] Namor/Mr. Fantastic/Invisible Woman/Thing [R], Infinity Gauntlet, Onslaught's Citadel
Orange Prince - Spawn/Heroes for Hire/X-Babies/Flash [R], Dark Phoenix, Any Hero
I didn't catch all homebases used, though you can expect Marvel Universe/Omniverse for the Battlesite decks, Team OP for the Any Hero decks and the ones with [H] in front used a team specific homebase.
yep, as was mentioned, this deck was taken directly from a concept by matt g, with stark enterprises chosen after PTGestalt used hawkeyes 'quiver of arrows' against me in the last casual meet up with his beyonder deck.
if you get quiver out early enough, what this team lacks in offensive firepower will quickly turn into a devastating card advantage. this will be best illustrated in the finals
we'll see if my nerves appear on video, as they were defenitely present (harv said he could see me shaking....yikes!)
i'd say most important for me though, was how my luck steadily built throughout the tourney. in my first match (which is also on video i believe) against none other than matt g, i duped heavily, and consistently.
in the quarters, after hot rod bet 4 FTW midgame, i somehow survied THREE hq's in one hand (he duped like mad this time)
in the semis i drew my ko event first hand, after not being much help all tournament. on the other hand, hideout discovered was good to me all day, expept the finals, where neither of us had a single teammwork.
the most insane draw of the day came late in the finals. because we both had the ko event, i had to make a decision with who to ko 2nd. i went with professor x, as that gave me more versatility with the xmen ADs. i had one 8 energy power card left, and with the time limits, it was unlikely to go to the power pack. after playing professors mental bolt from xmen, i drew the 8e, the only unusable card in the deck.
it was alot of fun guys. also, big thanks to jack for all the work he did for this. organizing, video, and making FANTASTIC proxies on request for everyone...kudos
PS: i also won the random t-shirt giveaway, good day all around for the breadman :)
Congratulations to Breadmaster and everyone else who had the opportunity to participate. Sounds like it was a hell of a meet-up!

Check out that Beyonder.
Damn you Harvey.... I think you lost on purpose so you wouldn't win the pool for me. ;)

Yup. I even say so in one of the videos! :P
"Damn it, if I win, I have to send Dr. D. a prize! I suppose I'd better throw the match!"
Because winning an Adam Warlock action figure is SO much better than taking that Holo hero. :o

This Ra's Al Ghul sitting infront of me here is awfully nice. ;D
BM was destined to win that tournament, you were just in his way. If you saw what he managed to wriggle out of vs me, then you'd know that he was "The Chosen One" and getting the action figure was the best possible outcome. :P
Are those all specials placed to Hawkeye because of the Quiver of Arrows? How are there even that many?
If that were negated at some point, would you have to discard all (but one) of them?
those specials are placed on beyonder, through quiver of arrows via a battlesite
PTG had the same thing as well, but hawkeye is on the team, so he gets 2 cracks as it in case negated.

And you guys have that Batman: Detective from the last one as well. Lucky Breadman wanted the AoO missions. ;)
And I'm hardly in a position to argue with you about his chosen one status. His cards were a perfect storm of destruction to me from the get go. I had a small window of opportunity for a comeback, and bet 4 for the loss in that one round (thankfully taking it) but even that wasn't enough to reverse the momentum in the long run.

Yes, Quiver of Arrows allows him to place an unlimited # of specials. Very effective when played through Beyonder. If the Quiver gets negated, he doesn't have to lose the cards placed, but would not be allowed to place anything further.

BBH, what brand of sleeves are you using? Are they completely opaque? I keep trying to find some white sleeves, but the backs of most that I've seen are a bit transparent.

I'm using the Ultra-pro brand. They're somewhat translucent, not entirely opaque. I think that's the best you can hope for with white sleeves. But I've noticed that their other colours also suffer the same problem. Matt G's yellow sleeves, and his other deck with red sleeves are also somewhat translucent. Orange sleeves aren't much better.
-BBH
My old Ultra-Pro sleeves, which I probably bought in 96, were completely opaque. I bought a new set to replace them this year (also ultra-pro and also red) and they're much less opaque. They have a better feel to them, but I was a bit disappointed.
What about White Dragon Shield? I've also seen some Japanese branded sleeves at a comic shop here, haven't tested for transparency yet. I like my reds, they were cheap :P
Oh, and my OverPowerOnline YouTube account is now allowed to put up 15 minute+ videos, so I'll be uploading all future videos onto that account. Don't forget to subscribe!
Woot! Go Jack!
Ah, it's too bad that the newer Ultra-Pro products aren't as good as they used to be. They seem to have a bunch of inconsistencies in length too, so mixing and matching two different packs of same colored sleeves can still leave you with a marked deck. Those KMC/Japanese white sleeves are also transparent, unfortunately. Dragonshields are notoriously durable, so I bet you're right about their white being opaque. Player's Choice white is also completely opaque, but they are extremely low quality (they don't split after shuffling that much, but the clear window becomes foggy really quick).
Anyway, I've seen about half the match videos and so far the most salient observation is the amount of games that go to time. Thirty minute rounds is a bit extreme, but it should be doable if play proceeds at a reasonable pace. I can sympathize with needing to take some time to calculate before venturing and deciding when to concede...but taking three minutes to place or spending a minute deciding whether or not to defend is the kind of stuff that leads to every game running out of time. I haven't seen the top cut matches yet, but I'm guessing those are timed too.
Best match so far has to be Orange King losing to a first turn DOW/Viking Pyre, though he didn't seem too happy about it.

My ultra-pro black shields from 12 years ago are STILL in solid shape. They certainly don't make them like that any more.
Yeah, Larry was not pleased at the match against my team. He already feels DoW is broken, add to that my ability to craft the perfect winning hand, set him right off. He had a bit of a rant after we were done.
I have some choice words in the semi-finals when Breadman takes out my DoW with a lil Iceman... Ha! Such is the way of the cards.
As powerful as DoW is, I think one has to look at the overall results to judge balance. Only 5 of 14 players this time around were using Battlesites. But the finals came down to two battlesite decks.
The obvious problem with DoW is that while it can be game changing, it's not reliable. It's wonderful to get it in the first hand, but how many times have you played a match where it gets buried right at the bottom?
I posit that with DoW, there is a nice balance between any heroes and sites. It may not seem that way when your site is locked down and you're sitting there with a handful of activators and losing your team, but without DoW, any hero teams are much more vulnerable. Perhaps irritating in the moment, but certainly not broken.
Next tourney, I'll use a battlesite team to back up my words. ;)

As powerful as DoW is, I think one has to look at the overall results to judge balance. Only 5 of 14 players this time around were using Battlesites. But the finals came down to two battlesite decks.
I was hoping someone would point that out. Even given the extreme variance of DoW, Battlesites are still the more powerful mechanic. The role of DoW is to keep Battlesite decks in check (15 or 16 card sites was the norm when you knew you would only be facing other Battlesite decks), and then the marginal utility of Any Heroes is still valuable in a deck that is naturally high to venture, or has an extremely low duplicate count, or wants to win in the powerpack, etc. Also, Fortress of Solitude is still arguably the best card in the game, so what Any Heroes lack in versatility they make up for in raw power.
It's a perfect balance really, though Any Heroes could use one more tiny boost for true parity (something like an AI). It's strange to think about what would have happened to Any Heroes if the game had continued on. At a certain point, you have to stop printing really good Any Heroes that can go into any deck, or you can run a deck with 15+ Any Heroes and pad your deck so much that you never have any dupes. The best direction to go would have been to make more bizarre or specific Any Heroes. That way they would still be usable, but not able to go into any deck by default. I think the best homemade example of that is JohnL's card that allows you to search for three level 1 powercards. It's good, but you can't just toss it into any deck like you can with Guardian, Leech, etc.

Okay, the day is done and here are the preliminary results:
Breadmaster took top prize for the day with a deck design borrowed from Matt G - Beyonder, X-babies, X-men: OT and Prof X (3 stat) using Stark Enterprises as a battlesite.
Bread is on a roll! Congrats.
