Title: How old are you today and back when you started playing?
Post by: Bios on February 10, 2012, 05:32:19 AM
I will be 37 on April. Back in 95' when I started playing I was 20 years old, and one of the oldest players in my group. There were a couple guys over 30 back at the time, but the others were just kids!

I'm 26 now, and started playing when I was in 5th grade. I think kids playing CCGs these days have it much worse than we did back in the Overpower days. Reading spoilers online, being able to easily buy singles instead of booster packs, easy access to the strategies of other players...it was more fun being in the dark. The thrill of opening a chase card in a pack that you didn't know existed, the fun of discovering powerful strategies independent of other playgroups, ahh memories.

I'm 28 now. I was 11 when the game first came out and I started playing it.

I remember when I first got into it, I used to go to K-Mart and pick up the original OP starter decks because the only places to buy OP were a)K-Mart - original decks and b) local card shop - but he barely ever kept anything in stock. As a little kid starting out my only thought was to get all of the characters so I would save my allowance and go to K-Mart each week and pick up a new starter deck!  8)

I'm 23 today and I probably started playing in 1997 when I was 8 or 9.

I'm 30. I started playing when I was 13. For Christmas of '95, my mom got me a booster box! I was the envy of all my friends... that memory inspired my wife to buy me another booster box, 15 years later (when I had long since lost all my old collection). Much to her regret, since my passion is now revived! haha!

I'm 28 now and started playing right when it came out, which was right after my i turn twelve. I only played up though the launch of Monumental though. Then my collection pretty much sat all though high school and college, although we would still play a few times a year.

After I finally finished school in 2008 I started collecting again and have been ever since. Still don't play that much, as my only playing partner is 2000 miles away.

Interesting topic. I'm forty-something (and quite a lot of something) and was a little over thirty I think when OP came out in 1995. Same for Cherie who is just a few months older than me. When we went to our first tournament (OP regionals) and Cherie was playing some youngster who was quite visibly amused by playing someone so old I turned to her and said 'It's your mom dude.' We still use that phrase as a bit of an in joke. After that first experience though OP always seemed a pretty egalitarian game. There were always a range of different player ages but OP, like many CCG's, never attracted much of a female audience.

Wow, must feel much more comfortable for us "older" folks to reveal our age with quite a few more others in the same age range.  ;D I'm 38 and got into OP during college in '95 when it first came out. So if I do the math right I was 21 when I started playing. I was a late bloomer when it came to comics as I started collecting around that time as well. Played regularly with one friend and we stopped collecting before the Mission Control set came out. Over the years, I ended up buying booster boxes for Mission Control, IQ, and Monumental OP sets even though I wasn't playing. It wasn't until a couple years ago that suddenly there was a big renewed interest with my college friend to play again and since then we've introduced some more people to the game. That's what got me into getting the Classic and X-Men sets and try to complete all the Marvel OP cards.

That is so true!  So much of the joy of these kinds of games comes from not knowing what you could get in a pack.  I know people who still play Magic regularly and before they go to a launch tournament for a set they will have already read every single card and all the strategies and deck builds people have come up with.  When I go to a Magic tournament I'll usually go to a sealed or draft for a new set and go in blind.  I don't do great, but I have a lot of fun seeing the cards for the first time.

I started playing Overpower when the first set came out but I only had a couple of friends who played and didn't even know there were tournaments and whatnot.  I don't remember how old I was but I am 29 now so someone can do the math.  I played through until right around DC came out.  My friends were all playing Magic by then and so was I, but I was still interested in Overpower.  No one else wanted anything to do with intellect or new cards so after DC that was it for my group.  I didn't get back into the game until years ago when I started my original forum.  That was a while before this one.   I don't remember exactly when that was, but sometime before 2008.  Maybe 2006?  Anyone who was on the old board might recall.  I had quite a shock when I learned about all the new stuff since Mission Control.

29 now.  I started playing when I was 15....  I think.   I had collected previous sets of the Marvel Cards up until '95 and when OP came out I collected it as well, with little interest in playing.  Some time after IQ was released was when I first started to play and go to tournaments, but I only collected marvel at the time and I stopped collecting and playing in general after Classic came out.

Got back into it about 5 or 6 years ago, shortly after a trip to a comic store on vacation had re-ignited my love of comics.

32 now and I began back in '95 right before Powersurge released.  At the same time I was being introduced to Magic:The Gathering as well, and I really enjoyed the different play styles both games had, but being that I started playing M:TG going into it's 4th year, I was WAY behind the times and easily beaten by the "veterans" at my school who had been playing for 4 years, but when we played Overpower, Myself and 2 of my friends dominated those guys time and time again.  I really enjoyed being on a level playing field with my other opponents, and try to stay current with the games that still interest me today.

I vividly remember buying our first starter decks (Deadly Foes and Mutants Unite) and 2 or 3 boosters each at the Co-Gos (convenience store) on Washington Pike in Carnegie, PA. They've since razed that Co-Gos and put in a CVS.

I can't remember how we got turned on to the game though. It might have been advertising, or another friend... I think maybe one of my younger brother's friends. The only problem with that is I don't remember anyone ever having the game but us.

Either way, it was a good purchase! I'm 30 now and too lazy to do the math, but we were early adopters of OP.

I even traded through mail for several years way back when. I definitely remember trading with the Orange King. I'm not sure how I got those connections... maybe through some website or an AOL group of some kind? Does anyone remember that?

First purchase had to have been not long after release, which was a booster pack.  1995, that would make me...8 at time of purchase, I guess.  Currently 25.

38 now.  Was 21 back in 1995 and in college when I started buying cards.  There was nobody to play with except my roommate, but he only played because I was interested and he was a good friend.  I collected comics, so I still enjoyed buying the cards even though it would be years later until I could play fairly regularly.

I'm 30 years old now. I started in 1998 when I was 16 years old, probably late in 1998. I acquired my own collection from a friend who gave me all of his cards, so I had everything through Classic OverPower, and I do mean everything. This friend had at least two of every card, if not more, and for cards like Vertigo  he had almost ten of each card. It was enough to give my brother and cousin their own collection and still have enough cards left for my friends to build decks when they played with us. I bought Image and X-Men on my own and pieced the sets together during some intense buying at the local flea market. We had the X-Men set in one day, having bought several boxes as a group from one of the vendors selling. Image took quite a bit longer to complete, but I was able to score Malebolgia and the multi-five card in packs pretty early on. I didn't know the value of the multi-five at the time, and figured Malebolgia was rare, but didn't realize how rare. I had thought Spawn was the rare character card as it took me a couple trips to find him (my brother actually bought it in advance to give me a scare, as it was gone when I went to buy it from the local vendor, but he traded the card to me for Grifter and Violator character cards).

Today; my cousin might still have his cards, he moved out of the area and I only see him during family get-togethers a couple times a year. When my brother stopped playing he let me have his cards and I sold the bulk of my collection (except for one of each character card) in two massive lots for a nice chunk of money several years ago. In all, we played quite often from late 1998 to 2003 and on and off for a year or two after before I sold the bulk of my collection.

i know this is an old thread, but i just tripped upon it while moseying around the site.....
You people make me feel OLD!!!!  i'm 53, and started playing at 36 with my son & daughter, then later with step sons and friends of the kids.  (Couldn't find any adults that were interested, other than my younger brother who lives 2 states away.)  Got so into the game that i put myself in deep debt buying boxes of expansion packs, trying to complete 2 complete sets (1 to collect, 1 to play with).

i'm 30 right now and i started playing when i was 13-14 years old.  I didn't have much money in those days, no allowance, so my friend would lend me cards to build decks with, he only had one set so we could never have the same hero in our decks.  it was ok though since he liked strength decks and i like fighting decks.  Didn't start my collection until around year 2000 and i think i've acquired about 80% of all the sets which is pretty good since i stopped collecting in 2002 when i thought no one was playing anymore.

I am 27 now and I started playing when I was 21, or sometime near that. I never heard of the game, but my husband would often talk about it because he liked it so much. He bought me a bunch of cards, and convinced me to start playing. I have not played much, because I have never been very interested in any deck building games until very recently.

I'm trying to get my wife and friend to play, but my wife is resistant.  I just picked up the new UpperDeck Legendary card game, which went over REALLY well with my friends, (we get together every Tueday night as a game night) and my wife seemed to like it too.  I'm planning on using it to bridge more people into Overpower.

Started playing the day it came out. I had read about it in Wizard magazine. I remember how popular MtG was at the time but I had no interest in a game that I was not on board with from the beginning. I was into Marvel comics at the time so it was a perfect match. I was 24 at the time. My brothers were 21, 18 & 15. I bought about 20 packs and we put teams together not really knowing the rules or strategies. We started beating on each not using the venture aspect of the game. It was my youngest brother that first started grasping the concept of a winning team (at that time). Fun times :'(

I have never heard of or played UpperDeck Legendary, is it at all like Overpower?
I can relate to your wife not being able to get into overpower. I use to not enjoy it at all and only played because my husband wanted me too. It literally took him years to get me interested in playing. What got me into it was he started having me watch ALL of the old comic cartoons. I only half payed attention, but after a while I started to care about the characters. Now I am semi familiar with the characters and it is actually fun to play.
We play a lot of games too. Have you ever played any of the Fantasy Flight games? Particularly Decent or Arkham Horror?

Some the the shows responsible for helping me get into overpower are: Spiderman the animated series, Avengers the earth's mightiest heroes, X men the animated series, Justice League, Young Justice, Batman Beyond, Static Shock, The zeta project, Batman the animated series, superman the animated series.... There are more but I can't remember them.

Legendary just released from UpperDeck back in Nov-Dec.  It's a card game, but that's about the only similarity that Legendary and Overpower have.  Where in Overpower, you build your deck WELL in advance of the game, then go toe-to-toe with another person who did the same, in Legendary, you build your deck AS the game progresses, and instead of playing against the other players, players work together to defeat a villianous mastermind, who's plays are made autonomously though the rules of the game.  The villian has his own deck, which is automatically advanced at the start of each players' turn.  It also has rules for playing solo, if you are bored and by yourself or if you just want to try your luck on your own.

It's a neat game, but I wouldn't compare it to any of the TCG's out there, as all the cards needed to play come inside the box when you purchase the game.  There are no booster packs floating around that you need to buy to strengthen your collection, though I understand that UpperDeck has an expansion scheduled for release in June.

I remember trading a normal comic trading card for a copy of carnage's ag in 2nd or 3rd grade. I keep a copy of that card in my wallet. So that would have been between late 95 and early 97. So that was my first overpower card, before I played or anything

Started collecting when i was 9 or 10 in 98. I am turning 25 in June.
I actually made this popular at my middle school in 7th or 8th grade. I think one of the reasons my collection was  at about 69% when I got back into the game last year is because I would sell my own boosters on campus of my doubles. Especially getting rid of my dc crap. Because I didn't have a job or allowance as is kid.

I do owe a lot to my older brother because he had a job and spent a lot of money on these cards too.

Around that time there was a seller at the weekly flea market who was selling iq packs very cheap, one of the reasons I have a copy of power leech and 4r spider man.

At the comics shop I remember mission control and bs being the cheapest. I never got many classic , jla or image packs from them.

And yeah x-babies were immortal on the playground lol.

I started playing with my friends probably in 96,97 maybe?  I'm not really sure... you could get Monumental and I'm pretty sure Classic packs at the time.  I remember going OP nuts and selling off my Magic the Gathering dual lands for about 8 bucks a piece, about 20 or 25 duals, so about 200 bucks worth of IQ packs.  That, in hindset was a BIG mistake (dual lands are outrageous in price right now!), but I don't regret it.  The largest part of my collection came from a friend that quit and gave me all of his stuff, with the promise that if he ever wanted to play, I would build him a deck.  That's fair.  I'm 32 today... I've never given up on the idea that this game could relaunch.

Most likely. I played a lot in Buffalo and there were always a large group of Canadian players there. I would have to see the face, I don't remember names much. I remember Norman Barth from my NY regional games that's about it.

Im 27, i started collecting overpower when i was 9 years old

I had all but forgotten about the game until my 5 year old son found my lunchbox full of superhero cards

Weve been playing for about 3 months, and he's pretty much a pro.

Today, he was feeling cocky and he ventured 6 on the second battle and after I couldn't talk him out of it, he won the venture and the whole game

Wanted to share with somebody...

Anyone else teaching their kids to play?  If its worthwhile I was thinking about putting together a brief tutorial of my experience, the stages that I taught the game to him, etc...not sure if that exists or if it would be considered useful

I introduced the game to my niece and nephew over the Christmas holiday. They loved it! Although they were upset at me for not having told them about the game all these years. Ha! These new Marvel movies are really increasing the interest of the newer generations and I bet that if Overpower came out now, it would be very popular.

I don't remember how old I was when I started playing, but it was pretty much when the first set came out. I had read the adds in the comic books I was reading. I am now 47, as far as I can tell, the second oldest one in this thread so far. One of my best friends and I bought boxes of every exspansion that came out. In the beginning my wife collected and played too, but later lost interest. We not only  supplied all three of us, but another best friend and his younger brothers too. We never played in any tournaments, we never got news of them in Oswego, NY. I am however hoping to attend my first in PA in March. I have alot to learn between now and then. Looking forward to meeting some of you there.

I still love this game but have had a hard time finding time or people to play it with.  The one thing I miss about living in Ontario was being close to the large group of Toronto players.

Started back when I was an early teen, shortly after PowerSurge came out.
Bought a starter deck (the one with Carnage on the box, I loved Carnage so I had to have it) and got hooked BIG TIME!
