This is the official announcement of the Overpower Online Fantasy League
This is a league that is FREE to enter. It will be for the purposes of having fun, and learning about Overpower.
Official Rules will be observed in this league. No House Rules. DiD is in effect.
Each match will be the best of 3 games. You will have 1 week to complete your match, or you will be given a No Contest.
We will NOT use the Marvels set. Before anyone asks why, it's because it was never officially released. I don't see this as being a big deal. If you have a huge problem w/ this, simply don't enter the league.
10 Teams will be allowed to enter this league. If there is an overwhelming response to this, we will extend it.
Draft: Estimated Draft Date - Sunday April 1 8:00PM EST. You will have 2 minutes to make your pick. I will provide a conference call #.
When you draft a character, you are only drafting the one player card. For example. If you draft Mojo, you are drafting ONLY the Mojo from Powersurge OR from IQ. You do not get the right to use both Mojo's.
I estimate that the league will last for 10 weeks, followed by playoffs. The top 4 Teams will compete to determine a champion.
If you intend to participate in this league, please email me at johnnyvtec2@gmail.com. Use the Subject: "OPO League". Please include your Name (Nickname is fine) and Team Name.
Draft Order will be determined a few days before the draft. No draft pick trading is permitted.
I want everyone that enters this tournament to be perfectly clear about 1 thing...This league's purpose is to HAVE FUN. If you are going to be a source of conflict, I would rather you did not enter. I think everyone should look at this as an opportunity to spread interest in the game.
Thank you for your time and understanding.
If you have any questions, by all means, post them on this thread.
Regards,
DiceK
PS: Thanks to Zippahead for offering to assist. I will let you know if/when I'd like some assistance.
can one switch their deck around from match to match?

Yes.
ah, i see...that's new
kept scratching my head at 8 characters ;)
So, with the 3 and 4 stat characters being separate, does that mean that one person can draft 3-Stat Mojo and another person can draft 4-stat Mojo?
Also, where do we stand with the list of entrants? (my email will be coming later today)
is the draft serpentine?
Still count me in for playing and helping with it DiceK, I will email u later as well.

whats that mean?

Correct.
We have a total of 4 thus far.
I'm going to give it another few days. Hope to get 6 at least.
hey, can i register here, or do i have to send you the email
also, i'm not sure i understand this conference call stuff. is it an actual phone number, or can we do this online through a chat?

If we all have MSN, we can do a multi-person chat so we're all in the same window. I think most of us use MSN...

Let me know when the call is going to happen. I should have little trouble being a part of this. :D

can we get an update on this, DiceK? Seriously, I'm geeking out on this format. I even created my own Draft Board (i'm such a nerd!!) ;D
I really wish I had the time to do this! Just based on some your crazy posts on here a lot of you guys seem like you would be fun to play against. I am interested in hearing results as things turn out if someone doesnt care to update.

I will accept entries til tonight. We are at 6 or 7.
I will contact each player tomorrow.
I'm assuming we should have characters in mind for our 8 before the actual draft begins? lol We going by who's and underdog and who's not, cause I've only ever won a single game of OPO. :D

Probably good if you have some idea of your priorities :D
Also, it's a serpentine draft, so it shouldn't matter TOO much who goes first (the order will reverse, every other round).
P.S.So, I just re-read this:

and I realized I'll be in Disneyland at this exact time. Now, while I would love to have the date/time pushed back a little bit, I realize that I'm not the only person who has a schedule to consider. Since I'll be happily in Disneyland, I'm also not in a position to complain ;D So, anyway, if we're not able to move it, I could also simply supply you with my ultra-nerdy and clearly obsessive Draft Board and you could simply take the next highest rated Character each time it's my turn.
In the words of Mrs. Cope (my daughter's 1st grade teacher), "You get what you get and you're happy with it." ;) thanks
So, for all of my fellow posters who are not joining our league, I thought I'd post a little update. We've been doing a lot of emailing between us players and the league commish (DiceK), but I want to keep everyone else in the loop to some degree, at least to keep interest high for when we go into our next Season :D
Anyway, as it stands, we're currently working out when to hold the actual Draft. We're also waiting to hear the Draft order. Between this new OPOFL and the pending NFL Draft (later in Apr), I'm going a little crazy with all my mocking!! I'll be sure to post again when I get more deets ;)
The Draft is tonight at 10PM. I will post a listing of the drafted players afterwards.
After 10 tonight?
I'm happy to report that tonight's draft largely a success. Below are the results of tonight's draft.

Wow. No Mr. Fantastic.
I was a little surprised by this as well! I know why
I didn't pick him, because I still didn't want to use non-Xmen on account of being a homer for them ( ;D), but he's definitely top-tier, so I was surprised he lasted so long. I was also surprised no one took Mojo as a pretty cheap negater... I guess it keeps him as a viable option from Mojoworld, but that's a pretty seldom-used Battlesite...
Good luck to all the players. For the longest time I couldn't see the draft results but it finally showed up. ??? Looks like everyone got great characters.
I'm also surprised that Mr. Fantastic wasn't picked...crazy. I was a little surprised by Beast: The Brute as the #1 draft pick - curious on your thoughts Ncann (if you dont want to publicize it for strategy reasons, could you IM me? - I've never ran him and I'm wondering if I missed something - no offfense, just curious).
There were only 6 of us, a LOT of good character went unused. With more players the draft would have been interesting indeed as people scramble to take the heavy hitters.
I tried to go for the underdogs myself... but I'm wacky that way. =) Will Commissioner Gordon be able to defy the odds? Time will tell... dun dun dunnnnnn...
-BBH
I tried to join up, but was probablly the last to sign up and 7 just doesn't make a workable tourney group. Next time the draft is open I will try again.

I don't mind sharing, my logic was pretty straight-forward.
I wanted to be sure I took some one who has a negate, first. I also don't use bad guys, because bad guys are losers ;)
So, with the first pick, I knew I wanted a negater, and I knew I wouldn't pick again for 10 picks, so I also needed flexibility in power grid and cost. I thought about these characters and their variants as my priorities (because of good/evil): Beast, Scarlet Witch, X-Babies. The cheapest versions were X-Babies, Scarlet Witch, and Beast-TB.
X-Babies have some good specials beyond the (AO), a rounded grid to fit any power-type, and are super-cheap, but then you're also dealing with a max-5 character and you have to plan to compensate somehow. Since I wouldn't be picking for 10 more spots, I knew that could get tricky later on.
Scarlet Witch probably has the best specials of the 3 options, beyond her (AO), and she's still cheap at 17. The bigger problem I saw in selecting her, is that she's not a dual-grid and this would push me to include other Energy Characters. That wouldn't necessarily be a problem, in terms of who would be left at picks 12 & 13, but I was a little unsure if I'd be painting myself into a corner with her...
Beast: The Brute is still cheap, at 17, but he also has a dual grid of 7S, 6F, which offers more flexibility in building around him for a primary team with those later draft picks, and also building a secondary team as needed. He still has some decent specials beyond his (AO), and that offers a little more flexibility there as well.
The hardest thing about choosing first, was not knowing what direction other people would go, at all. I had no inkling, whatsoever. The only insight I had was that I figured BBH would buck the trend, because that's his MO (and he held true :D). So, I felt like Beast:TB was a safe, solid, utility choice.
On a side note: I actually drew up an entire draft board in Excel, but I forgot to email it to myself from work, so I was drafting "blind" and there were, in fact, several characters I meant to draft earlier in the rounds and I missed completely :-[

say, DiceK, I saw that BBH asked if we should each build 2 teams to use in each week's match-up and use them for the best of 3. So, if my A-team is beaten in the first match, I would then have to use my B-team on the second match (and possibly 3rd match, if I made it that far). While I'm not outright opposed to this idea, I'm not sure I like it... anyway, did you have a determination about that?
Also, it brings up another question I had. Obviously, drafting 8 characters gives us flexibility in building teams. Within each week, would we be allowed to use a different team for all games of the best-of-three matchup? like this:
week1 gm1: Gambit/Morlocks/Sentinels/B.T.Brute
week1 gm2: Gambit/B.T.Brute/A.Angel/Morlocks
week1 gm3: Rogue/Juggernaut/A.Angel/StrongGuy
week2 gm1: Gambit/Rogue/B.T.Brute/A.Angel
etc.
???

I think his idea was that we have 8 characters to use during the draft. How we vary it is entirely up to us. Of course, I could be wrong, but since no rules were outlined one way or the other it's a reasonable assumption.
I had the idea to make it interesting by using our choices to build two separate teams (which is pretty much what I chose my characters to do. I won't be mixing and matching, my teams were very specific in design, but that's me.
In any case, it should be fun. :)
-BBH
I'm obviously not competing, so take this with a grain of salt, but it would be cool for characters to have a limited number of knockouts for the tournament (kind of like basketball 5 fouls and you're disqualified). This way, you would have some long term strategy. You'd have to consider whether you wanted to use your big character all the time at the risk of him being knocked out. This would also be very cool if the championship round was a best of 3 or 5 series.
For clarification...Each person drafted 8 characters. You are allowed to switch out your team each week, but you may not switch in between games of the same match.
As far as having 2 teams, that was never anything I was thinking about. I will likely cycle out one or 2 characters, depending on how my first week goes.
Think about Fantasy Football. You have a lineup you set each week. That lineup stays the same the entire week; however, after the week is over, you can switch out one ore all of your players. That's what I was going for in this format. Think 4 starters and 4 bench players.
I apologize if everyone wanted a more detailed outline of rules, etc. I'm doing the best I can, given that I haven't played the game in about 15 years.
Here are the rules that I did detail, and will try to clarify for those that are confused:
1. Draft 8 (unique) characters. Beyonder is the only characters that can NOT be drafted.
2. May NOT use The Marvels Set
3. Play 1 Match per week.
4. Each Match is the best of 3 games.
5. You may switch out 1 or all of your Team's characters from week to week.
6. Dead is Dead is in effect.
7. Classic Inserts are allowed.
That's all I can think of right now.
Please let me know if there is still confusion.

No worries, man. I think this is crazy-cool idea and I'm still super-stoked about it. No doubt there will be things you think of adjusting, clarifying, or changing by the time this season is over, but that's why we'll have multiple seasons, right? ;)

I was thinking about it as well but couldn't be there for the draft portion, and also worried my crappy dial up connection would slow things down. :-\ Maybe next time.
DarKBladE09 and I played our first game last night (game 1 of the 3game series, if you will). I got stomped :-[
I'll keep the deets very short, but it was over in 4 hands with him winning all 4 in pretty comfortable fashion. I lost a character early, but he was revived in the 3rd hand, but I lost another character that same hand. The KO's weren't really my problem, so much as I got some bad draws.
I don't want to take anything away from his play though. He was mistake-free, where I definitely made some errors.

srsly?
well, our second game was better, but in the end I was drowned by lots of dup'ing in the power pack, even though I had the max-8 to his max-7. I almost eeked out an early hedge by using Juggernaut's 8S-displace on Colossus (had his Siberian Strength placed), but he pulled out a CLUTCH personal avoid for the big metal guy!!

Also, it occurred to me that with the current set up, I'm actually 0-1 and DKBE09 is 1-0 and our week is over (since he won 2/3), but then I thought maybe we should all play all 3 games each week, regardless of an 0-2 start for the week? that would make us all have 15 games played at the end of the season, and might make for a more clear Standings board? Let me/us know what you think, DiceK?

I was going alphabetical for the ties, yeah. also, as a winner, how would you feel about playing a 3rd game with your week1 opponent, even though you've secured your win? I mean, you're technically at a flawless 1-0, but if you agreed to another game, you're risking "dropping" to a 2-1... I might improve from 0-1 to 1-3... probably not a big deal, but I like the idea of a 15 game season more than a 5 game season :)
i'm down like a clown, charlie brown
all up to the commish though. it probably won't be necessary. head to head could be used as a tie breaker

Sorry for the delayed response. I am keeping in mind that everyone may not have a ton of time. If you go 2-0 you dont have to play the 3rd game. If we end up with a true tie of any kind, I will look at the head to head matchup.
Zippa and I finally had our match. Some wild matches.
Here's the Cole's Notes recap:
His team - Onslaught, Holocaust, Green Lantern and Prof X (r)
My team - Invisible Woman, Deathbird, Commissioner Gordon and Blue Beetle.
Game 1 -
I did a stupid bet 5 off the top, knowing that I couldn't take it. From there recovery was a pain. It looked like I was going to do it a few times, but in the end he hammered me and took the win.
Game 2 -
1. We both place a few cards, I notice that he places a few cards with no venture value. I bet 4. There's some back and forth, but ultimately I took the round.
2. I get my shockwave rocks the world event, locking all of his Energy icons. Since it locks down most of his cards I bet for the win and take venture.
Game 3 -
1. Shockwave Rocks the world again, only this time in the first hand. His Entropy event kills my one activator. I decide to go for broke and bet all 7. We back and forth it, but in the end I'm able to take it by 2 points.

I'm not trying to make excuses (especially since I've only beat Breadmaster, like, 2 times EVER), but I clearly brought a knife to a gunfight last night. I was mistaken when I was looking at the line-ups and I thought Breadmaster drafted the characters that DiceK drafted - so I was expecting the wrong things. Ultimately, my deck was severely overmatched and I didn't have much of a prayer in either of our games :-[
I'm coming to realize that I may be a big fish in a little pond, but in the ocean, I'm quickly swallowed up (X.X)

Well, obviously I'm not sure what kind of deck build you're using, or even the line-up for sure, but I did see a pretty clear strategy for you by drafting Commissioner James... ;)

I should start keeping track - I'm sure there are trends I could learn through my own mistakes... then again, who has time for something like that? lol
Guys, thanks for updating the results. I appreciate it.
Week 2 begins. Good Luck!
Well, my match with DiceK is done.
My team: Lex Luthor, Bastion, Dark Beast, Mr. Sinister (r) (Any Heroes)
His team: Heroes for Hire, Marauders, Starjammers, Velocity (r) (Outback battlesite)
Game 1 -
I manage to get DoW and Leech by the 2nd hand, putting me in a position to bet for the win in the 3rd hand, taking the game. Short one.
Game 2 -
This one was more of a brawl. He had me on the run for the first three hands. In the 3rd hand, he ventures 3 for the win, and it looked like he had me. After a few exchanges back and forth, I manage to turn the tide and cheat death. From there it's a slow recovery, and a misstep where I bet 4 with my leech, but he has all of his defensive activators and takes the round. I do manage to eventually win by a war of attrition, knocking out his team one-by-one.
Thanks for the games DiceK! Waiting for Breadman in week 3!

Seems like I'll be battling for 4th place, then! at least Week 3 will get rid of one of the undefeated card sharps :D
I'm a bit confused on the two rows of rankings. Can anyone please care to explain? :-\
yeah, the first column shows the weekly results, the second column shows how we got there.
For example, I've lost both my weeks so far, and in both weeks I lost our best-of-three by sweeps. Whereas Zippa lost his first week to BBH by tying that week, then losing that best-of-three tie-breaker. For the standings, we're first using the weekly results, then deferring to the individual match results for tie-breakers on that. So, Breadmaster has an edge on BBH right now because, while they're both 2-0, BBH has lost a match while Breadmaster has not yet lost (although, I'm not sure where DarKBladE09 fits with them at that posted record...)

Yeah, I had him in the first game and got greedy. The 2nd game was more his... the event snafu in question might have saved me, but other than that, the game was his from the get-go.
REVENGE IN THE FINALS! WAAAAARRRGH! :P

What were the teams?
I was using my venture deck - Invisible Woman, Commissioner Gordon, Blue Beetle and Deathbird with Morlock's Tunnels as the site
He was using an Any Hero deck consisting of - Reavers, Spawn, X-man and 3 stat Spider Woman.
-BBH
such a vanilla team i'm using :(

I see now. Thanks for the explanation! :)
not sure how the rest of the standings should look. zippa and I have to finish our matches for last week. when we left off, he had me 1-0. But, I just played BBH in some tight, high-risk play and eeked out my first W!
breadmaster 3-0 (6-0)
BigBadHarve 2-2 (5-5)
zippa_head . 1-1 (3-2)
DarKBladE09 1-1 (2-2)
DiceK . . . . . 0-2 (0-4)
ncannelora. . 1-2 (2-5) (without the 0-1 from zippa, yet)
in our tie-breaker, our first hand BBH got Best Laid Plans... I knew he was using that auto-venture team and using Excelsior, so I needed to plan carefully. I still needed to plant DoW, because I just couldn't be sure if he'd get some activators. I also planted my own Event to move the Completed Missions back to Reserve, because I knew I could place 7 cards of my current hand. Then I planted a lv.8 AP Power card and a Master Mold, figuring I need to get as few offensive Specials as possible.
So, back to the placing.
I had 1 duplicate. So, I place everything else. notably, Power Leech, A-Next, 7I attack for Sentinels and 5E attack for Juggs. He placed 4, I think. I venture 1, he ventures 2. I concede.
Next hand, his Event comes up: No E Icons to attack.
My Event comes up to reset the Completed Missions... and also my other 2 Events! D'oh!!
So, i'm down 3 cards - the 5E on Juggs, and the 2 extra Events. But, I had him outplaced, so I'm feeling tentative... then he Ventures 7 FTW!!!
there's some good, careful back-and-forth. The biggest move was me hitting Invisible Woman with Mutant Countermeasures (GA), and then hitting her again with Power Leech. Notably, it was that I used Power Leech on the AP icon, dropping his lv.5 and lv.6 Power cards...
In the end, I hit him with 24 points of venture, but after his manipulations through Inherents, Excelsior, and Frictionless Foam, it was 12-4 me.
First WIN! ;D

Lost my second game to zippa in terrible fashion :-\
on the plus side, my win over BBH earlier gets me out of last place! I'm coming after you next, DarKBladE09!!!
;D
Yup, got my arse handed to me. Alas, my Venture deck is a killer against battlesite teams, but not so effective against Any Heroes.
DarkBlade and I have done two of our 3 matches, with 1 win apiece. I'll update when that last match is done.

Speaking of upcoming matches, has anyone heard from DiceK lately? he's my last opponent (for next week), but it looks like he has some other games to get through first...
My apologies. I am still 1 or 2 games short of completing my match w/ Darkblade. Last week, I played Zippa_Head who defeated me 2-1. I will be sure to get w/ Darkblade this week and complete our match, as well as my remaining match.
I have been extremely busy with work, not allowing me much time for OPO.

Here's the fun part of the 'season'. Get out the computer models so we know which teams cheer on to give the underdogs a chance. LOL! ;D

no worries, man. I still can't seem to get ahold of DiceK. As I always said in High School - if the teacher's late, no one else is ;D
Guys, I apologize as well. I have been extremely busy with life and work. I may have some time this weekend to finish my last week match. Please bare with me. Thanks.
