Title: Bidding For Top Seeds
Post by: gameplan.exe on May 24, 2012, 03:10:38 PM
So, as I  mentioned here (http://www.beenhereandthere.com/SMF/index.php?topic=873.0), we're having a little going-away tournament. We're going to go double-elim, because this is still a card game, and even great decks almost always need more plays to prove themselves! ... anyway... So, we only have 6 players, though, so we'll need to figure out a way to seed the tournament. I came up with two ways, but since I felt like they were fairly unique, I'm actually splitting them into 2 separate topics (the other is here (http://www.beenhereandthere.com/SMF/index.php?topic=874.0)).

This idea is designed to save time, ultimately. I think it's unique, because I've never heard of anything like it, which of course makes me happy  ;)

So, traditionally, seeding for a Tournament Bracket is based on the relative strength or weakness of each team. It rewards the stronger teams with, at least on paper, the easier schedule. I definitely wanted to hold true to this concept, especially since we have 2 players who will get 1st round byes. In the absence of a Round Robin, Swiss Rounds, a Free Play time, or some other way to test deck strengths, I needed to devise a way to make the seeding fair (relatively, at least). So, here was my idea...

Everyone will probably feel like his deck is strongest, but in this system, he'll have to put his "money" where his mouth is, by bidding on the top seeding! Here's the way it will work:

#1 Seed is up for auction - every player will have the opportunity to voluntarily add duplicate Lv.1 Power Cards into his existing deck. Whoever offers to add the most duplicates will get the seed.

Then move on to the #2 Seed and repeat the process until all seeding is done! (or until all relevant seeding is done, in our case)

So, you think your deck or your skills are so good you deserve to be the #1 Seed? Well how strong will you be when you have to put 3 duplicate Lv.1 Power Cards into your deck? What about 5 duplicates? If some one is playing with Thor, they might be willing to break the bank and bid 5 or 6 or 7!!

I think this is a great way to handicap a person who feels their deck is super-strong. While I know certain players won't necessarily want the top seed, especially if it's Double-Elim, they may still want to prevent another player from getting. Or, to another point, if no one bids, then the first person to add a single Lv.1 Power Card will get the top seed. Pretty small price to pay, I'd say... so I'll bid a second Lv.1 Power Card - See how that gets in your head?!  :o LOL

Anyway, ideally, even with time constraints, doing a Round Robin Blitz like the one I described here (http://www.beenhereandthere.com/SMF/index.php?topic=874.0) would be ideal:

But, let me know what you think of both!  :D

The bidding idea is clever.  Really unique way of setting up a tournament.  I think I like the Round Robin Blitz as a better option for a "real" tournament setting, but if you and your friends are really into betting, Bidding could be the way to do it.  :D

Thanks! And it's true, I hope that we go the Round Robin Blitz route, because it's more pure, plus it's kinda new, plus it means getting to play more OP = Three Pluses!  lol

also, did you vote for which deck i'll be using?  ;D

Have you looked into the program TournamentMaker?
You can enter all entrances and have it randomly generate the placement for the double-elimination.

Since it is a double-elimination tournament, the most skilled player/top deck should come out on top in the end.

Thanks for the tip! I have not, but knowing my group, they don't trust RNGs and the like. They'd sooner roll dice, but I'll keep that program in mind for future uses  :)
