Title: California OP Tourney August 18
Post by: Judgeone on July 26, 2012, 02:53:17 PM
Hi, Judge, here.
I was the owner of All-American Comics in Hemet, CA. back in the heyday of OP.  I judged at least one tournament every week, with on average 16 -32 people showing , not to mention the '97 regional where 64 people played (The Great West Quake). There is a good contingent of guys starting to play here again. Most of us have moved from the desert to the coast here in Orange County.
This coming August we will get together (8-10 guys right now), but are looking to put up a bigger tournament. So everyone on this board ... consider yourself invited.
It will be on Saturday August 18 in Riverside CA. We have people coming in from outside of CA. as well. More specifics will be coming out soon, such as the name of the Comic shop and time (around 1-ish).  Only released product will be used, no proxies, marvels, homemade cards etc.
Just like to know who wants to throw down!?

Great to hear about a California OP Tourney. If I'm not busy that weekend I just might be able to check it out, considering that I work near Riverside.  :)

Me and one other will be there, possibly more. I'm gonna try to get Aaron S to come, he actually mentioned to me that Jon Land had been playing recently (didn't know you had a big Hemet crew playing though). Who all is there? Chuck? Chance?

Finally a tournament that doesen't have house rules, proxies, marvels involved.... too bad i cant take the trip from the Bay Area down there to play with you guys. Sounds real old school. Im jealous we dont have a playerbase that large in Northern California. Good luck, and enjoy.

Sounds good, any entry fee or prizes to announce or is it just a casual tournament?

Nate, you should come by. Onslaught, yeah, cool you can make it. Chuck is coming in from Seattle and Jon will be there also. Chance is in New Orleans he won't make it. No prizes per se, but I may bring some stuff.

It will be really weird to see Mr. Freeze and "West Coast Empire" people again, I was 14 the last time I played against those guys.

Yeah if only he could contribute to the boards as much as you do, you always have great things to say about Overpower. Oh wait, you generally just post about other posters since you probably don't know anything about the game. Cool!

I'll take pics for sure, assuming people don't find it obnoxious.

I'm getting excited, this event is going to have a lot of top players, I'd have to imagine the competitive juices will be flowing even if everyone is a little rusty.

I'm pretty sure a group of fun-loving OP players won't find it too obnoxious to pose for a few pics. ;)

Have a great time, West Coasters.... I hope you guys are able to get some regular events going.

To those about to venture, we salute you!

It's okay you still act like you're 14, Peter Pan.  8)

I know plenty about the game, but you seem to know little about life.  Grow up Peter.

No proxies?  :( Anyone have any spare Devourer of Worlds or A-Next they'd like to lend me? ;) I have lots of cards, just missing certain ones to make a tournament-worthy deck.

That's why we decided to have a proxy-friendly environment in our meetup/tournaments. It's more about the skill of the player than the size of their wallets. Even though skilled players can make do without the uber rare cards; we just want to get people to our event.

While I've never made it to a meet-up, I have to agree with this philosophy. The game has been gone for over a decade now. It's just too hard to get some of the cards, so why wouldn't you let people use proxies?

Most reasonable people would agree.

Yeah, well, I may have mis-spoke, "Proxies" will be Ok. Just don't want people slappin' some glued card over one, so that they can tell where that card is in their decks. Not that it matters too much, it's all just for fun anyways.
Hoping to get enough people to do this regularly. When the Marvels get printed they can be added to the tournaments.
By the way, those cards were never play tested, so to me they seemed a litte off balance.
