In the middle of the Southern California desert the show down began. 11 men enter only one remained on top.
11 players, 5 swiss rounds, 3 semi-finals, 1 victor.
We had an odd number (onslaught, you better show up next time, not to mention the other 4 guys I thought would come out for sure). Guess we may need that carrot to dangle after all. So, back on track. The odd number had us doing some re-working in the final stages of the swiss rounds to end up with the final 8.(I came in second by the way. Note to self ... never venture 5 for the loss in the final game. (but hey, no guts no glory). If I would have pulled it off, it would be something to tell the Grandkids... hehehe.
It was a great time, great venue and great people. Jake showed up with about 3000 cards there for the taking. This was not crap, totally rare and useable cards. (Think Starjammers Professor X, try and find that card, let alone for free!). That's just the tip of the iceberg. Jake you're the man!
Some of us admitted to having our decks from 14 years ago and just dusted them off to throw down. The ultimate winner came from over an hour away, he and his twin brother read about it on the forums last minute, and eventually one brother was the winner. Wonder-Twin powers activate!
We have tentatively set up another tournament for December. But I'm sure we'll get a few more in before that. Sure brought back a lot of memories ... and it was a blast!
Till next time .............
sounds like a good time was had by all!
FREE CARDS!!!

great stuff! can we get some names to go with the faces? (screen names will do)
is that one deck i see: dark phoenix/spider-man/thing/hawkeye? looks like an interesting one
Looks like you guys had an awesome time. Congrats to Judgeone for an excellent tournament turnout.
Looking at the pictures, I'm seeing:
Wolverine, Thing, Hulk, ??
Juggernaut, Superpatriot, Heroes for Hire, Thing
Jean Grey: Dark Phoenix, Spider-Man, Thing, Hawkeye
Captain America, Hand, Wolverine, Hawkeye
Onslaught, Donald Pierce?, Holocaust, X-Man
And great venue, I wish we had a place to play that allowed food and drink.
Hey guys! Yup, I joined in on the fun. We had an awesome time. Two of my friends joined me as well and it was their first time playing against others. They were initially unsure about playing but since they saw how easy going and casual the whole thing was they jumped into the tournament. :)
I'll add a bit more info on what happened. Not sure if Judgeone will go into more details. All but two (the twins) used Any Hero Decks. We didn't stay around for the final victory match but it does seem like one of the Battlesite decks won.
Some of the other decks being played were:
Sentinels, Beast: The Brute, Heroes for Hire, Thing (My deck as usual) ;)
Captain America, Superpatriot, Nick Fury, Hawkeye (My friend)
Dark Phoenix, Scarlet Witch, Invisible Woman: Malice, Spider-Woman (My other friend)
Rhino, Venom, Spider-Man: Symbiote Costume, Spider-Woman
Scarlet Witch, Spawn, Invisible Woman: Malice, Spider-Woman
That last Spawn team I listed was an awesome match I played against. I KOed the team, but Scarlet Witch cursed me with -5 venture and she ended up winning on venture and completed her final missions. :o Hate when that happens! LOL
Also I couldn't believe I was able to score a free Phoenix - Manifest Phoenix and Sunfire - Atomic Flame OPD special. Thanks so much guys! We can't wait to do it again. :)
WOW...manifest phoenix AND atomic flame!...those are 2 of the half dozen or so cards i still need
so jealous ;)
way ta go nate
an xcellent 2 hit ko combo
Sorry I couldn't make it, life stuff got in the way unfortunately. Looks like a great turnout though, props to Alex and Eugene Ho for showing up and winning the whole thing! I don't think they even touched a card in the last ten years, so they will be even more formidable when the rust shakes off.
Seems like a good store, planning on using it again for the next meetup?
Wish I could have gone but I read about it to late to adjust my plans (I play in softball tournaments on saturdays). I will definitely try and make it to the next one in SoCal. My brother & son (2nd generation OP player LOL) will also play.
So, here are some tourney details, as I remember. Anyone else have anything to add, feel free.
Players – Myself (Judgeone) 5-2, Dan (Nate Grey) 3-3, Jon,(kn3elb4z0d) 4-2, Rod 1-5, Ron 1-4, Chuck 2-3, Joshua 2-2, Jake1-3 (Ugen), Ken 1-3, Alex 6-0 & Eugene 5-2 aka the wonder twins. I could be wrong on some of these records, however.
Some guys bailed after the 4 rounds as it was pushing 7pm by then, and they had a poker game to attend (hope you guys won some cash)!

Don't have Eugene's deck list for some odd reason, but a battlesite was used.
It was a blast!
I'm surprised there weren't more Energy based decks.

He was the one with Holocaust, Donald Pierce, Onslaught, X-Man (R) with Hell's Kitchen Battlesite if I recall correctly. The winning Battlesite deck had Four Freedoms Plaza then. :)

I'm on the far right in pics 2 & 4
knnthwht is on the far left of pic 1, second from left in pic 3 and middle right in pic 5 (He also donated the free cards everyone was scooping up, all I did was schlepp them down there)
BTW, we do casual OP play at GMI on the first Sunday of every month, starting at 1:00 PM.

Really? Wow, that is news to me. I'd have been down there had I known. How many OP players you get at these casual OP play Sundays?

Usually 3 or 4. Basically me, my nephew and a friend or two (one of whom,
knnthwht, was at the tourney; the other was a bit too intimidated to play against a lot of new people) Hope to see you there next week!
Here's a link to my album of pics from the tourney on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10151155986526049.481358.675756048&type=3 (http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10151155986526049.481358.675756048&type=3):
Any plans to set up another tournament judgeone? I will force Aaron to come at gunpoint, and should have at least 1-2 other people to bring with me.
i'm guessing judgeone won't be showing up anywhere announced after he ripped a board member off on a big lot
Well that's uncharacteristic, I'm surprised to hear that.
Anyone who attended the last tournament, how many of the people there were not part of Chuck's group? If it's still a sizable amount, maybe I can set something up and have a similar sized turnout.
I would show up to a SoCal tourney! Might be a plus 1 or 2

Of the 11 people there, 3 were from Chuck's group.
