Akira set!

So I made these years ago when I got back into playing, and meant to post them here but never got around to it. A whole set based on my favorite anime from the 80s, Akira! I made Kaneda, Tetsuo, the Colonel, and the Espers (the three kids).

I'll post Kaneda for now and get to the rest later (some still need visual tweaks). In the anime he's pretty much a thorn in Tetsuo's side, but manages to do some damage only through his bike skills and the laser cannon he picks up, so I designed him around that. The most straightforward approach seemed to be to build the bike and laser into his character to give him power, but I decided I could do some cool and unique things by making the bike and cannon cards instead.

The idea was to make him pathetic until you get the bike and cannon out and start getting away with his specials, at which point he's extremely annoying. In that respect, I gave him mechanics that seem a bit overpowered conceptually (within this game at least), balanced by the fact that you HAVE to have the bike and cannon for the other specials to work. He's the kind of character you'd target down immediately, and that's exactly what happened during my one and only play test, so I never got to see if the cards were actually balanced :P (note: I tried to made the Espers a defensive-from-reserve type of character to keep Kaneda alive).

The goal is pretty much to get these out at the same time. With this, 6E has the power of 8 for attack and defense. I added the little recycle mechanic to keep him from becoming useless after negates. So, basically, if you keep him alive after getting the cannon out, fun times for your opponent! At least blow up his bike up for good :p

So you need the cannon for these but...psst...remember that bike card? Yeah, if the bike is out as well, these two become a real problem...at least I'd assume they would. I've always had a hard time landing cards like this, and it seems like most good decks never bother with these types of cards at all as far as I can tell, so I tried to make them "too good" with the bike out. A 4 that hits like an 8, and a multi card hit that is 7 to block. Make sure you blow that bike up...

I thought I told you to blow that bike up...seeing a trend here? So if the bike gets out, you can make them waste a negate on it with Let's Ride. And then we have Chicken. IIRC, special 8s are either no-power or are OPD - this is neither, so to balance that I made it so that by defending with a power card instead of a negate or avoid makes the bike go boom, and therefore any dups of this can be rendered useless.

So that's Kaneda. On paper he rapes negates...you pretty much HAVE to negate the bike immediately, or you're in for it. With only the cannon out, he's just a mediocre 6E character with crap specials, the kind you wouldn't even want in your deck, but at least the cannon recycle mechanic keeps him an annoying draw of attention.

Not much to really say about Tetsuo, he's pretty basic. Very cheap 8 though, as it turns out.

React is a variation on BS specials, which are normally OPD + remainder of battle + equal value. Might be too good, but whatever, wanted to give him something cool.

There's definitely room for an OPD of some sort, maybe something based around when he goes full retard in the anime, KO himself to do something crazy, like remove all placed cards currently on the table. I can almost guarantee I meant to do something like that but couldn't think of a good one. Suggestions?

I've never seen the show, so I can't speak to the appropriate nature of the cards, but these two look pretty cool.

I must say, Kaneda looks like a lot of fun once you manage to get that Cannon and Bike into play. Kinda makes me think he should also have a DS... but, at least there's the Battlesite route :)

aesthetically speaking, the cards look  8)

I was thinking a DS would be good for Kaneda.  I also like the card for tetsuo that makes players each discard a card.  I think that's a disadvantage, but apply a different ability to it, and you might get around your opponent being able to defend.  Imagine playing a card such as:

Each player chooses a frontline character.  That character may not attack for remainder of battle.

Not a OPD, and since it doesn't target a character, it can't be avoided, only negated.  That could be a good new special card trick in a deck.

I think I'll post this in the Evils thread.

Yup, a DS would definitely be what you want for Kaneda. It's something I would have added, probably to another character in the set though, since I like the idea of synergizing him with someone else rather than giving him everything he needs.

Gonna get the other two characters up in a bit.
