There's actually a very good reason why those are separate characters and not variants. Dark Beast and X-Man escaped the AoA, the others did not. So, there have been comics where X-man & Cable are together (fighting eachother or others) and there have been comics where Dark Beast & Beast are together (again, fighting eachother or others). There have not been any comics with Colossus & Colossus:AoA together.

Also, X-World is an alternate reality that, manifestly, warranted it's own variant cards. So it seems to me, that a set of AoA variants would be like the X-World variants, in its justification and execution.

The fact that only Dark Beast and X-Man escaped from AoA is circumstantial. There is nothing to prevent any other AoA character to escape in future stories or even retcons.

Those who are following the Dark Angel saga should know that Wolverine and Wolverine AoA finally met each other.

I can understand the variant thing for hero cards like Storm 3-stat, Storm 4-stat, and Storm Neutralized, as they are all the same character in the same universe. When it comes to Characters who are from diffrent unverses' (Weapon X, The Brute) or actual clones of other charcters (Scarlet Spider), I think they should all be treated as diffrent characters.

Seems to have become a variant/clone thread......thoughts to ponder

I don't have a strong opinion on the AOA part, but it was my impression that the X-World variants were put out to promo the comic books (merchandizing), but then again, i could be wrong.

My biggest beef was with Human Torch and Human Torch: Invaders.  Wasn't the Invaders version a robot?  Different people should not be considered the same (like Cap A & Superpatriot).
Would that mean that Nova (from New Warriors) couldn't be on the same team as Nova (Frankie Raye: Herald of Galactus)?  I'm sure there are plenty of other examples.

@ Bios, possible retconns and re-writes go on forever. The point is, at the time the set was released, only X-Man and D.Beast had escaped AoA. My personal opinion is that they started getting a little crazy with AoA2 and the Exiles, and all the "leaks" out of AoA. I love the original story arc and wish they would've left it as-is.

Having said that, if/when alternate universe characters finally are able to meet their "standard" counterpart, then I'd say there are grounds to consider a house rule to treat them as clones.

@Justa - I always agreed on the Human Torch (Invaders) thing because yes, he was a robot. And he killed Hitler.  8)

I actually just created the last card for a Spiderman expansion I spent months on yesterday. (that last card being Jack O'Lantern who functions as a split variant of Hobgoblin-Mysterio).

Some of the more fun things to come out of that set included an Outlaws hero card, Aspects for the Daily Bugle and a Web of Life Hombase (based on the Morlun-Grim Hunt-Fever mystic aspects to the Spiderman mythos).

My playing group created a Home-made ASPECT for DAILY BUGLE as well. We made it mirror the ASTEROID "M" and MUIR ISLAND ASPECT cards, only for Strength (instead of Fighting and Intellect, respectively). At first, we were concerned it'd be too much, since that base has a 7s, 7s, 6s, 6s - but all in all, it really just made it a worthwhile base.

Gotta include the love for X-Men: AOA! My favorite X-Men story of all! So glad we do have X-Man in Overpower and I'm also in agreement that Blink would have been great to have as well.

I actually started collecting comics when the Marvel 2099 line first came out so I would have liked to see more 2099 OP cards.

I think a Spider-Man set would have been outstanding. I know Marvel tends to live and die with Spidey when it comes to a lot of things, but I think a lot of characters, like Sleepwalker or even lesser known guys like SuperPro could have been fun additions to OP.

I would have also like to have seen a crossover set. Not necessarily in the same view as the Marvel/Wildstorm but maybe teamworks, power cards, etc that had characters from different sets together - would have brought the game together IMO.

I would have loved more smaller, themed sets. An Avengers set. A Spider-man set. An X-men set that actually contains decent X-men (really, Taskmaster and Spider-girl but no Angel, Blink, Pyro, Toad, Avalanche, Mastermold, Nimrod...).

If they had kept them small, around MC size, I think those could have been lots of fun.

I can come up with plenty for DC too. JSA, Titans, The Legion, Planetary, Authority, Stormwatch...

Thats a pretty sweet concept. Especially staying around the MC size. That would make things easier to collect and definitely a lot more accessible - of course the money isnt in the small sets though  :P
