Promo items, uncut sheets etc

Forgive me for starting yet another thread but I was looking for card art images and came across some other images I thought some of you might find interesting.

I think these date back to the first Regional tournaments. I may be wrong but I think the top 8 were awarded these rather cool uncut sheets from the original starter decks. Both Cherie and I made the final 8 and so we ended up with two of them. Cherie went on to win the whole thing of course and I got knocked out in the first elimination round. In my defense though I was playing with a Galactus deck because we didn't have enough level 8 strength power cards to make two strength decks!

I thought these mini-uncut sheets were cool and actually prefer them to the full size uncut sheets that were often used as tournament prizes later on.

Post any other images you have of cool promo items or uncut sheets here. I'll dig out what I can.

Keep posting. A million posts. Never stop, for any reason! I'm a little bit obsessed with any kind of uncut sheets (they are a lot rarer in some other games that didn't give them out as easily as Overpower did), so looking at these is great. I've seen tons of different OP uncut stuff, but oddly enough never the original set. I think it's unique that they collated the starter decks next to each other on the same sheet, since that isn't always the case. Do you remember what the Onslaught uncut sheets were given out for? I still can't believe that one ended for 30 bucks on e-bay a few years ago...

I'm gonna go figure out how to clamp my Monumental sheet down without damaging it so I can take a picture of it. It has the miscoded Tessa on it, which I thought was cool when I won it. Overpower prizes were always fun, because now that I think about it I also got some Wolverine comics to go with the sheet.

Well that was easier than I thought.

Here is the full sized pic of the entire sheet.

Is anybody aware of the Uncut Sheets of the "Lost" Classic Inserts?  I know for a fact that 2 such sheets "Did" exist.

Jack

I have an uncut sheet of JLA Missions, pretty useless. I'm not even sure where it is anymore.

Bios had an uncut sheet of the Classic Inserts.

I agree. Totally useless. But still pretty cool...

Here's an Image press sheet - the sort of thing sent to comic retailers to announce new products.

Press sheets were cool because they had to be produced before the product and so changes were sometimes made before the cards were released. Here's one from Mission Control. I can't find a larger image but I did find a zoom in on that Brood hero card.

Onslaught

I don't think that Brood art ever showed up on another card, did it? Meaning there could be a fair amount of art that was commissioned for OP, and then just never used for one reason or another. Since Mephisto (and some team called "The Jury") were supposed to be in Mission Control, maybe there is a Mephisto hero card and set of specials rotting away in a filing cabinet somewhere...

Jack

I just bought an Image sell sheet, but it's a different one:

Mostly to get a logo crop for my art collection.

Onslaught

That one must be a lot older, since it has stock art instead of using images directly from the cards. Oh, and the Fleer/Skybox logo. Cool find.

Very cool. I've never seen that one. Plus it says Ass. heh

I'm not sure I've ever seen a scan of the Tournament guide online. These were produced towards the end of OverPower's run and so I don't think they got that well distributed. They contain some general tournament advice plus the full guide to specials by code. There is some black and white art inside

OverPower card sized but with square corners. The image shows both the back and the front. Didn't seem that hard to find at comic conventions back in the day but good luck trying to find one now.

The Powersurge promo poster. This image was rescued from GDMJR's site. I should dig out my 'posters' and take some pictures. I have this one and some from the original set (Spiderman-Wolverine, Storm-Thing, Gambit-Venom). Were there any promo posters made after Powersurge?

Onslaught

That Powersurge poster is so cool, it's a pity that you can't find one these days for less than 40 bucks. There was one more poster for JLA, and it had the art for the 6 Anypower on it. I had forgotten it even existed until thinking about it just now, so it must be pretty rare since it never pops up on e-bay.

Oh yeah, and the shot of the cards with speech bubbles is neat since they used it in a lot of magazine ads. I have an Archie comic somewhere advertising the game with Gambit proudly shouting "DISCARD!" as if it was a very exciting game mechanic.

I've never seen that. Does anyone have an image of it? These 'posters' were just letter sized pages folded twice so were not that big. They were probably mailed to every comic book store and 99% of them probably either gave them away or put them in 25c bins. These days they'd sell them on e-bay I expect.

Onslaught

Maybe there is some story behind that art, because the poster (same size as Powersurge) was in our local store window a really long time before JLA came out. Between that and the 6 anypower not being obtainable in packs, perhaps the art was commissioned separately from the JLA stuff at some point with the intention that it would be distributed as a promo card in a magazine.

Anyway, here is a panel I've been trying to find for a few days that fits the theme of the thread. While physically fighting the Fantastic Four, Onslaught (presenting himself as a kid) was mentally trying to win over Franklin Richards by bribing him with Overpower cards.

Jack

I'd LOVE to have a full scan of that tournament guide. I think that the specials guide would be something that would answer most card code questions.

We have the OP with the speech bubbles, got it back when I was only 7 or 8 at a Blockbuster in '95 or '96. I'm guessing that we had absolutely no idea what OverPower was back then since my first packs were IQ. The one that we have is pretty damaged. :(

I should have bid on those PowerSurge posters back when they were a common occurrence on eBay, hopefully one will pop up that's cheap.

If I ever get a working scanner again I'll do that but the specials guide was no different to the versions that are on the Web. It's just that not everyone had a laptop back then so having a paper copy was more convenient. Actually I do have a spare copy so if YOU want to scan it in and make it available to everyone it's yours. Send me a message or an e-mail with your mailing address.

And is that a Dark Claw card Franklin has?

I found a bunch of homemade images so I'll start posting those over on the Custom Card section.
